From the rise of quantitative trading driven by data to new financial technologies and start-ups, the Wall Street landscape is shifting. The faces of change on Wall Street can be found on this year’s 30 Under 30 Finance list.
The rising stars of Wall Street are building quant apps for clients at Goldman Sachs, making investments based on sustainability themes at Morgan Stanley, and creating data-driven trading models at BlackRock. They are partners at big hedge fund firms like Tiger Global Management and Pershing Square Capital Management, and work for hedge fund legends like billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller.
Young entrepreneurs are shaking-up the financial services sector. Matthew Humphrey, 29, is a serial entrepreneur who has already sold a business for $100 million at age 24. He is currently the CEO and founder of LendingHome, which has raised more than $100 million in venture capital funds and lent out nearly $1 billion. Humphrey’s company, which has 240 employees, uses proprietary risk scores to extend credit to non-traditional borrowers who have already repaid $400 million of principal with virtually no realized losses. Humphrey matriculated to Carnegie Mellon to study computer science at the age of 13.

My favorite at the moment is QCR Holdings Inc. (NasdaqGM:QCRH).
Founded in 1993 and headquartered in Moline, IL, the bank has a strong regional lending base in Illinois and Iowa that should grow in line with the broader national economy. I particularly like the fact that the bank considers itself relationship-driven at a time when trust is in short supply.

Market Exchanges like the CME Group (Nasdaq: CME) have just started allowing trading in bitcoin futures and could attract an entirely new type of retail user as well as allowing institutional clients access to the bitcoin theme. Exchanges make their money on transactional volume, so a bursting of the bitcoin bubble wouldn’t necessarily mean weakness for shares.
