Olaparib is finally approved in Japan as maintenance

Company: AstraZeneca (AZN) and Merck (MRK)

Therapy: Olaparib

Disease: Platinum-sensitive, relapsed ovarian cancer

News: AZN and MRK announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare has approved olaparib (branded Lynparza) as maintenance therapy for relapsed, platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer. Like the recent American approval, this does not require BRCA-mutant disease, as studies like NOVA and SOLO-2 showed striking benefit in this setting, including in women with no sign of DNA repair defects.

Looking forward: The slow roll of olaparib continues, now to Japan. You know me; I think these iterative approvals are important events for the continued sales growth of any drug, and AZN is rapidly building an important case as the best PARP inhibitor available. Olaparib is also in consideration in Japan for breast cancer, for which it has already been approved in America.
