Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018

The word “growth” is the central word in the phrase Dividend Growth Investing, yet DGI often gets a bad rap as a stodgy method of saving for retirement. I think this misperception arises from the fact that some proponents of the strategy (who may be more focused on income than returns) require a certain minimum yield threshold for their investments. This, in turn, screens many of the higher growth companies from their radar, as higher growth companies generally have lower payout ratios than their slower growth counterparts.

As a result, many of the same old slow-growing blue chips like Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), Proctor & Gamble (NYSE:PG), and General Mills (NYSE:GIS) are widely held and discussed in the “Dividends” section of Seeking Alpha, while other higher growth opportunities are passed over. This is unfortunate, because there are several very high quality companies that are being disqualified simply because of a lower yield.

These lower yield, higher growth companies can be excellent investments for those with an extended time horizon, and even for retirees they can be a nice boost for a portfolio. For all the angst of wanting enough immediate income, a freshly minted retiree should realize that they are also likely looking at a 20 year time frame for their investments. As the ssa.gov life expectancy calculator shows, a male turning 62 years old in 2016 can expect to live an additional 21.6 years.

Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(GMCR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As badly as short sellers want to hate on Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), betting against the multiyear rally in this $12.7 billion beverage stock has been about as wise as eating from a box with a skull and crossbones on it. And as a bull market continues to lift all ships, Green Mountain’s ship is going to keep floating above the others.

Green Mountain owns Keurig, the brand of beverage brewers that use self-contained K-Cups to make coffee, teas, and other drinks. While Keurig’s “fad” status has certainly helped tip the deck against GMCR, the fact remains that the firm has done most of the hard work in getting Keurig machines accepted by consumers. With brewers essentially ubiquitous at this point, the firm is able to make money on its cash cow: the K-Cups.

Keurig’s individual-serving cups have big margins and a big installed base. With huge convenience and the relatively large sunk cost that consumers have put into their Keurig machines, it’s a sticky business with big switching costs. Consumers who buy a Keurig are much less likely to spend the money on a competing brand of proprietary coffee pods.

I’ve said before that GMCR is far from cheap right now. But its momentum trajectory is showing few signs of fizzling out, especially as direct competitors such as Starbucks (SBUX) continue to sell K-Cups of their own. Don’t bet against GMCR in September – buy this Rocket Stock instead.

So Im going to stick my next out and share my views on four battleground stocks that are among my favorite shorts: World Acceptance (WRLD), Green Mountain (GMCR), Herbalife (HLF), and InterOil (IOC). And next week at the Value Investing Congress I will present another short, my largest.

But for short sellers in Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (Nasdaq: GMCR), there's another outcome: They've been badly burned as shares have surged, but they insist they've been right all along, and it's only a matter of time before the stock crashes and burns.

Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018: Pound/Rand(PX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The last twelve months haven’t been kind to Praxair (PX) and Air Products & Chemicals (APD), but UBS analyst John Roberts and team argue that’s about to change, as they upgrade their shares to Buy from Neutral arguing that their earnings can withstand a slowing global economy:

In our view, the two stocks are more alike than different. NTM P/Es are within ~0.5 pts of each other. Both stocks have declined ~20% from their historical highs the largest corrections in 20+ years aside from the financial crisis…

Industrial gas stocks have normally grown through changes in FX, oil & China demand within normal historical ranges. And investor concerns around China forAir Products & Chemicals may still prove much bigger than reality. Nevertheless, the combination of FX & oil sector impacts on Praxair, and FX & China issues for Air Products & Chemicals, have been much larger than previously seen. With oil already down, the dollar already appreciated, & China concerns already heightened we believe forward basis would appear to carry only normal risks (& lower if FX & oil are mean-reverting, which some theories support).

Normal high single digit EPS growth projected for both in 2017 vs 2016: Four large firms serve 70%+ of the global merchant gas market, and price normally contributes ~2% to growth. Customer older captive units being outsourced contributes another 2%. Secular drivers for oxygen include energy savings (i.e. O2 burns more efficiently than air), life sciences (healthcare & microbial processes) nitrogen secular drivers include increasing purity requirements (food freezing & semiconductors). Topline growth ~2x global GDP more normal, with EPS growth ~2x sales growth due to high fixed costs (key variable costs are inexpensive air & power).

Financial crisis demand drop was only a few %, in line with global GDP drop Most chemicals volumes dropped 10%+ (some 40%

Hot Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2018: Xerium Technologies Inc.(XRM)

Advisors’ Opinion:

     52-week high: $18.93

    52-week low: $11.01

    Annual revenues: $492.9 million

Xerium Technologies (XRM), a manufacturer of products used in papermaking, is a favorite of micro-cap expert Dan Abramowitz, who heads Hillson Financial Management, in Rockville, Md. Abramowitz calls the company “a turnaround story that is now at an inflection point.” Changes that a new management team put into effect in 2012 should start bearing fruit. The stock’s price-earnings ratio is a mere 7, based on the average of analysts’ earnings estimates for 2016.

The US government balance sheet features $80 trillion to $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities. This amount stems from future entitlement program burdens that are, in effect, government promises.

No one is going to vote to reduce their entitlements. (Well, other than the very well-off, who dont actually need those entitlements.)

Unfunded pension liabilities at the state and local have swollen to roughly $4$6 trillion in the United States. And that may be understating the severity of the problem.

Kentucky Is an Example of How Severe This Problem Is

Its easy to cite Illinois or New Jersey, but lets look at a state like Kentucky.

The State of Kentucky released a remarkably candid self-appraisal of their pension liability issues earlier this year. If you optimistically (and unrealistically) assume between 6.75%7.5% compounded returns for the future, Kentucky still ends up $33 billion underfunded.

Top 10 Stocks For 2018: Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Maxfield]

Stocks are up across the board since the presidential election, boosting the value of Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) stock portfolio, but few stocks have rallied as much as Bank of America (NYSE:BAC).

  • [By Matthew Argersinger]

My take: With none other than Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-B) also investing in airlines and singing their praises as of late, Gerstner stuck the landing with his United pitch. There’s a definite case to be made that industry conditions have changed for the better, much like they did for the railroads starting more than a decade ago. United may not be the best of the bunch, but you’d do well to take a very close look at the industry. If Gerstner is right, there are multi-bagger opportunities looking down at you from up above.

  • [By Matthew Frankel]

Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B), in addition to its dozens of businesses, also owns a portfolio of 47 different common stocks, many of which were hand-selected by Buffett himself. And, many of these stocks pay dividends. In fact, from all of the stocks in Berkshire’s portfolio, the company is generating more than $6,700 in dividend income every minute.

While it’s technically not a pure insurance stock, that’s exactly why I suggest Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) for investors who want a piece of the insurance business.

Bernstein’s Ali Dibadj considers Kraft Heinz’s offer for Unilver:

The initial offer, which was rejected, provided an +18% premium to Unilever’s share price, while deals across the space typically go for roughly ~30%. While we have always speculated that Kraft-Heinz might go after Unilever’s Food business, today marks an interesting development as it has chosen to pursue the entire business, which is roughly ~60% HPC and ~40% Food. Key categories include laundry detergent, deodorant, and shampoo in HPC and ice cream, sauces/spreads, and tea in Food. Unilever’s business also has broad global exposure. Some have suggested that KHC may spin off Unilever’s HPC business. However, we believe this is unlikely to happen initially, as it makes up the majority of the business (~60% sales and EBIT) and has a more attractive growth profile compared to Food.

Kraft Heinz’s market capitalization rose to $117.7 billion today from $106.2 billion yesterday. It reported net income of $4.2 billion on sales of $26.5 billion in 2016.

how to day trade

Good morning and happy holidays! I hope you got your fill of Santa Claus yesterday because the official start of the “Santa Claus rally” on Wall Street is falling flat so far.

Friday marked the official start of the rally, and the major market indices all finished relatively ho-hum.

The situation is similar after the open this morning, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average flat, S&P 500 off 0.07% and Nasdaq-100 down 0.54%.

What’s more, options volume on Friday was among the lowest totals of the year. Only about 13.3 million calls and 10.6 million puts changed hands on the session. The CBOE single-session equity put/call volume ratio rose to 0.64 and the 10-day moving average ticked higher to 0.57.

Taking a closer look at Friday’s options activity, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) were smacked lower after cryptocurrency prices plunged as much as 30% on the session. Meanwhile, Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX) call options were once again popular after the merger deadline with AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) was pushed back to June.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Staples gained 9.8% to $9.51 today, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.1% to 2,360.16.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.

how to day trade: Hertz Global Holdings Inc(HTZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market continued to climb sharply on Wednesday, sending major market benchmarks to record highs yet again and propelling the Dow Jones Industrials up more than 100 points. Economic data continued to support the notion that the U.S. economy remains strong, and rising inflation levels led many to conclude that the Federal Reserve is more likely than ever to follow through on its promise to keep lifting short-term interest rates in 2017. Rising bond yields reflected investors’ reluctance to hold onto fixed-income investments in anticipation of higher rates, prompting some to shift assets into the stock market. Several companies also reported, andFortress Investment Group (NYSE:FIG), Editas Medicine (NASDAQ:EDIT), and Hertz Global Holdings (NYSE:HTZ) were among the top performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Top 10 Heal Care Stocks To Own For 2018

By Scott Tzu with Parke Shall

When a company is in a distressed situation, a lot of times it’s not going to come out and tell the public that it is looking at a reorganization or considering filing bankruptcy. As investors, we are often left to draw our own conclusions based on piecemeal that we can obtain regarding the company in question. We believe the signs and signals continue to indicate to us that Concordia Healthcare (NASDAQ:CXRX) is not a stock to be in, has limited turnaround prospects, and could very well be heading for restructuring.

By now, most readers will find themselves familiar with the CXRX story, but for those who are not, we will give you a small briefing. Concordia is one of many pharmaceutical companies that tried to expand by rolling up other corporations once the cost of debt became very cheap. It used a hybrid style pricing model, where it raised the price of several key drugs after acquiring them in order to bet it all on the company’s future cash flows instead of the mounting pile of debt that the company was accruing. When presenting earnings each quarter, CXRX used similar non-GAAP accounting treatments to give the impression that acquisition costs and one time costs would not be a factor. Now, like Valeant (NYSE:VRX), as questions start to rise about the company’s product line, all eyes turn to the balance sheet, which is in severe distress.

Western Digitalnow expects Dec-Q revenue of $4.75Bn, gross margin of 36%, tax rate of 13%, and EPS between $2.10-$2.15; versus ~$4.71Bn, 36%, 14-16%, and $1.85-$1.95, respectively. We believe that the Dec-Q guidance update is mostly attributed to the resolution of IP disputes with Samsung and better-than-expected execution by Western Digital; meaning, we do not expect much read-through benefit forSeagate Technology (STX) or HP Inc (HP) (both Equal Weight-rated stocks)…

Helmerich & Payne, Inc.(NYSE:HP) has an impressive dividend record, particularly when you take into consideration that it operates in the highly cyclical oil and gas services industry. The problem for investors, though, is that a dividend decision a few years ago obscures the income story here. This is one stock where the trend isn’t what it seems, and a little more analysis is needed to understand Helmerich & Payne’s true dividend potential.

The energy sector is feeling the pinch of low oil and natural gas prices, which has been a headwind for oil field services industry stalwart Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (NYSE:HP) and dragged down investor sentiment for midstream sector players Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE:EPD) and Buckeye Partners, L.P. (NYSE:BPL). But each of these companies has a long history of increasing dividends annually, which means that the bad news today is likely to be good news for dividend lovers looking for big yields.

Marathon Oildropped 8.7% to $14.87, while the S&P 500 fell 0.2% to 2,362.98, as Front Month Nymex Crude futures for April delivery slid 5.4% to $50.28., leading some to wonder if the price oil could drop below $50 a barrel.

It wasn’t just Marathon that got clipped as the eight worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500 came from the energy sector, including Murphy Oil (MUR), which fell 6.7% to $25.87, Devon Energy (DVN), which slid 6.5% to $40.72, and Chesapeake Energy (CHK), which stumbled 6.1% to $4.94. The oil rout began after the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. oil inventories rose by 8.2 million barrels to reach $518.4 million, a record level.

That’s why its worth pointing out that just yesterday, small cap cannabinoid prodrug pharmaceutical stock Vitality Biopharma, Inc. Investors who were looking to learn a little more about up-and-coming drug development company Vitality Biopharma Inc (OTCMKTS:VBIO) may want to mark December 8th on their calendar…. if they’re going to be in the Los Angeles area that day anyway. The company will be making a presentation that day, at the annual LD Micro Main Event. Interested and approved investors can attend the VBIO presentation by registering beforehand with LD Micro.

Vitality Biopharma has found a way to make cannabinoid-based pharmaceuticals without the usual downside of cannabinoids. Namely, Vitality Biopharma’s version of cannabinoids are non-psychotropic, meaning larger, more effective dosing is possible without the ‘high’. It’s this little detail that takes cannabinoid medicine — already the most compelling frontier in the world of pharma — to the next level. There’s a reason some people think the cannabinoid market could be worth $20 billion by 2020.

The idea was significantly advanced in early November. In eight of the nine states voters were asked about legalization of marijuana (for one reason or another), voters said yes….. four for recreational use, and four for medical use. In eight of those nine states, the measures passed. Marijuana is legal in more than half the United States now, and we’re en route to a decided majority in the foreseeable future.

VBIO didn’t necessarily need a sweeping victory at the ballot box, but each time marijuana wins, it seems to advance the discussion of the power of cannabinoids as medicine.

Investors will be able to learn more about Vitality Biopharma’s work in that arena on Thursday of this week. On that day — 8 AM PST / 11 AM EST — at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Robert Brooke, CEO of Vitality Biopharma, will be making a presentation as well as meeting with current and prospective investors.

Vitality Biopharma, Inc. But it is important to understand how the industry is evolving in the United States and Canada and what that might mean when realizing valuation and the evolution of government policies which still vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, making access to Cannabis and the pricing model still a big question moving forward.

Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig blamed the confidence-sapping U.S. election and the plunge in the value of the British pound for the companys disappointing third quarter earnings, and predicted that the appliance-makers woes would be short-lived.

Whirlpool shares fell as much as 13% on Tuesday after the company posted earnings per share of $3.66, versus expectations for $3.86, according to FactSet. The company lowered its full-year core EPS guidance to $14-$14.25 from $14.25-$14.75.

In a market like this, a perceived miss means youre gonna have a reaction, he said in an interview with Barrons after earnings were released. Its usually temporary. I suspect this will be as well. At this level were hugely undervalued.

The companys costs in the U.K. jumped because of the weakness of the currency there since Brexit, which made appliances they imported from other countries more expensive (about 85% of the appliances they sell in U.K. are imported). When Whirlpool adjusted by raising prices in Britain, customers initially balked, Fettig said. The currency drop and demand weakness caused earnings to fall by $40 million sapping about 40 cents per share from profits, he said.

Sanchez Energy’s stock has continued to run higher in 2017 and is up nearly 50% since the start of the year. Fueling that surge is the announcement that the company found an exceptional place to put its liquidity to work. In mid-January, the company unveiled a strategic partnership with a private equity giant, Blackstone Group (NYSE:BX), to acquire Anadarko Petroleum’s (NYSE:APC) Eagle Ford shale assets for $2.3 billion. Under the terms of the deal, Sanchez and Blackstone entered a 50-50 partnership to own the Anadarko assets, which consist of 155,000 net acres that currently produce 67,000 BOE/D and hold more than 4,000 drilling locations that are economic at current prices. Top Undervalued Stocks To Buy For 2018: Abeona Therapeutics Inc.(ABEO)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Robertson]

On Thursday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small cap rare disease stock Abeona Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ: ABEO):

Abeona Therapeutics is clearly a timing trade – we think today’s something of a blowoff top, marked by a volume surge and the fact that the stock’s already peeling back from its peak; the profit-takers are already going to work. We saw a similar surge on Tuesday, and though that one didn’t end up kick-starting a pullback, it helped set up today’s reversal bar (by virtue of luring in the last of the would-be buyers). There’s just not a lot of room left for more upside.
