Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

For this episode of Motley Fool Answers, Robert Brokamp and Alison Southwick bring in an outside expert to discuss one of the more fraught and complex challenges that many of us will face as adults: becoming a primary caregiver for an aging loved one. It’s a position that can sap your time, your energy, your emotions and your finances — and that’s when things are going normally. In addition to being a pro on the subject, their guest, the AARP’s Amy Goyer, has traveled this path with multiple family members, and she has plenty of straightforward, actionable advice to share.

In this segment, she talks about the extra challenges of being a long-distance caregiver. In our highly mobile society, it’s very possible no effective surrogate will be living anywhere near an elderly relative when they need more frequent assistance. But even if there is one, those who live farther away can’t just delegate all the responsibility on the one who has proximity.

A full transcript follows the video.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Suncor Energy Inc.(SU)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Even though Canadian oil giant Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) has been a cash-generating machine for its investors in recent quarters, the company continues to struggle with one of its premier assets: Syncrude. The oil-sands mining and upgrading facilities for this massive project in Alberta have been shut down or not running at full capacity several times over the past few years, and it is keeping Suncor from realizing its full potential.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Toronto Dominion Bank increased its position in shares of Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) (TSE:SU) by 30.9% during the first quarter, according to the company in its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. The firm owned 9,779,382 shares of the oil and gas producer’s stock after acquiring an additional 2,309,941 shares during the period. Suncor Energy makes up about 0.8% of Toronto Dominion Bank’s investment portfolio, making the stock its 11th largest position. Toronto Dominion Bank owned approximately 0.60% of Suncor Energy worth $337,645,000 at the end of the most recent quarter.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) has richly rewarded investors over the past year. Not only has the stock vastly outperformed both the S&P 500 and most other oil stocks, but it has returned a boatload of cash to shareholders through a higher dividend and share repurchases. Cash returns could rise some more in the coming months thanks two recently completed expansion projects and higher oil prices. These catalysts could be just the fuel this Canadian oil stock needs to continue outperforming.

With raw materials costs starting to pick up, many manufacturers are reporting inflationary pressures that could hurt profits. Yet even as the broader indexes fell, some individual companies had good news to report. Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Jason Hall, and Matthew DiLallo]

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Williams Companies is in the midst of a major transition. It recently agreed to acquire the rest of its MLP, Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ), in a $10.4 billion deal. The pipeline giant is making this acquisition so that it can more easily finance the expansion projects Williams Partners has under development. The transaction would allow it to free up some cash flow and improve its credit metrics, giving it more financial flexibility.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Rich Smith, and Keith Noonan]

A stock that gains 25% in less than a year is going to turn a lot of heads on Wall Street. It’s also going to make you ask yourself if the stock still has lots of room to run or if it’s headed for a crash. Last week, the biggest news out of the oil patch was that OPEC agreed to hike its output by 1 million barrels per day (BPD) starting next month. That announcement drove oil prices higher because OPEC didn’t boost production as much as some thought it might. However, while that news grabbed headlines, an under-the-radar report about issues at Suncor Energy’s (NYSE:SU) Syncrude oil sands facility in Canada could have an even bigger impact on oil prices in the U.S. over the next few months.

Top 5 Stocks For 2019

Most people have jobs. They faithfully go to work each morning, do their best to execute their duties, come home tired, and look forward to weekends and vacations.   They do this to make ends meet, hoping something better will come along. And better things do come now and then, along with setbacks. But the drudgery continues. Week in. Week out. Forty years pass. Life has been half miserable. But it's time for retirement.   Retirement means getting out of job jail. No more hated work. It's now time for relaxation and fun…   Just kidding!   As it turns out, retirement today is this: After giving up a fairly well-paid full-time job, you take on several poorly paid part-time jobs (without benefits) to pay for your ever-increasing retirement expenses.   But it doesn't have to be that way…   You can spare yourself the misery by ditching the job early on and replacing it with a career.

Oil and gas investors have been through the wringer over the past few years. Even the most stable investments in this industry — pipelines, processing, and logistics — haven’t been spared. Case in point: Shares of Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) have declined 18% over the past three years despite the company posting consistent revenue and cash flow growth. To top it off, there has been a slew of regulatory and tax changes in recent months that will have a significant impact on this particular industry.

Kinder Morgan, Inc. (NYSE:KMI) is one of the largest midstream companies in North America, and it has major dividend plans between 2018 and 2020. By the end of that period, it expects to increase its dividend from $0.50 per share per year (in 2017) to $1.25. That’s huge dividend growth in a short period of time. But don’t get too enamored by that news; the dividend will still be lower than it was before the midstream oil and gas company’s 75% dividend cut in 2016. If you’re looking for dividend income in the midstream space, take a look at longtime dividend payers ONEOK, Inc. (NYSE:OKE) and Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE:MMP) instead.

Best Low Price Stocks To Watch For 2018

A few days ago, an article about Nike (NYSE:NKE) argued that “Nike’s shares aren’t priced to buy.” The reasoning was that “Nike is, at best, fairly valued. And it certainly isn’t trading hands at fire-sale prices.” The question is: should you expect (and wait for) fire-sales prices? Most value investors know the maxim that it is better to buy a great business at a fair price than to buy a mediocre business at low price. We think that Nike is a great business at a fair price. We have been waiting for Nike’s price to come down for a long time and meanwhile, we have sold PUT options, though unfortunately these options have never been exercised (but we cashed-in premiums). Today, we bought the stock.

Reasons to avoid the stock

We invest with a long-term view and therefore we ask long-term questions:

Has the management of Nike changed its strategy? Is Nike’s long-term strategy ultimately going to fail? Is there anything that can or has damaged the Nike brand?

Of course, competition is there, but is there any industry where there is no long-term competition? Under Armour (NYSE:UAA), Adidas (OTCQX:ADDDF), Lululemon (NASDAQ:LULU) are all good companies, but they have always been there. Under Armour and Lululemon are perceived as new entrants, but they were actually founded 20 years ago (in 1996 and 1998), Adidas is almost a century old, while Nike is “only” 52-years old. So, what has changed? These industries move in waves, but the quality of the Nike brand, its management, and innovation have been a constant. In sum, if your answer to any of the previous questions is YES, then you should reconsider our investment thesis. If it is NO, then we can move on to the next paragraph.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU) – “We expect modestly below-consensus results driven by
downtime and the ramp costs at Fort Hills. We still see a robust second-half 2018 and 2019 free cash flow story and would recommend investors look through any near-term
    noise.”

I don’t know if you have noticed, but oil prices have been on the rise lately, which has done miraculous things for the bottom lines at oil and gas companies. Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk looked dead tired and in need of a sandwich in a new CBS interview that filled up Twitter feeds over the weekend. It’s great to see Musk allegedly sleeping in an office on the production floor – not many CEOs of companies with a market cap of more than $50 billion would do the same in an effort to drive desired performance.

At this rate, ‘Jolt’ will become nothing more than a morning Tesla (TSLA) blog that so happens to be delivered straight to your email inbox. Keeping up with the daily news flow on Elon Musk’s car creation is becoming darn near impossible. There is around-the-clock speculation on production goals. People hop into chat rooms to complain about Model 3 build quality and factory working conditions. Musk always looms large on Twitter. There are YouTube videos of people passing parking lots filled with just produced Model 3s.
