Hot Growth Stocks To Own Right Now

I last wrote about magicJack (NASDAQ:CALL) on January 27th, 2016, describing how the business was a) highly free cash flow generative, b) supremely capitalized, c) pursuing several low-risk growth opportunities, and d) valued at insanely low multiples. Today, one year later, all four of the above remain true. And yet much has happened in the intervening 12 months.

$40M acquisition of UCaaS provider Broadsmart

Less than two months after my previous article, magicJack announced its acquisition of Broadsmart, a provider of Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), for $38M in cash and $2M in CALL stock. UCaaS is a fancy way of saying that Broadsmart sells cloud-based telephony services to medium-to-large enterprise customers with multiple (often hundreds or thousands) of office or brand locations. In 2015, Broadsmart did $13M in revenue and $4.6M in EBITDA (35% margin), implying a purchase price of 9x EBITDA. Broadsmart’s founders, Todd Correll and Tom Tharrington, will remain as CEO and President of Broadsmart, respectively.

A lot has changed since then, however. J.C. Penney badly underperformed its own comparable sales target in the second half of 2016, as comparable sales fell instead of hitting the 3-4% mark the company had projected. Its peers continued to struggle — Macy’s(NYSE:M),Kohl’s(NYSE:KSS), andNordstrom(NYSE:JWN) all reported declining comps in the fourth quarter, and Macy’s said last year it would close 100 stores.

Hot Growth Stocks For 2019

Canadian business investment is being weighed down for a fourth straight year by weakness in Alberta’s energy industry.

Spending plans for oil and gas capital projects this year are down 12 percent to C$33.2 billion ($26 billion) from 2017, according to a Statistics Canada survey published Wednesday in Ottawa. The spending total has declined in each of the last four years from a peak of C$76.1 billion. The province of Alberta was the biggest contributor to the decline.

Weakness in energy limited the gain in overall spending on non-residential construction and machinery and equipment to 0.8 percent for 2018, to C$238.6 billion. That’s a slowdown from the 2017 increase of 3 percent and still below the total of C$272.1 billion set in 2014 before a plunge in crude oil prices.

Business investment has been one of the weak spots in a broad Canadian economic expansion, with growth being led more by government and consumer spending. Bank of Canada policy makers have said a shift to an expansion led by business is important to create a durable recovery.

It reminds us to continue to add to our winners. It was a winner a year ago. It had a three for one stock split, something that I don’t personally care about. I don’t think we should spend a lot of time talking about stock splits. I realize some people think they’re exciting or are confused by them.

Hot Growth Stocks For 2019: Nordstrom Inc.(JWN)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Hudson’s Bay’s European operations and its off-price division are probably responsible for the majority of the company’s recent losses. Still, sales have been plummeting at Lord & Taylor in recent years, as the tired chain has lost market share to other retail formats, as well as stronger department stores like Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) and even Macy’s (NYSE:M). Lord & Taylor is almost certainly contributing to its parent company’s ongoing losses.

  • [By Chris Lange]

Nordstrom Inc.’s (NYSE: JWN) most recent quarterly release is anticipated late on Thursday. The consensus forecast is $0.44 in EPS on $3.46 billion in revenue. Shares ended the week at $48.80. The consensus target price is $51.19, and the 52-week range is $37.79 to $54.00.

  • [By JJ Kinahan]

Retail earnings take center stage the remainder of the week, but aside from that it’s a little hard right now to determine what sort of catalyst is out there that could give the market back some of the “giddy-up” it had last week. Unless the retail earnings really surpass expectations in a big way, it might be difficult to figure out what the next instigator to the upside might be. Thursday looks like a big day, with Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and J C Penney Company Inc. (NYSE: JCP) scheduled to report before the open and Nordstrom, Inc. (NYSE: JWN) after the close. One question moving into these reports is whether the recent strong retail sales data might have helped the retail sector beyond M.

Top 10 Growth Stocks To Invest In 2019

No bank is more globally interconnected than Citigroup. Image source: iStock/Thinkstock.

It was about a century ago that Citigroup (NYSE:C) decided to chart a separate course from the rest of the bank industry. It continued to build its domestic operations, but shifted much of its focus to creating a vast network of banking offices around the world.

That decision has defined Citigroup ever since. It also represent the biggest risk facing Citigroup today, as the clamor for heightened protectionism and trade wars is beginning to reach a fevered pitch.

A vast global network

Citigroup’s strategy of looking abroad for growth propelled the New York City-based bank in the postwar period to the top of the industry in terms of size. A mere decade ago, it was the biggest bank in America.

The downside to Citigroup’s strategy, however, was that ratcheted up its operational risk — or, more specifically, its so-called “country risk.” Citigroup’s investments in Cuba and other Latin American countries at various times in history nearly drove it out of business on multiple occasions. A steep drop in sugar and other commodity prices after World War I caused countries and companies throughout Latin America to default on their bank loans. Volatile energy prices in the 1970s and 80s triggered a similar wave of defaults. Citigroup nearly failed both times.

In the healthcare world, one of those has to be the impressive quarterly report from Intuitive Surgical(NASDAQ:ISRG). The company increased its revenue by 25%, and accelerated its sales of the da Vinci robotic surgical systems that made it famous. But it’s not just the expensive hardware that is allowing it to prosper — it’s that every machine needs a steady supply of the disposable instruments and accessories used during its procedures. The Fools consider the recent numbers, the outlook, and the investment thesis for Intuitive Surgical stock. But in the, say, anti-healthcare space, cigarette slingerPhilip Morris International(NYSE:PM) took a big hit as demand slackened in major foreign markets. Sales of its e-cig devices are also not growing the way management had hoped.

We have Macy's (NYSE: M), Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN), Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), and Home Depot (NYSE: HD) reporting this week.  While the earnings reports will give us the historical data, this week's retail sales data will give us some insight on how well the sector is doing overall in the beginning of Q2.

  • [By ]

Some reasons for my bearishness on retail stocks:

Higher Energy Prices. Oil prices have rallied dramatically and back to 2014 levels, rising from about $35 a barrel in early 2016 to around $67 Thursday. That’s bad news for U.S. retailers, as rising oil prices historically squeeze consumer disposable incomes. That’s one reason why I’ve been consistently raising my short exposure to retail and plan to continue doing so. Shaky Same-Store Sales Growth. Recent improvements to same-store sales at Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) , Urban Outfitters (URBN) , Dillard’s (DDS) , Gap Inc. (GPS) and Macy’s (M) come against downgraded expectations, and might not be sustainable anyway. No Deal for Nordstrom (JWN) . The Nordstrom family has apparently abandoned plans to take its namesake company private. I had expressed concerns that this would happen. Higher Interest Rates. A rise in the London Inter-Bank Offered Rate (LIBOR) has recently accelerated. That’s bad news for retailers, as many variable-rate consumer debts (particularly mortgages) key off of the LIBOR. This will likely put a damper on mortgage refinancings — something that many see as an important ingredient for personal-consumption expenditures.

Crude oil prices continue to remain in focus after Brent crude hit $80.00 per barrel. The benchmark crude touched $80.00, as markets are concerned about the impact renewed Iranian sanctions will have on global supply. French oil giant Total announced Wednesday that it was abandoning a gas project in Iran after failing to obtain a waiver from the Trump administration to do business in Iran. The sanctions are expected to decline global output at a time that OPEC is already working diligently to push oil prices higher by containing excessive global production.

BABA stock had slumped by 18% thanks to trade restrictions on Chinese companies.

After decades of rather consistent growth, Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP) seemed to hit the ceiling in 2016:

MMP EBITDA (TTM) data by YCharts.

Driving that decline is the company’s direct exposure to commodity prices, which were weak in 2016. That said, prices are on the mend, which, when combined with the slew of growth projects Magellan Midstream Partners has in the pipeline, positions the company for a stronger showing in 2017. In fact, it could be the company’s best year yet for adjusted EBITDA and distributable cash flow.

What went wrong in 2016

Magellan Midstream Partners entered 2016 expecting it to be a down year. After producing $1.172 billion in adjusted EBITDA and $942.9 million in distributable cash flow in 2015, the company’s initial 2016 guidance for adjusted EBITDA was $1.154 billion, while it saw distributable cash flow slipping to $900 million. However, the MLP steadily increased its guidance throughout the year thanks to stronger-than-expected performance. As a result, it now expects to produce $1.193 billion in adjusted EBITDA and $925 million of distributable cash flow. While that would push adjusted EBITDA to a new record, distributable cash flow would still fall short of 2015’s record level.
