Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Buy For 2019

Investors shrugged their shoulders at the Fed’s slightly more hawkish outlook on future rate hikes this week after positive news from the ECB and great macroeconomic data in the U.S. underscored the strength of the global economy. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq index continues to sit near all-time highs, suggesting tech stocks are once again helping push markets upward. A great first quarter earnings season for the sector was met with lukewarm reactions, but volatility has eased and tech companies are all the rage once again. We are now in a quiet stretch for earnings reports, but investors can still use the Zacks Earnings Calendar to prepare for important dates from companies with abnormal fiscal periods. The calendar includes earnings, dividend announcements, and other important financial releases, making it the perfect one-stop-shop to properly prepare for the market events that will have an impact on your own portfolio.

Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Buy For 2019: S&P GSCI(GD)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Paul Ausick]

General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD) dropped about 2.1% Thursday to post a new 52-week low of $187.32. Shares closed at $191.40 on Wednesday and the stock’s 52-week high is $230.00. Volume was 25% higher than the daily average of around 1.6 million. The defense giant had no specific news.

  • [By Lou Whiteman]

For investors looking to put new money to work in a defense prime today, I’d recommend General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) over either Raytheon or Northrop Grumman. General Dynamics currently trades at a 20% discount to its rivals on a price-to-earnings basis and at a 13% discount on a price-to-sales basis due to continued weakness in its business jet division. There’s more risk to General Dynamics, but there is also more potential upside should it get its aerospace business on track and close that valuation gap.

Shares of engine maker Cummins (NYSE:CMI) rose a heartening 10% in January, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. That was roughly 2 percentage points better than the S&P 500 index, which was only up around 8% in the opening month of 2019. However, that’s not nearly enough to make up for Cummins’ steep 24% price drop in 2018, a year in which the S&P only fell around 6%. Clearly, there’s some backstory here.

Three Stocks to Watch Today: TSLA, AAPL, EL
Shares of Tesla Inc. (Nasdaq: TSLA) plunged 7% after JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) slashed its price target for the automaker. JPM cut its December 2018 price target for TSLA stock from $308 to $195 per share, sighting Musk’s inconsistent statements about company funding. That would be a 36% collapse from Friday’s closing price. The news comes as Elon Musk continues to make a series of questionable Tweets about himself and his company. China is coming down on Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL). According to state media reports, Tim Cook’s company has pulled about 25,000 illegal lottery applications from its application store in China. The news comes as China continues clamp down on illegal apps that sold lottery tickets or provided gambling services. Estee Lauder Co. Inc. (NYSE: EL) shares were off 0.3% after the cosmetics giant reported earnings before the bell. The firm reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.61. That figure topped analysts’ expectations by $0.05. The downturn came due to the firm’s weaker-than-expected quarterly forecast and news that it will incur larger marketing costs for a number of new product initiatives. Look for earnings reports from Fabrinet (NYSE: FN) and Nordson Corp. (Nasdaq: NDSN).

On balance, AMC’s offer still appears to fall significantly short of MoviePass’ as a value proposition (as did an earlier competing offer from Cinemark (NYSE:CNK) last year). So long as MoviePass remains in business, I honestly can’t see many moviegoers taking AMC up on its offer.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Other services are trying different options. Cinemark Holdings (NYSE:CNK) charges $8.99 for one movie a month through its Movie Club service, but also offers 20% concession stand discounts. Sinemia is going with one movie per day for $29.95 per month, though other plans are available at different price points.

  • [By Motley Fool Staff]

Vincent Shen: One of the theater chains that we talked about on this similar show last year is no longer in the running as a public company in terms of the stocks. First, with Cinemark (NYSE:CNK), one of the two large remaining chains, it has an offering called Movie Club. This launched last year. $8.99 per month. What you get is one 2D ticket that rolls over if it’s unused. You can build those rollover tickets if you don’t go that often. Plus, 20% off concessions, and there’s no online fees for when you buy those tickets. Then, you can get up to two additional add-on tickets for $8.99 each.

Top 5 Dividend Stocks To Buy Right Now

There is a laundry list of worries that are starting to jump on the plates of investors, not the least of which was confirmed by the Federal Reserve meeting this week, where it became pretty clear we will have a total of four rate increases in 2018 as opposed to three. Toss in the worries over the trade tariffs, which now look like they will be imposed in early July, and there are plenty of reasons to be
nervous.

Despite the potential for increased volatility, the good news is the economy is hitting on all cylinders, consumer spending is strong, and unemployment is at the lowest levels in years. One good move for investors may be to take profits in volatile momentum tech stocks and move to large cap pharmaceuticals. They have a degree of safety and very attractive valuations.

We screened the Jefferies global pharmaceutical coverage list for US companies and found four that look like solid picks for investors. All are rated Buy, and pay good dividends as well.

Raytheon Co. (RTN) is well positioned to capitalize on missile orders given it has the highest exposure to missile defense and tactical missile sales to the Middle East, Bernstein said. Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) also stands to benefit in this light.

President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum comes at a particularly delicate time for major U.S. defense contractors Boeing (NYSE:BA), Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), and Raytheon (NYSE:RTN), with each company vying for at least one of several multibillion-dollar procurement deals in Germany.

  • [By Lou Whiteman]

Contractors including Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC), General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), and Raytheon (NYSE:RTN) have been richly rewarded over the last two years. The current-year Pentagon budget, at $700 billion, is the largest in history and represented a 15.5%, or $94 billion, jump from the year prior. That’s the largest single-year jump since a 26.6% gain in 2002.

3M Company (NYSE: MMM) traded up 0.8% at $196.10. The stock’s 52-week range is $191.44 to $259.77. Volume was about 15% below the daily average of around 3 million. The company had no specific news Thursday.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Shares of 3M Co (NYSE:MMM) plummeted after the company reported first-quarter earnings this week because of a small reduction in full-year earnings guidance. 3M management still expects the company to grow organically at a rate of 3% to 4% this year, and it expects earnings per share (after pulling out one-time items such as a legal settlement) to be $10.20 to $10.55, which is up 11% to 15% from a year ago. But that wasn’t enough for investors.

Bulls were stampeded on Tuesday.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average  lost 424 points, or 1.74%, the S&P 500  handed over 1.34% and the Nasdaq Composite   shed 1.68%. But, it was cautious comments by Caterpillar execs on the demand outlook for the rest of 2018 during an earnings call that sent the bears out of hibernation. Not helping market sentiment were 10-year yields topping the 3% mark for the first time in more than four years.

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) took just a smidge of a haircut after releasing its first-quarter report, despite putting up huge ad revenue growth. What gives? 3M (NYSE:MMM) followed a knockout 2017 with a not-so-great start to the new year, but long-term investors shouldn’t sweat it too hard. Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) held its annual meeting today, and despite its CEO’s stated devotion to rebuilding customer trust, things don’t look so great for the bank — and could look even worse in a few weeks after Berkshire Hathaway’s (NYSE:BRK-A) (NYSE:BRK-B) annual meeting. When ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) acquired its master limited partnership last year, the company thought the deal would give it enough fuel to grow its dividend 21% in 2017 and at a 9% to 11% annual pace through 2021. At the time, the two pipeline companies had between $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion of growth projects under development, which ONEOK thought would provide it with enough fuel to achieve that aim. Fast-forward not more than a year later, and the company has now secured more than $6 billion of expansions, which should give it the fuel to grow its earnings at an accelerated clip in the coming years, making it an excellent stock for those seeking both growth and income.

At first glance, pipeline giant ONEOK (NYSE:OKE) appears to offer income-seeking investors a superior opportunity when compared to fellow pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB). Not only does ONEOK have a higher yield — 4.9% versus 4.5% for Williams — but it expects to increase its payout at a 9% to 11% annual pace through 2021 while Williams’ current forecast is that it will boost its dividend 10% to 15% in 2019. However, when we drill down a bit deeper, we find one metric that puts Williams Companies’ dividend ahead of ONEOK’s for investors seeking a lower-risk payout.
