Top 10 Medical Stocks To Own Right Now: Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc(VRX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (NYSE: VRX) dropped about 6% Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $8.92 after closing Monday at $9.48. The stock’s 52-week high is $38.50. Volume of around 20 million shares was about 12 times the daily average of around 1.7 million. The company had no specific news Tuesday.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (NYSE: VRX) dropped about 2% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $9.44 after closing Thursday at $9.63. The stock’s 52-week high is $38.50. Volume of nearly 15 million shares was about 25% below the daily average of around 19.5 million. The stock is on track to post a gain of around 0.5% for the day following an offer from Fresenius SE to acquire Akorn. Barron’s suggests that investors must believe there’s a buyer for anything, so why not Valeant?

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We noted earlier that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) has popped today after selling assets for more than $2 billion, beginning what many expect to be just the first round of such sales. BMO’s Gary Nachman notes that Valeant had received “a solid price” for its assets. He explains:

The first transaction is the sale of Dendreon (Provenge) to Sanpower Group for $820mn in cash. Provenge is a treatment for prostate cancer and is not core to Valeant; thus, we are not surprised by this asset sale. We estimate Provenge sales of $306mn for 2016, which translates to a multiple of ~2.7x.Valeant has been struggling to accelerate Provenge since it acquired the product, and given that the company does not have a real oncology presence we think this deal makes a lot of sense.

The second transaction is the sale of CeraVe, AcneFree and AMBI to L’Oreal for $1.3bn in cash. These products are OTC skincare brands that we believe are core to Valeant’s dermatology/OTC business; thus, this deal is more surprising to us. However, with annual combined sales for the three products of $168mn, that translates to a multiple of ~7.7x. We think that is a good price and demonstrates Valeant’s willingness to part with some core assets if the valuation makes sense. We view that as a smart business decision given the urgency forValeant to pay down its significant $30bn debt level more aggressively…

There is still more to go with asset sales, but we view this as a good start for Valeant.

Shares of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International have gained 5.5% to $16.19 at 2:02 p.m. today. That’s a solid gain, but less thanthe 12% rise in pre-open trading, and the 8.8% rise at 10:27 a.m.
