Markets are cheering a major development in efforts to fix the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China. According to Reuters, Chinese telecom giant ZTE has signed an agreement to get back into business with its American partners. The agreement will lift a ban by the U.S. Commerce Department that prevented China’s No. 2 telecommunications equipment from buying from U.S. suppliers. This is a major development, and one that signals progress among trade officials from both nations. There are now more job openings in the United States than available workers. This is the first time that the Department of Labor has documented this phenomenon. There are 6.7 million openings compared to the 6.4 million workers available to fill those positions. As a result, U.S. companies have been forced to increase compensation in order to attract talent. All of the positive economic development could come to a screeching halt should the U.S. experience the largest labor strike in a decade. Reports indicate that the Teamsters and the United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) are on a collision course that could result in a general strike. The union has announced that 260,000 UPS employees have authorized a strike should both sides fail to reach a labor deal by August 1. UPS is responsible for the transport of 6% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

Unilever NV (ADR) ADR (NYSE: UN) procures sustainable oils such as soy, sunflower and rapeseed oil for a host of its consumer products such as Hellmann's mayonnaise. It remains to be seen how the U.S.-China standoff will hurt its margins.

If you’re an investor in consumer goods giant Unilever (NYSE:UN), odds are you followed the takeover bid from Kraft Heinz(NASDAQ: KHC) closely in 2017. Ultimately, it fell through, with Unilever’s management rebutting that it was better off on its own. There was some mustard left on the face of Kraft Heinz, but major shareholder Warren Buffett claimed there was potentially a misunderstanding of the nature of the offer. It was not intended to be a hostile takeover, he said, but it could have been perceived that way by Unilever.

Another fatal crash involving a Tesla Inc. electric car is under scrutiny following Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s latest lashing-out over media coverage of his electric-car maker.

Police in southern Switzerland are investigating the death of a German man whose Tesla crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames last week, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Bloomberg News reached a representative of the Bellinzona police who said no one is available to provide details on the incident until Wednesday morning.

“We are deeply saddened by this accident, and we are working to establish the facts of the incident and offer our full cooperation to local authorities,” the company said in an emailed statement. “Tesla has not yet received any data from the car and thus does not know the facts of what occurred, although it appeared to be a high-speed collision.”

Musk, 46, sent a series of tweets Monday criticizing journalists for not reporting that Tesla makes what he says is the safest car on the road. He reiterated that the company will begin reporting safety-related data on a quarterly basis, starting after the three months ending in June.

Best Safest Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Panasonic Corporation (PCRFY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By ]

However, Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) announced this week that it was happy to consider further investment in the Nevada facility. A similar move in China is not unlikely. Tesla expects to triple its energy storage business this year but its problem has been getting supply to meet the demand. Panasonic’s announcement is probably connected to a very substantial energy storage contract win just announced by the company.

  • [By ]

CBAK is in a very competitive industry, as well as being small relative to its competitors. Among the Company’s competitors are giants like Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF), but overall it faces competition from Japan, Korea, and China. Although CBAK states that “we are able to leverage our low-cost advantage to compete favorably with our competitors”, it is hard to see that being the reality, especially when looking at the above gross margins. Still, the Company may enjoy lower labor costs, since it sources labor locally and apparently it has “higher consistency and safety in product quality, which enables us to compete favorably with local competitors”. But given the greater resources of at least some of its competitors and the constantly evolving dynamics of the industry, competition is surely a risk factor to consider.

  • [By ]

The production issue for batteries may improve with added input from partner Panasonic (OTCPK:PCRFY). They currently produce battery cells for Tesla in Nevada, and in Japan. At their recent earnings call CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga said they were looking at manufacturing battery cells at a new plant in China in conjunction with Tesla. They also predicted their automation energy business profit would double this year. This can be seen as a vote of confidence in Tesla and a bullish sign for Tesla stock. However, according to reports in the Nikkei Asian Review, there is as yet no definite commitment for a joint venture in China. Panasonic is the world’s largest battery supplier for EV’s.

“My doctors say I’m now cancer-free,” Espenilla, 59, said in a mobile-phone message to reporters from Jerusalem, where he’s on pilgrimage with his wife and friends. The governor said he had surgery soon after finding out about the cancer which he described as “very early stage and quite localized.”

Espenilla said that “for insurance” he also went through radiation therapy, which caused speaking difficulties due to dry throat and mouth sores. These problems will be resolved in time and doctors expect full recovery in a month or so, he said.

Top 5 Safest Stocks To Invest In 2018

Go back a year, and offshore drillers like Noble (NE), Rowan (RDC), Transocean (RIG) and Atwood Oceanics (ATW) had been all but written off–until they weren’t anymore. Since then, investors have been rewarded for picking winners in the group from the losers, as Atwood Oceanics has more than doubled, Transocean has gained 34%, and Rowan has risen 42%, while Noble and Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) have dropped 13%.

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

But are the days of picking stocks among offshore drillers over? Consider: Today, Jefferies analyst Eduardo Royes and team upgraded Noble to Buy and cut Rowan to Hold, clearly favoring one over the other. They explain why:

Given where we sit in the cycle, we cannot favorably recommend the group. That said, we can still see relative value (or lack thereof) in shares. We upgrade Noble to Buy as we view it as the ‘safest’ way to play offshore drilling exposure at the moment we see modest upside to shares on a DCF and relative valuation basis. Meanwhile we downgrade Rowan to Hold as despite still generating healthy free cash flow, we see risk that medium-term earnings disappoint (we’re >30% below ’18 Street EBITDA) as the ‘turn’ in jackups and ultra-deep-water markets is likely challenged from a profitability standpoint. Outside of Rowan and Noble, we skew favorably to Hold-rated Ensco (ESV) and Transocean.

The technology sector has been lagging the broad-based market over the past month. It seems like it may be the beginning of a corrective pullback. I dont expect a significant correction but any weakness will be a good opportunity to buy The Priceline Group (PCLN). The online travel industry is set to benefit from the positive structural changes and so this company would be an excellent play. It is the cheapest stock compared to peers and it has been delivering strong results in the history which shows no sign of slowing.

Weakness in technology sector

Over the past weeks, the technology sector showed the first sign of weakness. Nasdaq index declined from all-time high 6341 to current 6135 which is just a mere 2.9% weakness in a month. On the other hand, the broad S&P 500 index declined just 0.4%.

SunPower signed a 125 MW supply agreement with NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) to provide its P-Series modules to the developer between June and October of this year. There wasn’t any disclosure about whether the deal included the Oasis tracking system or any design services, but even if it’s just a panel supply agreement, it would be a positive sign.

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.
