While crude prices stumbled into 2016, they found their footing by mid-year and roared back to life, ending the year up about 42%. Those rising prices lifted most oil stocks. However, a handful of large-cap oil stocks rose above the crowd by outperforming crude’s rally. Those top-tier performers wereContinental Resources (NYSE:CLR), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD), and Cimarex Energy (NYSE:XEC):

The failure of Russia and others to fulfill their obligations are coming at a time when U.S. shale production is starting to ramp back up. Shale producers such as Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE:PXD) and Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) have already released growth-focused budgets to capture the benefits of an improving oil market. In Pioneer Natural Resources’ case, it expects to spend $2.8 billion this year to operate 18 drilling rigs in the Permian Basin and restart its drilling program in the Eagle Ford. Those rigs should enable the company to drill enough wells to grow its production by 15% to 18% over last year’s average. Meanwhile, Devon Energy expects to spend between $2 billion to $2.3 billion on drilling this year, which should fuel 13% to 17% oil production growth by the fourth quarter versus last year’s final quarter.

    Company Commentary
Kroger Co (NYSE: KR) may be best positioned to counter Amazon’s threat given its own data analytics capabilities. SYSCO Corporation (NYSE: SYY) and US Foods Holding Corp (NYSE: USFD) are likely safe as Amazon won’t move into the foodservice distribution space which is very different from serving individual customers.

We generally favor companies that have already initiated specific self-help, have low-cost assets and are less exposed to China supply and demand dynamics. In Steels, we have increased our rating from Hold to Buy on Nucor (NUE) and from Sell to Hold on US Steel. Jimmy Buffett sure knows how to make the most of a catchy tune and a party vibe. Somehow the 70-year-old singer-songwriter has turned wasting away again in Margaritaville into an aspirational goal. True, nibblin on sponge cake, watchin the sun bake does sound pretty nice (especially on a cold gray day in March). That laid-back sensibility is what attracts visitors to his sprawling collection of Margaritaville restaurants, casinos, hotels and resorts around the globe. And now theres another option for folks who cant get enough of the Margaritaville state of mind he peddles. Buffett has announced that hes opening a string of Margaritaville retirement communities in 2017. Which got us thinking: Which other songs could be spun into successful themed retirement communities? Quite a few, it turns out.

Despite continued FX-driven weakness, the international operations registered solid top and bottom line growth, as the company’s fashion brands continue to resonate and take market share. We believe that with strong international results remaining in force into 1Q, PVH is once again positioned to drive solid upside to guidance. Further, we believe the company has continued to take share in the domestic markets. We view PVH as one of the best positioned plays in our universe and reiterate our Buy rating on PVH.

The latest implied forward rate forecast from Kamakura Corporation shows projected 10-year U.S. Treasury yields differing -0.07% to 0.03% from last week while fixed rate mortgage yields varied by -0.01% to 0.08%. Mortgage yields, determined by the Monday through Wednesday weekly survey of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, lag Treasury movements simply because of the 3-day yield calculation used in the Primary Mortgage Market Survey. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is projected to rise from 2.92% at Thursday’s close (down 0.06% from last week) to 3.374% (down 0.06% from last week) in one year. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield in ten years is forecast to reach 4.639%, 1 basis point lower than last week. The 15-year fixed rate mortgage rate is forecast to rise from the effective yield of 3.69% on Thursday (down 0.001% from last week) to 4.222% (down 0.006% from last week) in one year and 6.29% in 10 years, up 0.038% from last week. We explain the background for these calculations in the rest of this note, along with some mortgage servicing rights metrics. The forecast allows investors in exchange traded U.S. Treasury funds (TLT) (TBT), total return bond funds (BOND), municipal bonds (NUV) and exchange traded mortgage funds (REM) to assess likely total returns over the next 120 months. Ready To Shop? A highlight this coming week is Black Friday, and recent data hint that shoppers might be ready. A record 195.9 million consumers now have access to revolving credit such as bank-issued and private label credit cards, TransUnion (NYSE: TRU) said in a recent press release. This is the highest level of revolving credit access since TRU began measuring the variable and is greater than the 192.6 million consumers who had access to such credit products in Q3 2016. “The third quarter of 2017 exhibited a lending market that continued to operate in a stable manner, with consumers continuing to gain access to credit and take advantage of that access,” said Ezra Becker, senior vice president and head of research and consulting for TransUnion, in the press release. “However, we are beginning to see a slowdown in originations, which may be a signal of saturation in the lower-risk credit tiers and some pull-back in lender risk appetite in the higher-risk tiers.” Still, Becker predicted a “robust holiday shopping season.”

Our favorite pick in the gold mining space is attempting to recreate history.

Back in March, Money Morning Executive Editor Bill Patalon told readers about a unique gold mining company that is miles ahead of its competitors: Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG)

You should without a doubt not only own gold, but also own some gold miners. I believe Goldcorp is the best mining company to own right now, he said. Its past shows that it has the ability to innovate and come out stronger on the other side.

You see, in March 2000, the company launched the Goldcorp Challenge. Goldcorp put up $575,000 and essentially said Tell us where to drill.

The response was incredible.

14,000 people from all walks of life showed up from over 50 countries around the world. Physicists, students, military officers, engineers, geologists – anybody you can think of

Pundits touted the challenge as a disaster, predicting that it would expose the company to a hostile takeover but the joke was on them. Goldcorp ended up with geological and target data that it had never had access to before.

NEW YORK — Walgreen is moving 120,000 employees to a private health insurance exchange from coverage provided directly from carriers, the company will announce Wednesday.
The pharmacy chain will join 17 other large employers on the Aon Hewitt Corporate Health Exchange as part of a growing movement to offer employees fixed dollar amounts to purchase their own plans on such exchanges.
The end-cost to employees depends on the plan chosen, but they typically get more options than under traditional arrangements. Private exchanges mimic the coverage mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment in the public exchanges starts Oct. 1.
“What happens to employer contributions over time? Will they put in as much as they put in the past? These are unanswered questions but potential negatives,” says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute. The benefit to Walgreen and other employers is unknown at this point, as their cost-savings aren’t clear.
Of the 180,000 Walgreen (WAG) employees eligible for health care insurance, 120,000 opted for coverage for themselves and 40,000 family members. Another 60,000 employees, many of them working part-time, weren’t eligible for health insurance.
Aon Hewitt (AON) says other participants in its program include retailer Sears Holding (SHLD) and Darden Restaurants (DRI). These new additions raise enrollment to 330,000 from 100,000 last year, and Aon Hewitt estimates enrollment will jump to 600,000 next year, a fivefold increase from 2012.
By 2017, nearly 20 percent of employees nationwide could get their health insurance through a private exchange, according to Accenture Research (ACN). A recent report by the National Business Group on Health said that 30 percent of large employers are considering moving active employees to exchanges by 2015.

Other major providers of private exchanges include Mercer, a division of Marsh & Mc

Wednesday was a strong day for the stock market, as the Dow finished up nearly 100 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted gains as well. Investors remained generally upbeat about the prospects for the U.S. economy in 2017, and a rise in crude oil prices helped lift the energy sector higher during the market session. Yet comments during a press conference from President-elect Donald Trump weighed on the healthcare sector, and some individual stocks took particularly hard hits. Among the worst performers were Perrigo (NYSE:PRGO), Novadaq Technologies (NASDAQ:NVDQ), and Ethan Allen Interiors (NYSE:ETH). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

In August 2016, BlackBerry Ltd. (NYSE:BB) filed suit against Avaya Inc. (OTCQX:AVYA) for patent infringement. BlackBerry stated that Avaya was infringing on eight BlackBerry held patents in multiple products.

In January 2017, Avaya filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, putting a halt to the lawsuit. However, the alleged products were still being sold by the company.

In February 2017, BlackBerry requested that the court lift the stay on the patent suit and the shield of Avaya’s bankruptcy has been cracked in April 2017, granting BB’s application.

On December 15th, few days ago, Avaya emerged from Chapter 11 after completing its debt restructuring, and it is now publicly quoted on OTCMKTS with a market cap of around $8B.

What will it imply for BlackBerry’s lawsuit? Apparently not much: it will keep its ordinary court path, which was allowed to continue in April 2017, after a New York bankruptcy court cracked the protection shield of Avaya’s Chapter 11.

Evercore ISI’s James West sees a “margin explosion” coming for Halliburton during the second half of the year, while comparing the oil-services giant to LeBron:

With the start of the year already regarded as a transition period, we view the companys decision to sacrifice near term margins in order to accelerate long-term profitability and revenue growth as a defensive, yet calculated, and preemptive maneuver. Execution does remain a risk but naysayers seem to utter similar indecencies about LeBron James each year as the playoffs arrive. You dont doubt the king, and HAL is the clear market leader when it comes to NAM completions, in our view. The change in HALs reporting format makes syncing HALs commentary with its financials more difficult, but NAM comprised 68% and 61% of C&P revenues in 2014 and 2015, respectively (71% and 21% of EBIT). As such, the broader segment should be a good proxy for the region. Abatement of cost inflation, or at least a deceleration as we progress beyond the first step-change in activity of the cycle should serve as an additional tailwind for margins. The most likely benefit will come from proppant costs as sand mines resume processing finer mesh grades following the winter hiatus. Additional frac capacity is being reactivated at leading edge prices, evidenced by the fact that incremental margins improved throughout the first quarter, and the company continues to repair legacy contracts and commitments. Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.
