Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Own For 2019

The Tax Cut and Jobs Act changed the U.S. tax code in major ways, and 2018 is the first year these changes will go into effect. All taxpayers can expect to see major differences on this year’s tax return from what they’re used to.

Those changes will have a big impact on folks filing their tax returns in 2019, but two changes in the tax law are especially likely to affect retirees.

1. The standard deduction rose nearly 100%

One of the biggest and most notable changes for 2018 taxes is the standard deduction being nearly doubled. The standard deduction for single filers in 2018 is $12,000, up from $6,350. For married folks filing jointly, the standard deduction is $24,000, up from $12,700.

Deductions are amounts taxpayers are allowed to subtract from their taxable income, which reduces the total tax owed, and can even shift the taxpayer into a lower tax bracket so they pay a smaller percentage of their income in tax. Taxable income is measured by AGI (adjusted gross income), which is the total of all your taxable income from all your income sources, including wages, bonuses, and dividends, minus allowed adjustments, such as qualified individual retirement accounts and alimony.

Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Own For 2019: ConocoPhillips(COP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

Three years ago, if you asked me to compare the prospects of an integrated oil major like BP (NYSE:BP) to an independent oil and gas exploration and production company (E&P) like ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), I’d have told you the oil major would win hands down. The price of oil had collapsed, and independent drillers were stuck up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

  • [By Chris Lange]

The number of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) shares short fell to 21.01 million from the previous level of 24.44 million. Shares were trading at $69.15, within a 52-week range of $42.27 to $70.15.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

As oil prices rose through the first nine months of last year, it caused several of Marathon’s peers to boost their capital spending plans. ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP), for example, increased its budget twice, going from an initial level of $5.5 billion up to $6.1 billion by year-end. Meanwhile, Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC) set its budget range between $4.2 billion and $4.6 billion but ended up spending $4.8 billion. Marathon, on the other hand, had resisted the temptation to boost spending, keeping a tight lid on its budget at $2.3 billion.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) has worked hard to distinguish itself from other oil companies over the past few years by shifting its focus from growing production to increasing shareholder value. That led it on a path to shed high-cost assets so that it could slim down to a company that could thrive at lower oil prices.

  • [By Rich Smith]

And yet, a funny thing has been happening in the market for oil stocks over this past week. All of a sudden, Wall Street analysts are talking up free cash flow as a reason to buy oil stocks. In fact, they can’t seem to shut up about it. Over just the past few days, I’ve seen free cash flow mentioned prominently in the analyses of Wall Street bankers on no fewer than three separate oil stocks: ExxonMobil, Chevron (NYSE:CVX), and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP).

Courier Capital LLC cut its stake in ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) by 3.9% in the fourth quarter, according to the company in its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The firm owned 4,910 shares of the energy producer’s stock after selling 198 shares during the period. Courier Capital LLC’s holdings in ConocoPhillips were worth $306,000 as of its most recent SEC filing.
