The global trade war deepened Thursday with China reiterating it will hit back if the latest tariff threats from Donald Trump materialize, while India followed the European Union in slapping retaliatory levies on U.S. goods.

China is "fully prepared" to respond to any new list of U.S. tariffs, according to a commerce ministry spokesman, who said the nation will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative measures. Companies hate to cut dividends. Knowing the backlash they’ll get from stockholders, many executives and board members consider it a desperate act of last resort. They will halt non-discretionary expenditures, reduce payroll and overhead, and even take on debt in order to maintain distributions.

And that’s exactly why dividend hikes send such a strong bullish signal. A company wouldn’t bump quarterly payouts to $0.60 per share from $0.50 unless it were fairly certain that incoming cash flows would be more than sufficient to cover the higher dividend, with room to spare. The last thing they want is to raise it today only to lower back down tomorrow. A dividend hike is a clear vote of confidence for future success.

That much becomes clear after taking a look at fuel cell stocks Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP). The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. Top 5 Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2018

When blue chips get too popular – like the five I’m going to show you today – these “safe stocks” can actually be dangerous to continue holding in your portfolio.

The problem with blue-chip stocks? Call it the “Curse of the Dow.” The Curse says a stock that joins the Dow Jones Industrial Average will essentially hit a wall, underperforming in the ensuing months compared to how it performed before ascension. It’s not perfect, but it’s close – since 1999, 15 of 16 stocks that have joined the Dow have averaged 1% gains over the next six months, but averaged 11% gains in the six months before inclusion.

Why? There are a few factors, but one of the most prevailing is that by the point a stock has joined the Dow, it’s typically nearing the end of its growth ramp and reaching the slower-growth “mature” part of the business cycle.

Top 5 Blue Chip Stocks To Own For 2018: Celanese Corporation(CE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Time To Favor Optionality: Most macro data are similar to, or better than, when the merger was announced. As a result, the same returns have been obtainable, with significantly less stress, simply through owning 3M (MMM) or a basket of chemical companies that approximate the Dow-DuPont portfolio. Relative to the chemical sector, performance has been average, leverage appears reasonable but near-term FCF less-than compelling partly due to new capacity ramping. With the merger likely to close in the near-term (90% chance, in our view), we believe Dow-DuPont will have an opportunity to show how scale creates optionality. The overhaul at Celanese (CE) over the past few years shows the way.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Monday began on a down note for the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrials fell back down below the 20,000 level. Major market benchmarks finished with losses of 0.6% to 0.8%, and some market commentators attributed the declines to nervousness about the Trump administration’s actions to clamp down on immigration. Others noted that the latest reading of U.S. economic growth showed a 1.9% rise in gross domestic product for the fourth quarter, finishing the year with an overall GDP increase of just 1.6%, down a full percentage point from 2015’s growth. Despite the overall sullen mood in the market, some stocks gained ground, and GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO), Movado Group (NYSE:MOV), and IPG Photonics (NASDAQ:IPGP) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

In trading on Friday, cyclical consumer goods & services shares fell 0.01 percent. Meanwhile, top losers in the sector included Griffin Industrial Realty Inc (NASDAQ: GRIF), down 5 percent, and Movado Group, Inc (NYSE: MOV) down 5 percent.

Wednesday was yet another record-setting day for the stock market, as the Dow climbed triple digits and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite followed the venerable average to unprecedented heights. Economic data showing rising inflation made it more likely that the Federal Reserve will look to boost interest rates at its next Federal Open Market Committee meeting next month, and the ripples throughout the bond market sent many investors to consider stocks instead. Yet despite the substantial rally, some stocks missed out on the move higher, and American International Group (NYSE:AIG), Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK), and Movado Group (NYSE:MOV) were among the worst performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so poorly.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Movado Group (MOV) has tumbled 7.2% to $21.90 after missing earnings forecasts and offering below-consensus guidance.

Alaska Air Group (ALK) has advanced 1.3% to $94.55 after getting upgraded to Buy from Hold at Stifel.

Every second of every day in the United States an older adult falls. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that some 2.8 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths, while the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that between 700,000 and a million people fall in the hospital each year (AHRQ).

But some hospitals and a company in the heart of the Silicon Valley are hoping to change all that. Hospital administrators say they are increasingly encouraged at how adding artificial intelligence (AI) has augmented their traditional falls prevention programs.

Qventus is an AI-based software platform that solves operational challenges across the hospital including emergency departments, perioperative areas, and patient safety.

best stocks to buy today: Pan American Silver Corp.(PAAS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Cramer]

PAN AMERICAN SILVER CORP has experienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. The company has reported a trend of declining earnings per share over the past two years. However, the consensus estimate suggests that this trend should reverse in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, PAN AMERICAN SILVER CORP reported poor results of -$3.62 versus -$2.98 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings (-$0.35 versus -$3.62).

  • [By Jim Cramer]

Net operating cash flow has decreased to $32.87 million or 14.64% when compared to the same quarter last year. Despite a decrease in cash flow PAN AMERICAN SILVER CORP is still fairing well by exceeding its industry average cash flow growth rate of -28.24%.

  • [By Jim Cramer]

Return on equity has greatly decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Metals & Mining industry and the overall market, PAN AMERICAN SILVER CORP’s return on equity significantly trails that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.

  • [By Jim Cramer]

Despite any intermediate fluctuations, we have only bad news to report on this stock’s performance over the last year: it has tumbled by 29.22%, worse than the S&P 500’s performance. Consistent with the plunge in the stock price, the company’s earnings per share are down 193.33% compared to the year-earlier quarter. Naturally, the overall market trend is bound to be a significant factor. However, in one sense, the stock’s sharp decline last year is a positive for future investors, making it cheaper (in proportion to its earnings over the past year) than most other stocks in its industry. But due to other concerns, we feel the stock is still not a good buy right now.

Saudi Aramco could be valued at $2 trillion, making the Saudi Aramco IPO worth a massive $100 billion. That will make it the biggest IPO ever once the company goes public.

But the media is overlooking one key aspect of the Aramco IPO and is instead only focusing on the deal’s size.

Even though Saudi Arabia is only selling a 5% stake in the company, it will still potentially raise $100 billion. That’s more than four times the size of the current record set by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) and its $25 billion 2014 IPO.
