Hot China Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Wall Street is living and dying on every trade headline, underlining how sensitive investors are to the threat of a full-blown trade war.

Stocks soared on Monday after news that American and Chinese officials are holding behind-the-scenes talks aimed at averting a trade disaster.

Only days ago, President Trump’s crackdown on China’s trade tactics and fears of retaliation sent the market to its worst week in two years.

The head-spinning moves on Wall Street show that no one can say for certain how Trump’s volatile trade agenda will play out. Can his administration negotiate better trade conditions with China before the situation gets out of control?

“The market is now worried about an escalation into a full-blown trade war,” Morgan Stanley equity strategist Michael Wilson wrote in a report on Monday.

“While it is difficult to know how trade tensions will pan out in the end, the good news is that a bad scenario is quickly getting priced in,” he wrote.

Thursday was a relatively quiet day on Wall Street, and action in different parts of the market showed mixed signals for investors. On one hand, small-cap stocks moved higher, with key benchmarks in that area hitting record highs. Yet the better-known large-cap stock indexes like the S&P 500 gave up early gains. Looking more closely at individual stocks, some companies suffered from bad news that sent their shares falling. J.C. Penney (NYSE:JCP), NetEase (NASDAQ:NTES), and Jounce Therapeutics (NASDAQ:JNCE) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Baidu (BIDU) recently filed a draft prospectus with the SEC to IPO iQiyi, who many call China’s Netflix. Although Baidu has not disclosed how much capital it wants to raise, analysts have previously estimated that iQiyi would likely IPO in the valuation range of $8-$10 billion and that Baidu might seek to raise around $1 billion. Given that Baidu currently holds 80.5% of iQiyi and expects to remain the majority shareholder after the IPO, any increase in iQiyi’s stock would benefit Baidu shares. Baidu itself is worth $86 billion in market cap.

iQiyi is a leader in a huge market

One reason iQiyi is called the Netflix of China is that it streams some Netflix (NFLX) shows, thanks to a licensing agreement struck in April 2017. Netflix has not been a major player in China due to Chinese government regulation that stipulated no service have over 30% foreign content.

Another reason is that iQiyi is a major player in the online video sector. In terms of mobile MAUs in China, iQiyi is an undisputed force, along with Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY) Video and Alibaba (BABA)’s Yukou Tudou. As of August 2017, Tencent Video was the market leader by a hair, with 457 million mobile MAUs, and iQiyi was a close second, with 442 million. Yukou Tudou, which Alibaba bought for a valuation of $5.4 billion in 2016, was third, with around 325 million mobile MAUs.

Top 5 China Stocks For 2019

Genworth Financial Inc. jumped the most in almost two years after a U.S. national-security panel approved the $2.7 billion buyout of the company by China Oceanwide Holdings Group Co.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., which reviews foreign acquisitions of American businesses, found “no unresolved national-security concerns” with the proposed deal, Genworth said Saturday.

That was “somewhat surprising,” given challenges other deals from Chinese buyers have faced, according to Tom Gallagher, an analyst at Evercore Partners Inc. At least 10 Chinese deals for U.S. firms have collapsed during the Trump administration amid security concerns raised by CFIUS.

The approval fueled a 26 percent gain in Genworth shares to $4.80 at 1:42 p.m. in New York, the biggest intraday increase since August 2016.

After the unprecedented summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, the array of international sanctions on North Korea is back in focus.

The United States pushed through a series of UN resolutions last year that significantly escalated the pressure on North Korea’s economy in response to Pyongyang’s repeated tests to advance its nuclear weapons program.

China, which accounts for the vast majority of North Korea’s foreign trade, said it was enforcing the sanctions, despite skepticism from some analysts.

After the summit Tuesday, China hinted that sanctions relief could follow the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore.

“The relevant UN resolutions say based on how North Korea has followed and implemented the resolutions, sanctions can be adjusted accordingly, including suspending or lifting relevant measures,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

Trump said at a news conference in Singapore that sanctions would only be removed “when we are sure the nukes are no longer a factor.” He acknowledged that could take a long time.

China is seeing signs of success in its fight against smog as pollution levels slump dramatically in the capital region Beijing.

Concentrations of PM2.5 — the tiny particles that pose the greatest health risks — plunged 33 percent from a year earlier in the fourth quarter across Beijing, Tianjin and 26 surrounding cities, Greenpeace East Asia said in a report Thursday. Levels in the capital alone tumbled 54 percent. The drops come after government policies last year forced millions of homes and businesses to switch from coal to cleaner-burning natural gas.

The bluer skies came at a price, as the widespread switching to natural gas contributed to shortages of the fuel, leaving homes frigid and factories shut. Still, improving air quality is a win for President Xi Jinping, who pledged to unleash an “iron hand” against pollution, and anti-coal measures will likely continue, according to Sanford C.
