With about a month to go before the two "I-can’t-believe-we’re-going-to-go-through-this-again" deadlines, there’s a 60 percent chance of a federal government shutdown and an only slightly lower chance of a problem with the debt ceiling.

On paper, this Washington edition of a Perils of Pauline-like cliffhanger silent movie shouldn’t be happening.

If this were almost any previous year, the Republican-controlled Congress would be working quietly with the Republican president on short-term extensions of the coming year’s appropriations and the legislation that would enable the federal government to meet its financial obligations. There would be no suspense and the outcome wouldn’t be in doubt.

    On CNBC's Fast Money Halftime Report, Jon Najarian said he noticed unusually high volume in the April 23 calls in Swift Transportation Co (NYSE: SWFT) on Wednesday.
