Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now

Cannabis stocks are making a comeback, no thanks to US-based medical marijuana companies. The United States Marijuana Index, a collection of 17 firms, is still languishing at 55% below its 2015 highs. The Canadian Marijuana Index, on the other hand, representing another 18 firms, is up over 300% since July and is knocking on the door of all-time highs.

Politics and regulatory regimes may be responsible for much of the disparity. The Trump Administration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions in particular, is a vocal opponent of cannabis, and the regulatory environment for the industry is much friendlier in Canada generally. Another meaningful regulatory turn in the US could take a long time, considering Trump still has at least three years to go in office.

In Canada, the industry is already taking off. Though the sector there is near all-time highs, most companies are still small to mid-caps whose business models and growing capacity are only now just starting to take hold.

Hill: Let’s go back to Qdoba for a second. We talked about this right before we started taping. A little bit of background here — Jack in the Box bought Qdoba, which is basically their version of Chipotle (NYSE:CMG). They bought it in 2003 for $45 million dollars. They sold it at the end of last year for just over $300 million. Just, on the surface, you can look at that and say, “Well, they made a heck of a nice profit off of that.” But, there were a bunch of years where, when Jack in the Box reported their quarterly earnings, it was Qdoba that was really doing the heavy lifting. It was Qdoba that was putting up the really impressive double-digit same-store sales growth.

Leading recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturer Thor Industries, Inc. (NYSE:THO) reported a drop in revenue, as well as deterioration in several key financial metrics, in its fiscal fourth-quarter 2018 earnings report issued Thursday before the markets opened. The unexpectedly tepid performance jarred Thor shares, which traded down nearly 15% early in the trading session following the earnings release. Let’s review headline numbers below and uncover why shareholders found the report distasteful:

They currently have a C$5.75 price target on the stock, down from their prior price target of C$10.00. Winnebago’s total backlog increased by 36% against the comparable prior year quarter, to $193.1 million. Competitor Thor Industries’ (NYSE:THO) quarterly earnings, reported earlier this month, revealed a backlog reduction of 18%. Although Thor’s management presented a credible argument that the organization’s backlog reduction is due to increased production capability, its shareholders nonetheless have worried over demand trends. Winnebago’s own backlog growth provides a more positive data point for those taking stock of the larger RV industry.

In addition, Goldcorp’s (NYSE: GG) Éléonore mine in the heart of the territory along with the Troilus mine (which produced over 2 million ounces of gold from 1997-2010 and is estimated to have another remaining 2 million ounces of reserves) are helping to maintain the interest of junior exploration companies in nearby properties. Top 10 Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

But the story isn’t over. TC Pipelines’s units remain down nearly 40% so far this year — and that’s not just bad for unitholders, it’s also bad for the partnership’s general partner and parent TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP). TC Pipelines is, after all, effectively a funding source for TransCanada.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

The shares of giant diversified Canadian midstream company TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) rose an impressive 19% in January, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. That was a huge turn from last year, when the S&P 500 Index’s late-year swoon helped to push TransCanada’s stock down a painful 26%. For reference, the S&P was down around 6% in 2018 and rose roughly 8% in January.

  • [By Jason Hall]

Priestley: Yeah, absolutely. The last company is also on this natural gas trend, it’s TransCanada (NYSE:TRP), ticker TRP. It’s a Canadian energy infrastructure company. They have assets in the U.S., Canada, obviously, and Mexico. They operate 40,000 miles of natural gas pipeline. A notable project that they operate is the Keystone XL Pipeline and the Keystone Pipeline system. It also has interests in 20 power generation facilities, mostly in Canada. And, they have significant scale as a midstream company. I kind of like these midstream players, because they’re really winners, so to speak, in a lot of respects. A lot of the contracts that they make with the oil refiners or the oil companies themselves are 15-20-year contracts.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

In addition to the Trans Mountain system, two other pipeline projects currently are proposed to move crude oil from Alberta either to the Great Lakes or the Gulf Coast. Enbridge Inc. (NYSE: ENB) is proposing to replace its 50-year old Line 3 system to transport 760,000 barrels a day to Superior, Wisconsin. TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP) has received approval from the Trump administration and would transport 830,000 barrels a day to Nebraska where existing pipelines will take over, sending the crude to U.S. refineries and Gulf Coast terminals.

Top Canadian Stocks For 2019

Canada’s economy decelerated more than expected in the second half of last year, amid signs indebted households have begun slowing down spending.

The economy grew at an annualized pace of 1.7 percent in the fourth quarter, Statistics Canada reported Friday, versus economist expectations for 2 percent growth. Third-quarter gross domestic product growth was also revised down.

After leading the Group of Seven in growth last year, Friday’s numbers show a Canadian economy that has lost momentum, seemingly hampered by longstanding productivity issues and the growing potential of a hangover from the real estate boom. The U.S. economy recorded growth rates of 3.2 percent in the third quarter and 2.5 percent in the last three months of 2017. Canada hasn’t trailed the U.S. in growth to this extent since early 2015.

“While most forecasters expect the pace of growth to be slower in 2018, we still believe that there’s a growing risk of the economy stumbling badly,” said David Madani, senior Canada economist at Capital Economics, in a note to investors.

Moreover, TransCanada Corporation (NYSE: TRP)'s $8 billion Keystone XL pipeline – expected to carry heavy crude from Alberta to refineries in the United States – is yet to get a final investment decision. The midstream company had secured 20 years commitment for 500 thousand barrels per day for the pipeline and received Alberta government's support. However, the Nebraska government sanctioned the Mainline Alternative Route for the controversial project, which is longer than the company's preferred route and has forced it to review the alternative route keeping the final decision on hold.

But the story isn’t over. TC Pipelines’s units remain down nearly 40% so far this year — and that’s not just bad for unitholders, it’s also bad for the partnership’s general partner and parent TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP). Kinder Morgan is one of the largest pipeline companies in North America. Its assets span across the United States and reach into Canada and Mexico. There are only a small number of competitors — like Enterprise Products Partners L.P. (NYSE:EPD) and TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) — that can match the company’s scale. Kinder is in a truly elite group of midstream giants.

Pembina Pipeline Corp. (NYSE:PBA) isn’t a name that most investors are probably familiar with since it’s a Canadian company. Not only that, but it’s much smaller than its more well-known national rivals Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) and TransCanada (NYSE:TRP), which have made their share of headlines in the U.S. due to some controversial pipeline projects.

I like to allocate anywhere between 5-15% of my portfolio to lottery stocks. Usually they are cyclical or have a lot of leverage. And most of the time there is some sort of catalyst that will unlock value on the horizon. I would not advice large positions in any of these stocks. It is also best not to spend large amounts of time analyzing them as they will be small positions and are depending on some factors that are hard to analyze. My analysis will be largely quantitative.

Civeo Corp

Civeo corp (NYSE:CVEO) is a provider of remote housing for the natural resource industry in Canada and Australia. In 2015 the Canadian segment generated 60% of EBITDA and the Australian segment 40%. Civeo has 19 lodges and villages with an aggregate of 23,000 rooms. Some numbers:

Market cap of $210 million Net debt of $340 million maturing in 2019 Tangible book value of $485 million (for what it is really worth) Currently cash flow break even Utilization of assets of 65%

This stock is depending on oil coal and gas, but not necessarily all of them. In 2012 the company generated $350 million of operating income at occupancy of 93%. That is a 0.6x operating income multiple! Which seems a bit low. Especially since Australian coal prices have rallied already, and they can probably survive this for a few years.

Top Canadian Stocks To Own Right Now: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dustin Parrett]

TransCanada Corp. (NYSE: TRP) just achieved a perfect Money Morning stock VQScore, making it a profit powder keg waiting to ignite…

TransCanada is a Canadian oil and gas pipeline company, most famous for its development of the Keystone XL pipeline connecting Canadian oil fields to major hubs in the United States.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Enbridge just bought its stake in the German offshore wind farm projectslast year, initially agreeing to invest about $1.25 billion for a 50% stake. However, with concerns growing about its balance sheet and ability to finance growth projects, the company has chosen to monetize part of this asset. It’s also monetizing its onshore renewable facilities in Canada and two in the U.S. to bring in some much-needed cash. This decision to cash in on a portion of its renewable portfolio follows a similar plan by fellow Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP), which sold its solar assets in Ontario last year. The driving factor in that decision was TransCanada’s desire to improve its financial flexibility so that it could “continue to build on our vision of being North America’s leading energy infrastructure company,” said CEO Russ Girling. What’s clear from these deals is that neither TransCanada nor Enbridge sees renewables playing a key role in building the companies they envision themselves being.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) is a dividend lovers’ dream stock. The Canadian pipeline giant has increased its payout for 18 straight years, including 10.4% for 2018, and it now yields nearly 5%. There’s still plenty more growth coming down the pipeline given its forecast that the company can increase the payout at an 8% to 10% annual rate through at least 2021. That outlook is among the best in its peer group.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now

Though spring only recently arrived, marijuana stocks have been flowering for a good two years. Cannabis research firm ArcView has forecast a compound annual growth rate of 28% for the legal weed industry in North America through 2021, leading to what could amount to almost $25 billion in annual sales if these estimates prove accurate.

Growing from less than $7 billion in annual sales to almost $25 billion between 2016 and 2021 in North America would be one heck of a feat for an industry that’s still illegal in every country except Uruguay. Of course, that could soon change. Canada appears to be on the verge of legalizing adult-use marijuana by this summer, paving the way for recreational cannabis sales to commence by August or September. This should add $5 billion or more in annual sales, assuming approval.

As a result of marijuana’s expansion potential, pot stock valuations — especially of Canadian growers — have gone through the roof. There are a half-dozen marijuana stocks currently boasting a market cap north of $1 billion.

(WFC) , struggling to recover from a series of regulatory penalties over allegedly aggressive sales practices, posted a 5.5% profit increase on a preliminary basis, noting that legal costs might have to be revised higher pending discussions with regulators over as much as $1 billion of new penalties related to auto insurance and mortgage-related violations.

Financial services hasn’t exactly been America’s most popular industry in recent years.

Banks have traditionally obtained 40% of their profits from “fee income,” which are those charges for using out-of-network ATMs, for maintaining too low of a monthly balance, or for any of the other fine-print fees you never knew you triggered until it’s too late. This is aggravating for retail customers. Consumer lenders are among the most-hated companies in our country, with predatory loans largely responsible for burdening subprime borrowers with excessive debt and for spurring the 2008 economic recession. This makes the public leery of lenders and distrustful of the fine print in the contracts. Even the companies who are considered best-in-class have an unflattering reputation. Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC)was once considered one of our nation’s most dependable banks. But their recent sales scandal, which opened millions of unauthorized consumer accounts, may have permanently impaired their reputation. And no one has forgotten howGoldman Sachs'(NYSE:GS)traders boasted about ripping the faces offof their clients just to generate profits. It prompted Rolling Stone magazine to famously refer to Goldman as a “great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.”

After Wells Fargo’s (NYSE:WFC) fake-accounts scandal was revealed in 2016, Buffett said that the bank remained a compelling long-term investment and that he had no plans to sell any of Berkshire’s massive stake. At last year’s meeting, Buffett reiterated that while the bank made a big mistake by incentivizing cross-selling, it still was a great company.

In March, FERC dropped a bombshell on MLP investors by reversing a long-standing policy that had allowed these entities to collect an additional fee to cover income taxes as part of their cost-of-service rates on long-haul pipelines. This rule change weighed heavily on MLPs that were majority-owned by other energy companies, since they used this rate structure to cover the taxes they would pay on the income received from their MLPs. Among the hardest hit were Dominion Energy Midstream Partners — owned by utility Dominion Energy (NYSE:D) — and TC Pipelines, controlled by Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP). Meanwhile, Enbridge Energy Partners and Spectra Energy Partners, which are both sponsored by Canadian pipeline giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB), also sold off on that early-spring news, which subsequently led Enbridge to offer to acquire its MLPs.

TransCanada’s (NYSE:TRP) expansion efforts continued paying dividends during the first quarter as earnings and cash flow kept growing. As a result, the Canadian pipeline giant remains on track to achieve its dividend growth targets. CEO Russ Girling affirmed that view on the quarterly conference call, where he detailed the company’s progress on its strategic plan.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

For years, Canadian pipeline giant TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) has used its master limited partnership (MLP) TC Pipelines (NYSE:TCP) as a source of capital by dropping down assets to that entity in exchange for cash. However, a regulatory policy change earlier in the year hit TC Pipelines hard, which caused the MLP to slash its distribution to investors. These changes have weighed heavily on the MLP’s valuation and access to capital. Because of that, TransCanada no longer believes it can use TC Pipelines as a viable funding option.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Meanwhile, TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) has been working to revive its Keystone XL pipeline. After years of delay, TransCanada could start full construction next year, which would put the line into service by 2021. However, the hotly contested pipeline could face new delays or even another rejection.

President Trump just got the man he tapped to negotiate better trade deals for America.

Trump’s U.S. Trade Representative nominee, Robert Lighthizer, was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday, paving the way for him to renegotiate NAFTA, the free trade deal between the US, Mexico and Canada.

A delay in Lighthizer’s confirmation had held up the NAFTA negotiation process.

Trump is required to trigger a 90-day consultation period before his team can even get to the negotiating table with Mexican and Canadian officials. Both Mexico and Canada have already set their processes in motion. But he and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross were reluctant to start it without Lighthizer.

Although Lighthizer was confirmed in a landslide, notable Senators, such as John McCain, voted against him, citing fears that Lighthizer’s renegotiation of NAFTA will hurt states like Arizona which depend on free trade.

“We fear that you do not have an appreciation for the millions of jobs created by this free trade deal,” McCain and Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska wrote in a letter to Lighthizer.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now: Transcananda Pipelines Ltd.(TRP)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By John Bromels]

It hasn’t helped that, in general, pipeline stocks have been having a rough couple of years. This is partly due to an overall industry slump, but different stocks have been hit for different reasons. For example,Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) took on a huge debt load to acquire Spectra Energy and weathered concerns about its cash flow.TransCanada(NYSE:TRP), on the other hand, was forced to cancel its Energy East and Eastern Mainline pipeline projects, which would have juiced long-term growth.

TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) has almost everything an investor could want in a stock. With a dividend yield of around 4.8%, the Canadian pipeline giant supplies investors with a lucrative income stream. Meanwhile, with 21 billion Canadian dollars ($16 billion) of expansion projects underway, the company has the fuel to grow earnings at a 10% compound annual rate through 2020, which should enable it to increase its dividend8% to 10% per year through 2021. Finally, after selling off 11% this year, shares trade at an attractive value. Add everything up, and TransCanada has the potential to generate market-beating total returns in the coming years, which makes it an excellent stock to consider buying.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

One company with a looming catalyst on the horizon is TransCanada (NYSE:TRP). It will pay its next quarterly dividend in July. To qualify for that payment, investors need to own shares of the Canadian oil and gas pipeline company before the end of June. And while collecting that upcoming dividend is a good reason to consider buying shares this month, it’s far from the only one.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]
