Sarepta’s hearings. Or how to get a drug approved on emotional grounds. Source: Boston Globe.

In the world of biotech, amazing things sometimes happen. This article is about one such amazing thing: Sarepta’s (NASDAQ:SRPT) twin sister drug, company and stock.

The twin sister, of course, is AveXis (NASDAQ:AVXS). Consider the following:

Both had drugs tested on very small trials. Both drugs were set against similar diseases (Spinal Muscular Atrophy for AVXS, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy for SRPT, both leading to muscular function loss on account of genetic defects). Both diseases had many possible levels of severity. Both diseases affected children and had high emotional appeal. Both trials didn’t have a proper blind and randomized control group. This, combined with the levels of severity, opened up a large window for recruiting less severe cases and then claiming their outperformance of historical norms (for the disease) as representing the drug working. And, indeed, both trials had the same principal investigator, Jerry Mendell.

Given all these coincidences, what is this article about? Well, it’s about another interesting consequence:

The way to determine where a puck is going to be requires evaluating its direction and speed. I used a similar approach to identify five stocks with fast-growing dividends: Boeing (NYSE:BA), Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN), CVS Health (NYSE:CVS), Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN), and AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV). Here’s why these stocks could be great picks for dividend-seeking investors.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Keith Speights]

I wrote three months ago that I viewed Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY) stock as a pretty good pick — but with a couple of qualifications. First, I didn’t think that the biotech would generate returns in 2018 nearly as great as it did last year. Second, I thought that there were even better stocks to buy than Alnylam.

The delay in an FDA decision for Tegsedi puts it behind competitor Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ALNY), which expects to hear from the FDA by Aug. 11 for its hATTR drug patisiran. But Sarah Boyce, the president at Akcea Therapeutics, doesn’t think a few months will really matter: “We don’t really feel that’s going to have any impact and the drugs will be close enough together from a launch perspective. So not really [going] to make any adjustments, and we’re very well prepared to be ready to launch following approval.”

What should investors do with shares of Celgene (CELG) , Biogen Idec (BIIB) , Gilead Science (GILD) and Regeneron (REGN) ? Biotech heavyweight Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB) has now lost over 13% of its value so far this year. To be fair, this year hasn’t been kind to biotechs in general, thanks to President Trump’s aggressive trade policies with China. But Biogen’s value has been declining at a far faster rate than the industry as a whole due to stiffer competition in the all-important multiple sclerosis (MS) space.
