Top 10 China Stocks To Watch For 2019

It’s impossible to read the headlines or view a financial news channel without hearing about the debt crisis.

We hear that the U.S. is facing a debt crisis because budget deficits are out of control. We hear that China is facing a debt crisis because of wasted infrastructure investment, bank Ponzi schemes and bad loans to money-losing state-sponsored enterprises.

Next we hear that emerging markets are facing a separate debt crisis because of dollar-denominated debt that cannot be repaid if higher U.S. interest rates lead to a stronger dollar.

In short, the whole world seems to be facing a debt crisis in various forms. But just how bad is it overall?

Total global debt now exceeds $233 trillion. Another way to express that figure is about a quarter quadrillion dollars (a quadrillion is 1,000 trillion). The global debt-to-GDP ratio is about 318%, a dangerously high level, especially if interest rates start to rise.

This debt is in addition to approximately $750 trillion of bank derivatives as reported by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

NetEase Inc (NYSE: NTES) is the largest online services provider in China with revenue from its e-commerce platform and online gaming. Sales on its e-commerce platform surged 157% last year to support slower growth in gaming which accounts for about 75% of total revenue. The company is also starting to monetize its gaming segment with movies and mini-series based on the characters in the games.

The stock market gave up ground on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling triple digits and other major market benchmarks following suit with declines of close to 0.5%. Investors seemed inclined to take their foot off the gas after the strong start to the year, as fears about possible deterioration in economic strength and the geopolitical climate weighed on sentiment. Bad news from some high-profile companies also hurt the overall market. Domino’s Pizza (NYSE:DPZ), Carbon Black (NASDAQ:CBLK), and NetEase (NASDAQ:NTES) were among the worst performers. Here’s why they did so poorly.
