Top 10 Biotech Stocks To Own Right Now

Endo International (ENDP) tumbled to the bottom of the S&P 500 today after Donald Trump railed against the high cost of drugs at his press conference today.

Endo International slumped 8.6% to $14.00 today, while the S&P 500 rose 0.3% to 2,275.32. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology (IBB) fell 3% to $277.94, while the SPDR S&P Pharmaceuticals ETF (XPH) dropped 2.9% to $39.41.

Trump’s comments, which also targeted companies who leave the U.S. only to sell most of their drugs here, hit most biotech and pharmaceutical stocks today, but it hit Endo the hardest.

Endo has been one of the specialty pharmaceutical companies that benefited from rising drug prices, and now the pendulum appears to be swinging the other way, something Endo is quite aware of as it moves towards new products. In a note released on Monday, JPMorgan analyst Chris Schott and team offer their takeaway from Endo’s appearance at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare conference:

Investors are beginning to wonder if bluebird bio is at risk of losing market share before it really even begins life as a commercial company. The latest example: In September Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) released promising preliminary data from a small ongoing phase 1 trial, investigating a new immunotherapy as a potential treatment for advanced multiple myeloma. While the initial data release included just five patients, all had failed to respond to between four and six previous treatments. Amgen’s drug, AMG-420, a “simpler” immunotherapy compared to the cellular therapies being developed by bluebird bio and Celgene, resulted in a complete remission in four of them. That’s very impressive.

The recent surge in biotech investment is terrific for the pace of innovation, but that capital isn’t heading toward the industry’s bigger older players, a couple of which are looking mighty underappreciated right now. Perhaps the investment community’s intense focus on start-ups has created interesting opportunities to snap up shares of these two overlooked biotechs at a very nice price.

One of these two drugs is Amgen’s (NASDAQ:AMGN) Repatha, and the other is Praluent, which was co-developed by Sanofi SA (NYSE:SNY) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:REGN). Both drugs launched to billion-dollar blockbuster expectations, but because they’re complex biologics that are expensive to make, they cost about $14,000 per year. Their high cost, plus the fact that they’re injected rather than taken orally, may make them best suited for patients with stubbornly high cholesterol who are at the greatest risk of heart disease.

Top 10 Biotech Stocks To Own Right Now: Biogen Idec Inc(BIIB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Sean Williams, Chuck Saletta, and Brian Feroldi]

As noted, the ability to take numerous swings for the fence makes Ionis special. It’s often a marvel when a mid-cap drugmaker has a half-dozen experimental drugs, let alone one working with 25. Spinal muscular atrophy drug Spinraza, which was licensed to Biogen (NASDAQ:BIIB), is one such drug that’s put Ionis and its antisense technology on the map. Last year, Spinraza netted “just” $882 million in total sales, but delivered $364 million globally in the first quarter of 2018. That extrapolates out to more than $1.4 billion, which means added royalty revenue for Ionis.
