Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

For years, the conventional wisdom was “pay off your mortgage as fast as you can!” For an entire generation, this mantra resulted in “note-burning parties.”

But prepaying your mortgage, while it can save you money on total interest, may not make sense for you in the long term. Homes aren’t really investments, so handing over extra money to a bank may not make any sense.

Don’t get me wrong. If you can pay your mortgage off by a date certain, possibly when you retire, it isn’t necessarily a bad idea. If it gives you peace of mind — and you can afford to do it — go in that direction.

I was prepaying our mortgage off for years, then other things came into view: We had two daughters we wanted to send to college. We needed to stockpile cash to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses, which really paid off when we had a catastrophic health event.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

After several years of being a Wall Street darling, Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) has fallen out of favor since 2015 as it has been hit by some of the same negative trends that have hurt the department store sector as a whole.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Another top dividend stock income investors would be wise not to ignore is high-end mall-based retailer Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN). Shares of Nordstrom have fallen 24% over the trailing year, meaning they’ve underperformed the benchmark S&P 500 by roughly 40 percentage points.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Nordstrom (JWN) has dropped 2.7% to $43 after getting cut to Hold from Buy at Stifel.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) has declined 1.1% to $85.79 after getting cut to Market Perform from Outperform at KBW.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

L Brands surged 11% to $47.85 today, while the S&P 500 rose 0.2% to2,357.49. And while L Brands was the best performer, retailers made up half of the 10 best performing stocks in the benchmark today: Nordstrom (JWN) advanced 2.9% to $44.71, Gap (GPS) jumped 5.1% to $24.06, Kohl’s (KSS) climbed 5.6% to $39.60, andBed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), which reported earnings last night, gained 3.4% to $39.08.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

By now, we all know retailers are facing a tough time. More and more, people are choosing to shop online, putting sales under pressure and leaving many with too many stores. Some department stores have begun to acknowledge the problems–but will they be able to adjust quickly enough in a rapidly changing landscape? Credit Suisse analyst Christian Bussand team believe this process is “well under way” but that didn’t stop them from downgrading Kohl’s (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), even as they upgraded Nordstrom (JWN) and Burlington Stores(BURL). They explain why:

  • [By Jim Robertson]

Nordstrom’s (JWN) is one name we did well shorting back in May of this year, and although we made another attempt at shorting the stock for a minor loss from September to November, our net gain between the two ended up being about 16%. Not bad all things considered. However, we’re still convinced JWN is a stock that’s going to move substantially lower when it’s all said and done.

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now: Matador Resources Company(MTDR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

Matador has grown its reserves throughout the commodity cycle, as well as its production and cash flow. Haas also likes the company’s history of identifying and acquiring acreage early and cheaply. Much of the analyst’s positive outlook is derived from Matador’s successful monetization of midstream assets and pattern of reinvestment.

The health care sector was in trouble over the past year, coming under fire from congressional hearings and politicians on the campaign trail. stock market guide

NVIDIA(NASDAQ:NVDA), the graphics-chip maker and leader in the burgeoning virtual-reality and driverless-car markets, has been on an absolute tear over the past 12 months, with shares up over 340%. At this point, it’s natural for investors to wonder if it’s too late to buy a few shares — this run could just bethe start of NVIDIA’s path to world domination, or it could be the very top of a bubble-like valuation.

While the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, there are certain types of investors who should, and shouldn’t, invest in NVIDIA no matter what the reality is. So with this fundamental truth in mind, we asked two of The Motley Fool’s best and brightest just who should (and shouldn’t) invest in NVIDIA. Here’s what they had to say.

You firmly believe in the growth story

Chris Neiger: NVIDIA has caught the eye of many tech investors with its stock price run-up in 2016. The investor optimism is more than just speculation, though. NVIDIA is already a dominant force in the GPU market, with more than 70% of the discrete desktop GPU market share, and it shows no signs of ceding its lead to rival AMD. That’s important, because the company brings in about 62% of its total revenue from its gaming GPU segment.

stock market guide: Celanese Corporation(CE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Time To Favor Optionality: Most macro data are similar to, or better than, when the merger was announced. As a result, the same returns have been obtainable, with significantly less stress, simply through owning 3M (MMM) or a basket of chemical companies that approximate the Dow-DuPont portfolio. Relative to the chemical sector, performance has been average, leverage appears reasonable but near-term FCF less-than compelling partly due to new capacity ramping. With the merger likely to close in the near-term (90% chance, in our view), we believe Dow-DuPont will have an opportunity to show how scale creates optionality. The overhaul at Celanese (CE) over the past few years shows the way.

latest news on stock market

It was a choppy, lethargic effort, but the bulls got the job done. The S&P 500‘s close of 2,262.53 was 0.20% stronger than Friday’s close. New record highs still remain elusive after last week’s lull, but those levels are still in sight.

Not every stock mustered a modest gain on Monday though. In fact, some were remarkably deep on the red. Among the worst of the worst were Ambac Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMBC), Deutsche Bank AG (USA) (NYSE:DB) and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS). Here’s what upended each one.

Mosaic Co (MOS)

Brazilian iron company Vale SA (ADR) (NYSE:VALE) is getting out of the fertilizer business, and U.S.-based fertilizer name Mosaic is getting a bit deeper into it, buying the division Vale is shedding. With VALE shares down 5.4% and MOS stock off by 6% though, it’s pretty clear neither shareholder base is thrilled with the deal, or its terms.

Miscellaneous shorts. Lamensdorf is also betting against Japanese printer and camera giant Canon (CAJ) since he believes the company still hasn’t figured out a way to compete with smartphones.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Nikon’s story is similar to what’s plaguing its Japanese rival, Canon (NYSE: CAJ  ) . Canon’s stock has nosedived by 20% year to date, but the stock’s recovered nearly 3% over the past month. Don’t let appearances fool you: The company slashed its full-year sales and profit forecasts back in July, as the worldwide camera market has slumped, and as smartphones continue to take over this aging niche. Canon’s route back to respectability looks like a treacherous climb.

Pension funds are in the news again… and the news isn’t very good. Many plans are underfunded, which means they don’t have enough money to pay the benefits they’ve promised.

Among those many underfunded plans are funds managed by the city of Chicago, which were recently blocked by a court ruling that prevents the fund from reducing benefits. That means the city will need to find other ways to reduce its shortfall.

But Chicago is not alone in its pension problems. Experts estimate pension funds across the country — both government-run plans and corporate plans run by large companies — are underfunded by trillions of dollars. That’s bad news for the plan participants.

It’s safe to assume the experts’ original assumptions for these plans were overly optimistic. And in order to keep the promises these funds made to the hardworking men and women who paid into the plan so many years ago, the plan managers have two choices:

swing trading: Terra Nitrogen Company L.P.(TNH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu
