Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018

What happened

Crude prices crumbled on Wednesday, closing more than 5% down to around $50 per barrel, after oil inventories jumped to a new record. Overall, crude stockpiles rose by 8.2 million barrels, according to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which was well above the analyst consensus for a 1.97 million-barrel increase. It was the ninth straight weekly increase in crude stockpiles and came even though OPEC and several non-member nations have reduced their output to drain the market’s oversupply. While most participating countries are following through with their pledges, rising shale supplies and falling demand from China are counteracting the impact of the output reduction.

That sell-off in the oil market weighed on financially challenged oil stocks, which will struggle if crude continues dropping. Among the biggest losers were Abraxas Petroleum (NASDAQ:AXAS), Whiting Petroleum (NYSE:WLL), Denbury Resources (NYSE:DNR), California Resources (NYSE:CRC), and Cobalt International Energy (NYSE:CIE).

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: EQT Corporation(EQT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Gary Jakacky]

On the other hand, our economy shows more strength by the day. Oil prices remain stuck in a five year range. Natural gas prices are testing new lows: successful fracking techniques recently announced by EQT Corporation (EQT) in Seeking Alpha (10/17/2013 @ 2:29 PM on Market Currents) could cut over $1.5 billion from the costs of drilling for gas, as well as assuage "environmentalist" concerns about fracking. Fuel is a major cost for transportation companies. So maybe IYT can catch a third breath?

  • [By Chris Lange]

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT) which traded down about 9% at $53.50. The stocks 52-week range is $52.67 to $80.61. Volume was over 21.5 million versus the daily average of 2.2 million shares.

  • [By Elizabeth Balboa]

The activist hedge fund’s latest 13F revealed a stake in Resolute Energy Corp (NYSE: REN), and on Monday, it announced a new position in EQT Corporation (NYSE: EQT).

  • [By Joel South and Taylor Muckerman]

In today’s segment, Joel South talks about an intriguing development from EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT  ) and Green Field Services, where the companies drilled a multistage fracked natural gas well in the Marcellus shale using 100% field natural gas. Using natural gas from close wells instead ofdieselto power rigs could be another game changer as oil and gas companies continue to increase drilling efficiencies and thereby significantly lower costs.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: Joy Global Inc.(JOY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Income investors appreciate stocks that pay lucrative dividends, and recently, many companies have seen the value in treating shareholders well by boosting their regular payouts. Yet a few holdouts simply don’t show their appreciation for their investors through dividends. For whatever reason, rather than having no dividend at all, Joy Global (NYSE:JOY), Textron (NYSE:TXT), and Global Payments (NYSE:GPN) maintain the tiniest of quarterly payments. Let’s look more closely at these stocks to see why they do what they do with their dividends.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: Newfield Exploration Company(NFX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Lear also sees strong “upside potential” forConcho Resources (CXO), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) and Newfield Exploration (NFX) as well performance improves in the Permian/STACK, and also writes positively on Devon Energy (DVN).

  • [By Lisa Levin]

In trading on Wednesday, energy shares fell by 1.27 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Newfield Exploration Co. (NYSE: NFX), down 9 percent, and Parker Drilling Company (NYSE: PKD), down 14 percent.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was an up-and-down day for the stock market, which lost substantial ground early in the day only to climb back toward the unchanged mark by the end of the session. A slight rise for the Dow Jones Industrials led to yet another record-high close, and although other major market benchmarks weren’t quite as lofty, they nevertheless finished with only modest losses on the day. Generally favorable news and sentiment helped the market bounce back during the day, but some stocks still finished lower. Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX), Global Blood Therapeutics (NASDAQ:GBT), and Nautilus (NYSE:NLS) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The large cap E&Ps we cover raised ~ $6.5 billion of equity in 2015 and are likely to consider additional issuance in 2016. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) raised $1.3 billion on January 5th and Hess Corp. (HES) raised $1.5 billion of equity/equity-linked earlier this month. We think highly leveraged companies such as Devon Energy,Encana andRange Resources (RRC) and companies with a large deficit (before asset sales), such asAnadarko Petroleum and Devon Energy, are most likely to consider raising equity. Additionally, we believe companies such as WPX Energy (WPX), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Marathon Oil, Continental Resources (CLR),Noble Energy and Newfield Exploration (NFX) could issue equity while several levered companies may be unwilling or unable to access equity markets. We do not think Apache, Canadian Natural Resource, EOG Resources (EOG), Occidental Petroleum orPioneer Natural Resources are likely to issue equity this year.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Large Caps. Our E&P coverage is pricing in $61/bbl WTI and $3.30 gas, and with a lower crude forecast the group is looking less compelling. We argue names that continue to demonstrate resource improvement at the low-end of the cost curve, namely in the Permian and STACK remain attractive, such as Concho Resources (CXO), Devon Energy (DVN), Newfield Exploration (NFX) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). Noble (NBL) remains a compelling value, though has yet to commit to an accelerated US onshore drilling program.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2018: Core Laboratories N.V.(CLB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Core Laboratories (NYSE:CLB) literally has its ear to the ground when it comes to deciphering what’s going on in the oil market. The company studies oil reservoirs, which tell it what’s happening with production, giving it a deep level of understanding on the supply side of the market. Core Labs takes what the reservoirs are saying, compares this with other data, and then blends it into an informed macro view of the oil market, which CEO David Demshur shared on the company’s recent quarterly earnings conference call. Here are five things he says the reservoirs are telling us about what’s really going on in the oil market.

Oil prices haven’t gotten off to the fast start many expected, falling around 6% on average during the first quarter of the year. Three stocks we really like right now are DistributionNOW(NYSE:DNOW),Phillips 66(NYSE:PSX), andConocoPhillips(NYSE:COP), which all should do well in the current oil market.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Own For 2018: Matador Resources Company(MTDR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

In this article I will point out some of the things that should bother Ford Shareholders. I’ll make some recommendations. I will also compare Ford (NYSE:F) to General Motors (NYSE:GM), and their treatment towards Shareholders.

Introduction:

Ford is one of the world’s largest automobile manufactures. Annually, over the last four years they’ve averaged $148 billion in revenue, and around $6 billion in net-profit. This is not a high margin business. However, the business has been consistently and solidly profitable since the great recession. The consistent earnings however have done NOTHING for the Share price. As a matter of fact the Share price is down 30% over the last three years.

With the Shares trending ever-downwards, I think it is time for Ford to consider some new / different strategies:

Buybacks:

I think it is time for Ford to consider MASSIVE stock buybacks. What could be more sensible than buying your own company stock when it is trading at a huge discount to intrinsic value? Shouldn’t the Ford management team (and family) should be familiar enough with the company to understand that it is deeply undervalued?! And, they have $17 billion per year (three year average) coming in Operating cash-flow!

Top 5 Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now: NXP Semiconductors N.V.(NXPI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Anders Bylund]

NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) is knee-deep in a pending merger with sector rival Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM). There was a time when it would have made sense to pick up NXP shares, even if you missed the 25% buyout surge in September.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) stock price has now fallen below the crucial 20-day, 50-day and 100-day moving averages. Its legal issues have again weighed heavy on QCOM stock of late. QCOM stock has a crucial support at the $52.66 level, which is just below the last closing price (on April 13). Qualcomm stock has not fallen below these levels in 2017.A fall below this level means QCOM stock could drop, moving close to itsone-year lows. However, two popular momentum indicators Bollinger Bands and Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicators suggest that QCOM stock is oversold. The technicals depict mixed scenario for QCOM stock. QCOM stock has lost momentum going into its Q2 earnings, with the stock losing more than 5% in the last 5 trading sessions and is still down more than 10.5% YTD. QCOM stock still makes a good long-term investment, especially with the $47B NXP Semiconductor (NASDAQ:NXPI) acquisition lined up. The smartphone chipset maker’s stock is also named the top dividend stock with insider buying and has adividend yield of 4.27%. Long-term investors with a high-risk appetite might relish buying QCOM stock at such low levels. However, it would be prudent for risk-averse investors to stay on the sidelines till the Q2 earnings, which would give a better picture of Qualcomm’s present legal woes and its future implications.

  • [By Jack Foley]

Furthermore, the NXP Semiconductor (NSDQ:NXPI) acquisition should enable Qualcomm to really become a frontrunner in the lucrative automotive area. There have been rumors that the deal could hit some roadblocks but I see the acquisition eventually going through sometime this year. Qualcomm will want to push its processor business into the automotive market and NXP with its extensive number of loyal distributorsand customers should be able to help here in a big way. Billions are being plowed into theautonomous vehicle market at present and first mover advantage is going to be critical. One would feel that the combined technologies of the Qualcomm/NXP partnership should gain ground here as theIoT phenomenon continues to gain traction. Qualcomm already has a presence here with its Snapdragon processors in some Android Auto IVI systems. For a start, if NXP’sRFCMOS chips (which do away with multi-chip systems) can meaningfully add value to Qualcomm’s current offering in this space, the new partnership could leapfrog a number of competitors in a short span of time, which will be one more positive for QCOM stock.

Intel Is Getting Serious About Self-Driving Cars, But It’s Not All Smooth Roads Ahead
The chip giant’s (INTC) deals with Delphi and BMW are proof it’s taking the autonomous driving market seriously. But Nvidia (NVDA) and Qualcomm (QCOM) /NXP (NXPI) present stiff competition. Full story

  • [By WWW.KIPLINGER.COM]

The chipmaker has agreed to acquire NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) for $110 a share, or about $39 billion. That’s more than worth it for what NXP brings to the table.

  • [By Sreekanth Anasa]

Qualcomm stock has continued rise steadilyeven after the initialpop on account of the news of Broadcom’s multi-billion dollar acquisition offer. Investors were waiting for further gains from this catalyst as experts and the markets were hoping for the Irvine, California-based semiconductor giant to soon come up with an increased offer with the initial offer being rejected. The new bid was expected to come next week when a proposal to replace the current set of Qualcomm board directors is to be tabled. Now, if one goes by the latest reports, it seems thatBroadcom isn’t planning to propose a new increased bid until sometime closer to Qualcomms board meeting in March. This is a good three months away. Qualcomm’s bid to close the NXP Semiconductor (NASDAQ:NXPI) acquisition is also acting as a roadblock for Broadcom to table an increased offer. Reports state that Broadcom could also likely wait till the regulatory bodies give a green signal to the NXP deal which again as per both the companies involved is likely to see a closure only sometime early next year.
