The Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF may be closer to getting SEC approval.

New changes to the Bitcoin ETF have beefed up the fund’s oversight and security, two things that should improve the odds of winning Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approval.

The Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust (BATS: COIN) filed a seventh amendment to its S-1 request with the SEC to create an exchange-traded fund based on Bitcoin on Tuesday. It’s been more than three years since the initial filing, but this year significant progress has been made.

In particular, the BATS Exchange, where the Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF will trade, filed for a rule change with the SEC in June to allow the creation of a derivative based on the digital currency. That filing started a clock that requires the SEC to rule one way or the other by March 2017.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Jubak, Senior Markets Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The one currency that is running against the weak dollar tide is the Japanese yen. The yen initially climbed on the Fed’s no taper decision—rising to 97.75 on the news—but then fell all the way back to 99 yen to the dollar and finished yesterday at 99.42. (Remember that since the yen is quoted in yen to the dollar, a higher number is a sign of a weak yen and a smaller number means the yen is getting stronger.) The thinking seems to be that the recent Japanese trade deficit will push the Bank of Japan to further weaken the yen, in order to boost Japanese exports. I continue to think that the yen will finish 2013 at weaker levels than current trading, and that leads me to continue to hold positions in Japanese stocks such as Toyota Motor (TM) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MTU). Both stocks are members of my Jubaks Picks portfolio.

small stocks: Palo Alto Networks, Inc.(PANW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Harsh Chauhan]

Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW) stock has rallied about 5% in May (as of this writing), thanks to fellow cybersecurity specialist FireEye’s robust first-quarter results. It appears that FireEye’s impressive full-year guidance helped to trigger a rally for Palo Alto before major cybersecurity attacks across the world lifted shares for the entire industry. All of this activity must come as a sigh of relief for Palo Alto investors after the stock sank over 20% in a single day following disappointing second-quarter results and weak guidance.

A long term performance chart shows Barracuda Networks peaking in 2015 before drifting into underperformance and then back up againwhile mid cap Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ: FTNT) and large cap Palo Alto Networks Inc (NYSE: PANW) also peaked in 2015 and bounced back a bit last year:

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Palo Alto Networks Inc (NYSE: PANW) was down, falling around 23 percent to $116.87. Palo Alto posted upbeat Q2 earnings, but sales missed expectations. The company also issued a weak forecast for the current quarter. JP Morgan downgraded Palo Alto from Overweight to Neutral, while Baird downgraded the stock from Outperform to Neutral.

  • [By Harsh Chauhan]

Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW) will look for redemption when it releases its second-quarter fiscal 2017 results after the bell on Feb. 28. The network security specialist had offered a weaker-than-expected outlook in its last quarterly report as some of its deals requiring “additional approvals” got pushed back.

RB: I thought wed be up more than we are on cybersecurity plays. We have 25% gains on recommendations like Palo Alto Networks (NYSE: PANW). Were off a few percentage points on CyberArk Software (NASDAQ: CYBR).

Last November, I compared Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW) with FireEye (NASDAQ:FEYE) to see which one was the better play on the growing cybersecurity market. I concluded that FireEye was a slightly better pick than Palo Alto, due to its cost-cutting measures, lower valuation, and takeover potential.

small stocks: Ethan Allen Interiors Inc.(ETH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Wednesday was a strong day for the stock market, as the Dow finished up nearly 100 points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both posted gains as well. Investors remained generally upbeat about the prospects for the U.S. economy in 2017, and a rise in crude oil prices helped lift the energy sector higher during the market session. Yet comments during a press conference from President-elect Donald Trump weighed on the healthcare sector, and some individual stocks took particularly hard hits. Among the worst performers were Perrigo (NYSE:PRGO), Novadaq Technologies (NASDAQ:NVDQ), and Ethan Allen Interiors (NYSE:ETH). Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

small stocks: Stanley Black & Decker Inc.(SWK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Money Morning Staff Reports]

Back in January, the company sold its iconic Craftsman brand to Stanley Black & Decker Inc. (NYSE: SWK) for $900 billion, although not all of it was in an upfront payment. Sears will still carry the brand in its stores, but now they must compete with other retailers to make any profit from it. And guess who else carries it now? Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN). Great for Stanley shareholders, but not so much for Sears shareholders.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

The only disappointment here is the latest moves highlight what might have been possible with the Craftsman tool brand had Sears not ended up selling it to Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE:SWK). Although there was some creative thinking involved in the way the deal was structured, giving Sears a percentage of the revenues from Craftsman sales that Stanley generates for the next few years as well as allowing it to also make and sell Craftsman tools for the next decade, it’s a shame Sears had to let the brand go.

There are lots of stories like that out there these days. I can’t explain to you how amazing that is. Here are three stocks that have spent months and months in purgatory when they have missed or guided down or slashed forecasts. Now they are up gigantically.

Mercer Bullard: Think DOLs Fiduciary Rule Is Too Strict? Blame SEC

Gundlach Sounds Fed Alarm, Warns of Selloff Near Inauguration Day

This week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce added to the welter of speculation over the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule’s fate.

Chamber CEO Thomas Donohue said the organization is urging the incoming Trump administration’s transition team to undo the regulation. To date, the Trump administration hasn’t communicated its position on the rule.

Some firms have begun to release those changes along with education initiatives for advisors. Others have kept compliance efforts close to the vest for competitive purposes, said Larson.

But all will have to start releasing their intended course of action, and soon, in order to avoid the litigation and competition risks that will come from not being prepared for implementation.

Melissa Dimitri, a senior manager in Grant Thornton’s Advisory Services, which provides strategic consulting to financial services and insurance companies, says her team is not swayed by the back-and-forth speculation over the rule’s fate.

The stock market once again proved its resiliency on Wednesday, bouncing back from extensive declines early in the session to recover most of its losses. The Dow Jones Industrials actually managed to post yet another record close with a modest gain, and although other major market benchmarks suffered declines, they weren’t significant. Moreover, some favorable news from certain pockets of the market helped bolster investor confidence. stock report: Ultra Petroleum Corp.(UPL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By STOCKPICKR]

As energy commodity prices have sold off in recent months, so too have the E&P stocks that pull those resources out of the ground. And Ultra Petroleum (UPL) has been no exception. The good news is that you don’t need to be an expert technical trader to figure out why this stock looks toxic here — the setup in shares of Ultra Petroleum is about as simple as they get.

UPL is bouncing its way lower in a textbook downtrending channel, a price setup that’s formed by a pair of parallel trendlines that have kept UPL range-bound since April. The price channel in UPL identifies the high-probability range for shares to stay within, and so, with shares pressing up against resistance for the eighth time since this price channel kicked off, it makes sense to be a seller on the next bounce lower.

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). stock report: Star Bulk Carriers Corp.(SBLK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When most investors think of potential competitive threats to drybulk shippers like Star Bulk Carriers Corp. (NASDAQ:SBLK) or Euroseas Ltd. (NASDAQ:ESEA), Double Crown Resources Inc (OTCMKTS:DDCC) doesn’t come to mind. Indeed, DDCC doesn’t come to mind for many investors at all, as for all intents and purposes the company it is today didn’t exist until a few months ago. Age, however, has nothing to do with how disruptive it could prove to be for the likes of Euroseas or Star Bulk Carriers. Its underlying idea is brilliant, and it’s only a matter of time before it catches on within the commodity-transportation community.

What if there was a way to remove all the risks and hassle of shipping things like pellets or beans or salt – normally delivered in drybulk vessels – but still utilize all the flexibility of intermodal containers (the big 20-foot boxes that fit on a truck and a train and on top of the deck of a boat)? There is. It’s called Translock2 (Translock Squared). It was designed by Double Crown Resources, and it’s going to revolutionize the way many material companies deliver their goods.

The nearby image is a Translock2 container. It should look familiar – it’s essentially an intermodal container in terms of size and shape, but mechanically is a delivery and dispensing platform for drybulk goods. The design allows commodities like sand or livestock feed to be moved with all the flexibility of intermodal transportation, but without any of the headache of aggregating and splitting up those goods to get them properly shipped to their final destination. With Translock2, drybulk purchases are packaged up by the seller at the supply source, and then delivered — just as ordered — all the way to the buyer’s site in the container. No material is lost en route, and no distributor or middleman needs to bother splitting up one large order into smaller ones.

Its development is worth noting, as it explicitly circumvents the need for drybulk ves

StarBulk Carriers (SBLK) and Safe Bulkers (SB) have more than tripled during the past 12 months, while Golden Ocean Group (GOGL) has more than doubled. So it must be time for an upgrade right?

That’s exactly what Morgan Stanley did last night, when they upgraded StarBulk Carriers, Safe Bulkers, and Golden Ocean Group to Overweight from Equal Weight, while lifting arguing that the “recovery is still not priced in.” They explain:

These companies have young fleets, mostly larger vessels, low cost structures, high operational and financial leverage to repricing in the dry bulk segment, and ability to start paying dividends in YE2018. Dry bulk stocks have nearly doubled YoY, but are still cheap in historical terms, in our view. The group trades at the historical 100-110% EV/Fleet Value, discounting no further increases in vessel values that are still ~50% below the long-term historical averages, significantly lagging the recent move in charter rates. We still see significant upside as charter rates increase, vessel values normalize, and capital returns to the industry as the group’s overall market cap increases.

Shares of StarBulk Carriers have climbed 16% to $11.72 at 3:50 p.m. today, while Safe Bulkers has jumped 13% to $2.13, and Golden Ocean Group has gained 9.6% to $8.13.

Too bad I recommended buying Golar LNG (GLNG) and avoiding the dry-bulk shippers back in November.

That move has now pushed shares of SBLK within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if SBLK manages to take out its 52-week high at $11.53 and then once it clears some past resistance at $11.98 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SBLK as long as it’s trending above near-term support at $9.47 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 64,367 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SBLK will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $14 to $15.

Lam Research (LRCX) soared to the top of the S&P 500 today after beating earnings forecasts and raising its fourth-quarter guidance.

    Lam Researchgained 6.9% to $136.17 today, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2% to 2,338.17.

Credit Suisse analysts Farhan Ahmad and John Pitzer and argues that Lam Research’s “new trough is higher than [its] old peak.” They explain:

We expect that bears will continue to argue that CY17 is a “Peak” year; however we think that investors are missing that it now costs >2x more to get incremental bit growth than three years ago. It is noteworthy that despite ~$17bn of memory WFE in 2016 both NAND and DRAM markets went from oversupply to undersupply – implying that new trough for memory investments is even higher than old peak (2010 memory peak had WFE of $12.6bn). We view Semi Growth, rising capital intensity, and growing China CapEx as secular multiyear themes, which could continue to provide growth in coming years. In addition, in case of tax reform there could be potential to return >$50 per share to shareholders by 2020…Increase TP to $160 (from $143), based on 12x of CY18 EPS plus net cash adj for taxes.

Lam Research’s market capitalization rose to $22.2 billion today from $20.8 billion yesterday.

Wednesday was a mixed day for the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrials dropped by triple digits but other major benchmarks fared much better. Crude oil prices fell nearly $2 per barrel to $50.50, and that hurt energy companies, along with a poor earnings report from technology giant IBM. Yet the broader market held up better, and the Nasdaq Composite actually gained ground. In particular, some good news from a few individual companies helped hold the markets up, and CalAmp (NASDAQ:CAMP), Lithia Motors (NYSE:LAD), and Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

Shares of Eli Lilly (LLY) are down nearly 13% this morning after a late-stage Alzheimer’s drug trial failed to produce expected results.

Biogen(BIIB), down nearly 6% today, also is working on an Alzheimer’s treatment; Merck (MRK) shareswere down 1% in recent trading.

Lilly was testing the drug as a treatment for mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.Credit Suisse analysts were hopeful the drug trial would show “a statistically significant impact on cognition.”MarketWatch reports:

“Eli Lilly said it would not pursue approval for the drug to treat mild dementia due to Alzheimers disease and that it will ‘evaluate the impact of these results on the development plans for solanezumab and our other Alzheimers pipeline assets’ … More specifics about the solanezumab drug, expected the night of Dec. 9 during a meeting of the Clinical Trials on Alzheimers Disease (CTAD), could have repercussions for whats called the beta amyloid hypothesis in Alzheimers disease treatments, which target protein fragments that some believe are responsible for the disease …”

On Nov. 15, J.P. Morgan analysts Chris Schott, Aditi Singhania, Dana Flanders and Christopher Neyor noted that trial success had a low probability. But they kept their$95 price target on the stock, noting the drug pipeline offers other opportunities. Their target implies upside of more than 40% from a recent price near $66. They wrote:

“… On solanezumab … While the FDA recommends both cognitive and function endpoints for Alzheimers drug approvals, we expect the agency to review solanezumab on the totality of evidence, and we would not be surprised to see a cognitive benefit coupled with a trend in secondary functional endpoints be sufficient for approval … regardless of the solanezumab outcome, we see a diverse range of new product opportunities supporting LLY
