Thursday June 22: Five things the markets are talking about

Global stocks remain on the back foot, pressured by crude oil tumbling into a ‘bear' market on concern a global supply glut will persist.

The weakness in crude and other commodities is denting the Fed's argument that weak inflation rates will be transitory, despite the domestic economy showing any signs of distress. Fixed income dealers are facing a ‘bull' flattening U.S treasury yield curve.

The yen is heading for its longest winning streak in nine-weeks, while gold continues to climb from its one-month low.

In the U.K, investors are watching the divorce proceedings with the E.U. PM May heads to Europe for her first summit since the recent election and will outline her approach towards E.U nationals before publishing a detailed plan next Monday.

Dollar General (DG) marked its 27th consecutive year of same-store sales growth in fiscal 2016. It followed this milestone up with a beat on both the top and bottom lines during its first quarter of 2017, with comps once again growing – but by only about 0.7%. As I was sifting through the retail carnage, Dollar General was one of the companies that stood out as above average, so I decided to take a closer look with this article.

The business

The company’s primary niche seems to come from its low cost operating structure. The majority of its stores are rural, with roughly 70% of them located in towns of 20,000 people or less. It constantly seeks ways to reduce (or at least control) costs that won’t affect the shopping experience for its customers, many of whom are primarily in a lower income bracket. This is exhibited by its low prices, where 80% of its stock-keeping units are set at $5 or less.

On Wednesday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested going long on small cap sofware stockGlobalSCAPE, Inc (NYSEMKT: GSB):

As for Globalscape, this one’s a little more straightforward, and obvious. GSB shares pushed up and off of their 200-day moving average line last week, and are making higher highs this week. What you can’t see on the chart is how this has been a pretty reliable pattern for Globalscape for years now. The upper edge of the rising trading range is nearing $6.00, though it would take some time to get there.

Best Low Price Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) is rated as a Hold with a new price target of $24. The EPS estimate has been cut from $0.60 to $0.47 for 2017, and the 2018 estimate has been increased from $0.70 to $1.19. Shares closed at $22.36 on Friday in a 52-week range of $19.77 to $25.74. The consensus 12-month price target is $28.72.

The S&P 500 has been in one of the strongest bull markets in history since 2009. Yet surprisingly, in the past decade, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) has actually outperformed the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) by more than 15 percentage points (even including the SPYs dividends). The GLD is up nearly 120% since 2006.

That didnt come in a straight line, of course. That covers a major run-up all the way through 2011, the declines of the next five years and golds rebound in 2016.

best securities to invest in: Honeywell International Inc.(HON)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL INC as a Buy with a ratings score of A+. This is based on the convergence of positive investment measures, which should help this stock outperform the majority of stocks that we rate. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its growth in earnings per share, increase in net income, good cash flow from operations, solid stock price performance and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows low profit margins.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Net operating cash flow has increased to $1,666.00 million or 35.11% when compared to the same quarter last year. The firm also exceeded the industry average cash flow growth rate of 21.56%.

The current debt-to-equity ratio, 0.60, is low and is below the industry average, implying that there has been successful management of debt levels. Although the company had a strong debt-to-equity ratio, its quick ratio of 0.89 is somewhat weak and could be cause for future problems.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

Who are the likely candidates for the next round of upgrades? Cramer said he’s betting that 3M (MMM) will be in the mix, along with Walmart (WMT) and especially Home Depot (HD) , which should have a strong spring planting season with good comparisons to last year. Investors might also see upgrades on Honeywell (HON) and Nike (NKE) , Cramer suggested.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

After a year of stock price fluctuations, the net result is that HON’s price has not changed very much. Although its weak earnings growth may have played a role in this flat result, don’t lose sight of the fact that the performance of the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, was essentially similar. Turning our attention to the future direction of the stock, it goes without saying that even the best stocks can fall in an overall down market. However, in any other environment, this stock still has good upside potential despite the fact that it has already risen in the past year.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The exuberance seen in some stocks is of concern. Caterpillar (CAT) recently warned that earnings expectations are too high. When the stock stopped trading we expected a decline of 3 to 5%, yet the stock actually opened higher. This has probably happened in the past but we cannot readily recall a stock reacting positively to its own downgrade. Honeywell International (HON) also suggested investor expectations are excessive, but again – with little apparent damage to its price.

The New York Times is running its first television ad in seven years during the Oscars Sunday night. The subject? The truth.

The ad begins with voices saying, “The truth is our nation is more divided than ever,” with those words spelled out against a white backdrop. The phrase then changes to “The truth is alternative facts are lies.” The ad repeats different versions of the “The truth is…” as the voices speed up and get louder. It ends with: “The truth is hard” and “The truth is more important now than ever.”

The ad’s mission is to tap into “national dialogue going on right now about facts and the truth” and what that means in today’s world, according to New York Times branding exec David Rubin.

“The idea is to be a part of that discussion about what does it mean to find the truth,” he said. “What does that mean in a world of ‘fake news’? And what is the role of journalism and journalists in that process and what is the role of reader in supporting that journalism?”

Amazon’s real growth strategy will continue to drive upside in AMZN stock for years to come.

Amazon’s(NSDQ:AMZN)growth inside and outside the United States has been relentless in the last ten years, and their double-digit growth has continued even after the company crossed over into the 100-billion-dollar annual sales territory. As the top line gets bigger and bigger, sustaining near 20% growth rate is difficult, but Amazon has managed to keep that growth rate mostly intact despite increasing competition in the e-commerce space.

The problem for Amazon is that the company is not creating a new market: it is actually taking market share from existing players. Its a well-known secret that Amazons basket of retail products is not the cheapest, but customers still keep flocking to the e-tailer in droves as it offers unparalleled convenience. financial trading: FORM Holdings (FH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Briar]

Looking for a quick, money-making trading idea? Put FORM Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:FH) on your watchlist, if not yet in your portfolio. FH shares are knocking on the door of a breakout move, and one more nudge could do the trick.

There are a couple of factors in play here. One of the is the converging wedge pattern that’s developed after the October-December finally stabilized. The upper boundary of that wedge at $2.40 has been tested several times since late last year, but FORM Holdings could never get past the hurdle. At the same time, several key moving average lines seem to be acting as support — even if unevenly — keeping FH positioned well for a breakout effort.

financial trading: Kelly Services Inc.(KELYA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

One such outfit is Kelly Services (KELYA). The Troy, Mich., company places temporary employees in a variety of fields, such as law, health care, computing and finance. Although recent job reports have been strong, S&P Capital IQ analyst Michael Jaffe sees employers remaining cautious in their hiring practices and using the kind of temporary workers Kelly specializes in. Jaffe says Kelly is his top pick in the staffing sector, and he rates the stock a strong buy.
