Time is running out to use Payless ShoeSource gift cards and make any final returns.
The Topeka, Kansas-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Monday and said in a statement that it would ask a federal judge for permission to honor gift cards until March 11.
Pending court approval, March 1 is the last day for returns and exchanges of merchandise purchased before the liquidation sales began Sunday, the company said in the release. Store coupons and rewards have been discontinued effective immediately.
Melissa Jacoby, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said bankruptcy judges typically grant requests to honor gift cards. But she and other experts advise not waiting to use gift cards.
“I generally tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday,” she said.
