Warren Buffett made $12 billion in 2016 and reclaimed his position as the second richest person in the world.
How did he do it?
There are three primary reasons behind his investment performance, which helped increase his net worth to $74 billion.
1. The Election
Although Buffett supported Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, and even provided free trolley rides for voters to travel to the precincts, it was Donald Trump’s victory that help propel a broad stock market rally, including Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, which jumped 11.5% since election day on November 8. In total, Buffett earned about 65% of his 2016 gains since the election ($7.8 billion). Of that total, about 46%, or $3.6 billion, occurred in the two days after the election when Berkshire shares increased 6%.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Stocks To Own Right Now: ConAgra Foods, Inc.(CAG)
Advisors’ Opinion:
- [By Laurie Kulikowski]
The debt-to-equity ratio is very high at 2.34 and currently higher than the industry average, implying increased risk associated with the management of debt levels within the company. Along with this, the company manages to maintain a quick ratio of 0.25, which clearly demonstrates the inability to cover short-term cash needs.
- [By Laurie Kulikowski]
Despite its growing revenue, the company underperformed as compared with the industry average of 2.3%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 1.1%. Growth in the company’s revenue appears to have helped boost the earnings per share.
- [By Laurie Kulikowski]
Looking at where the stock is today compared to one year ago, we find that it is not only higher, but it has also clearly outperformed the rise in the S&P 500 over the same period. Although other factors naturally played a role, the company’s strong earnings growth was key. Looking ahead, our view is that this company’s fundamentals will not have much impact in either direction, allowing the stock to generally move up or down based on the push and pull of the broad market.
