ING has received a lot of analyst attention recently, most of which seems to have been positive. What’s going on and what should investors do about it?
You might well think, “nothing at all!” Why would you buy a bank – of all sectors – in a politically fractious, institutionally half-built currency zone?
The answer breaks down into three parts. Risk, growth and opportunity.
Risk: It would take a lot for investors to have to provide capital to ING
Start with the dividend yield: this should be over 6% through the medium term. This yield does of course reflects a risk premium for Europe. However, I would stress that I don’t think it reflects perceived risk in the stock. There are a number of reasons for this:
GDP growth in the Netherlands is forecast by the ECB at 1.7-2% for 2016-17. Bear in mind that this level is similar to where many observers see US trend growth for now. ING also operates in Germany (1.6% ECB forecast for both years) Belgium (1.2%, 1.6%) and Poland (3.7%,3.6%). So the overall “Eurozone risk” – much of which is political – needs to be distinguished from the central growth scenario of the ECB, which gives ING a supportive, if not entirely scintillating, macro backdrop. Events such as Brexit might dampen the growth but a recession seems unlikely.
