A new day, a new political scandal adding pressure to U.S. stocks. But who needs to worry about what President Donald Trump will say next or who he will fire? Investors looking to hedge their positions against the political landscape should look global, that’s who — at least according to Ben Beneche of AMG Pictet International Fund.

Speaking as a guest on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” segment Wednesday, Beneche pointed out an overlooked fact many American investors tend to forget: Investment opportunities exist outside of the U.S. borders.

One of Beneche’s top global picks is Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE: SNE). The Japan-based company has “dramatically” changed over the past few years from operating divisions that deliver losses in mobile, PC and TV to now making profits in “great” franchises such as PlayStation and music with plenty of secular drivers ahead.

W&T Offshore Inc. (NYSE: WTI) had a big buy hit the tape last week. CEO Tracy Krohn picked up a massive 1,180,888 shares of the independent oil and natural gas producer at $1.94 per share. The total for the trade came in right at the $2 million level. The company engages in the acquisition, exploration and development of oil and natural gas properties in the Gulf of Mexico. • [By John Bromels]

Shares of oil and gas drillerW&T Offshore(NYSE:WTI) fell throughout April, finishing the month at $2.04 per share, down 26.4%.

W&T is a small company primarily focused on natural gas liquids production in the Gulf of Mexico. In April, its market cap dropped about $100 million to $280 million. Huge swings like that aren’t uncommon for small companies, but what was unusual was the apparent lack of rationale for the drop.

investment meaning: Staples, Inc.(SPLS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Shares of Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLS) got a boost, shooting up 7 percent to $9.25 on chatter that the company is targeted for an acquisition. Sycamore Partners, a private equity giant, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire the office supply retailer, Reuters reported. The deal could value Staples at more than $6 billion, a premium to Staples' valuation of $5.60 billion as of Wednesday's market close.

CFRA’s Efraim Levy doesn’t see a “natural buyer” for Staples but remain Buy rated anyway:

Shares are higher on an unconfirmed WSJ report that SPLS is looking at the possible sale of the company. Our fundamentally valued 12-month target of $11, applies a below historical average P/E of 12.1X our FY 18 EPS estimate, given office industry challenges. Our target has 11% upside, plus a 5.5% yield. We don’t see a natural buyer for a large physical store office supply presence, although an activist/private-equity buyer is a possibility. To make an acquisition worthwhile, a buyer would have to be more aggressive in cost cutting and use of cash flow than SPLS’s existing plan.

Staples’ market capitalization rose to $6.2 billion today from $5.7 billion yesterday. It reported a net loss of $459 million on sales of $18.2 billion in fiscal 2017.

Although 2016 wasn’t exactly the greatest year for healthcare stocks in general, there really aren’t very many true bargains to be found in the industry. However, three healthcare stocks do appear to be priced well below what they’re worth. Here’s why Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD), Lantheus Holdings (NASDAQ:LNTH), and Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) look to be ridiculously cheap right now.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Though drugmaker Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ:GILD) has lost 25% over the trailing-12-month period, underperforming the S&P 500 by 41 percentage points, I believe now would be the perfect time for income investors to give it a closer look.

While the direct revenue exposure to the UK is relatively small across our coverage (aside fromTyco and Idex), the potential impact from Brexit is much more widespread across the continent and the world. The impact should be most negative for our companies with larger industrial exposure to Europe, just as we have begun to hear incrementally positive commentary regarding Europe.Idex andTyco have some of the highest direct exposures to UK and Europe but Tyco’s business should be relatively more stable and in any case theJohnson Controls (JCI) synergies loom large. Eaton (ETN) and Emerson Electric, though with slightly smaller exposure, are more involved with industrial spending.Danaher andHoneywell have high revenue exposure, but we believe that their more benign end market exposure should mitigate some of the negative consequences they face. We rate Allegion (ALLE), Danaher, Dover (DOV), Fortive (FTV), Honeywell, Ingersoll-Rand (IR), Pentair (PNR) andTyco Outperform; Emerson Electric, Eaton, General Electric (GE),Idex and 3M (MMM) Market-Perform; Rockwell Automation (ROK) Underperform.

Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO) dropped nearly 26% Friday to post a new 52-week low of $10.85 after closing at $14.65 on Thursday. The 52-week high is $34.38. Welcome to The Salary Chronicles, where we’re bringing transparency to negotiation and salaries, one story at a time. We ask women to share their experiences negotiating their salary and what their advice is for others doing the same. We share these stories anonymously so they feel comfortable speaking as openly and as freely as possible.

This week we’re speaking with a woman prioritized the benefit of telecommuting so much, she almost undervalued herself in her job search.

Title: Director of Product Strategy

Location: Florida

Original salary: $103K

New salary: $118K + 15% bonus

What was the situation?

I had been working at a company for a couple of years, and while I really enjoyed it, the commute was brutal. I commuted 3 hours each day and that left me with a really limited amount of time to spend with my kids. I was a strong employee so the company let me experiment with working from home, but I knew it wasn’t a long term solution. I felt disconnected from my co-workers in the office and had trouble actively participating in meetings when I called in. I knew that if I wanted to make my telecommuting permanent while not impeding my career progression, I needed to find a company that had a virtual workforce, rather than try to be effective as the one employee who worked from home.

Although they were losing sales regularly to Amazon, they thoughtplacing lockersin their stores could also result in the sale of an extra ream of paper or a few capacitors and potentiometers. Instead what they found was customers were simply buying their paper, ink cartridges, and electronic gadgets on Amazon and picking them up in their stores. After just a year, Staples and RadioShack abruptly ended the program.

Top Undervalued Stocks To Own Right Now: GTx Inc.(GTXI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One biopharmaceutical player that’s rapidly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is GTx (GTXI), which is dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecules that selectively target hormone pathways to treat cancer, osteoporosis and bone loss, muscle loss and other serious medical condition. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 53%.

If you look at the chart for GTx, you’ll notice that this stock recently gapped down sharply from over $4 to below $1.50 a share with heavy downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of GTXI have rebounded sharply and started to uptrend, with the stock moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.96 a share. During that move, shares of GTXI have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GTXI within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GTXI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.35 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GTXI will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started just above $4 a share. Some possible upside targets if GTXI gets into that gap with volume are $2.50 to $3 a share, or possibly even $3.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy GTXI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.50 a share. One can also buy GTXI off strength once it takes out $1.96 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

how to day trade

Good morning and happy holidays! I hope you got your fill of Santa Claus yesterday because the official start of the “Santa Claus rally” on Wall Street is falling flat so far.

Friday marked the official start of the rally, and the major market indices all finished relatively ho-hum.

The situation is similar after the open this morning, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average flat, S&P 500 off 0.07% and Nasdaq-100 down 0.54%.

What’s more, options volume on Friday was among the lowest totals of the year. Only about 13.3 million calls and 10.6 million puts changed hands on the session. The CBOE single-session equity put/call volume ratio rose to 0.64 and the 10-day moving average ticked higher to 0.57.

Taking a closer look at Friday’s options activity, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) and Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) were smacked lower after cryptocurrency prices plunged as much as 30% on the session. Meanwhile, Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX) call options were once again popular after the merger deadline with AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) was pushed back to June.

how to day trade: Hertz Global Holdings Inc(HTZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market continued to climb sharply on Wednesday, sending major market benchmarks to record highs yet again and propelling the Dow Jones Industrials up more than 100 points. Economic data continued to support the notion that the U.S. economy remains strong, and rising inflation levels led many to conclude that the Federal Reserve is more likely than ever to follow through on its promise to keep lifting short-term interest rates in 2017. Rising bond yields reflected investors’ reluctance to hold onto fixed-income investments in anticipation of higher rates, prompting some to shift assets into the stock market. Several companies also reported, andFortress Investment Group (NYSE:FIG), Editas Medicine (NASDAQ:EDIT), and Hertz Global Holdings (NYSE:HTZ) were among the top performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

As the spread between short-term and long-terminterest rates began to contract, strangling profits, competition for MBSes also caused prices to rise. Other agency mREITs were nervous, too. Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018

Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS) and Big 5 Sporting Goods (NASDAQ:BGFV) have both had a great 2016. As far as stock performance goes, Big 5 is the winner this year. But which company is in better shape for the new year?

Data source: YCharts..

Riding a wave of positive news

Both companies have benefited during the pastyear from a couple of positive developments. First up, the now ironically named Sports Authority went out of business. The former competitor entered bankruptcy anticipating reemerging a stronger business. That didn’t happen, and no savior stepped in to rescue the failed retailer. A fire sale ensued, and the company’s stores shut down, leaving remaining sports merchandisers to pick up the pieces.

In addition to that development, consumer spending on sporting goods rose during the year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, sales of sports merchandise rose 3.7% over 2015 through the end of November. Those two factors contributed to both companies, posting positive sales growth even as brick-and-mortar retail, in general, struggled this year.

MGM Resorts International (MGM) always had two things going for it: It’s large Las Vegas footprint to counter the weakness in Macau, and it’s real-estate, which it spun off into MGM Growth Properties (MGP). But when MGM reported weaker than expected earnings this morning, it wasn’t a good sign that Las Vegas was disappointing. Wells Fargo’sCameron McKnight explains:

    Getty Images

Q4 Las Vegas EBITDA of $365mm was 10% ($40MM) below the Street. Las Vegas 4Q RevPAR growth of +3% was in-line with guidance, but below our expectations and industry data. For the 1Q17, MGM provided RevPAR guidance of 7%, a point or two below our expectations. We estimate revenue growth per visitor was +1.5% yr/yr. RevPOR (other revenue per occupied room) growth was +1.5%. We estimate expenses were +1% yr/yr. We expect the stock to be trade down on this morning’s release. Top 10 Stocks To Own For 2018: Staples, Inc.(SPLS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Rich Duprey]

A few years ago, office-supplies retailerStaples(NASDAQ:SPLS)and electronics store RadioShack thought they could benefit from the e-tailer’s sales prowess.
