Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Own Right Now

It was just over a year ago that I wrote about Kinder Morgan Inc. and its debt and what I thought the company needed to do (here, here and here).  The stock was below $17 at the time, it fell to a closing low of just above $12 in late January and is now back above $21 having paid 50 cents in dividends.

The credit markets have also rewarded the company.  I am loathe to present the Credit Default Swap market as the market’s reaction to a company’s debt as it is technical and can be very capital structure dependent, but in this case it captures all that the company did right – cutting the dividend and reining in some capital plans.

KMI CDS Since October 2015 (Source Bloomberg)

You can see here that the credit default swaps peaked at an annual cost of $500,000 per $10,000,000 of protection (a simplification of how the CDS market works, but  close enough for the purpose of illustrating the point).

Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Own Right Now: Reynolds American Inc(RAI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Leo Sun]

With interest rates set to rise this year, many dividend investors are likely worried that their stocks will slip as bond yields become more attractive. While some dividend stocks will inevitably decline, investors can still find some low-risk income plays that have high yields and cheap valuations. Let’s take a look at three such stocks — AT&T (NYSE:T), Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO), and Reynolds American (NYSE:RAI).

  • [By Rich Duprey, Demitrios Kalogeropoulos, and Brian Feroldi]

It remains true that the tobacco industry will continue coming under pressure from anti-smoking activists, politicians, and regulators who seek to stub out cigarettes further by raising taxes on smokes, but companies such as Altria and Reynolds American (NYSE:RAI) are largely able to offset their impact on profits by raising prices. The ability to command such pricing power without an overly large loss of customers obviously speaks to the addictive qualities of smoking but is also an otherwise enviable position to be in.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Just before 1pm today, shares of Reynolds American (RAI) took a sudden nosedive on reports that its merger with British American Tobacco (BTI) had “hit a snag” according to StreetInsider.com. Cowen’s Vivien Azer and team still think a deal gets done:

    Getty Images

Street Insider is reporting that BATS’ acquisition of RAI has “hit a snag,” and that “a potential transaction may be less likely near-term.” We view this source as less credible (vs. a WSJ or CNBC), in particular given the scant level of detail. While the delay in a consummated deal has extended longer than we thought, we still view the deal as likely (85% probability).

Shares of Reynolds American have dropped 1.3% to $55.47 at 2:26 p.m. today, while British American Tobacco has declined 0.2% to $112.71. Shares of Philip Morris International (PM), which could be interested in an acquisition of Altria Group (MO), have fallen 1% to$90.28 after getting cut toNeutral from Buy at BofA Merrill Lynch, while Altria has risen 0.5% to$67.94 after getting upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Merrill.

Top 10 Dividend Stocks For 2018

On February 16, 2017, the United States Appeals Court for the Sixth Circuit in Summa Holdings, Inc. v.. Commissioner of Internal Revenue held that using DISC and Roth IRA strategy for their Congressional-sanctioned purpose, tax avoidance, was permissible.  The Appeals Court reversed a previous Tax Court ruling (Summa Holdings Inc. v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo 2015-119) that disallowed a domestic international sales corporation (DISC) Roth IRA strategy on the grounds that it had no nontax business purpose.

The Summa case is important for taxpayers because it confirms that commissions paid to DISCs owned by IRAs, paid pursuant to the terms of Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and the subsequent dividends from the DISCs to the IRA, are legal and not subject to attack under the substance over form doctrine.

Summa Holdings is controlled and largely owned by the Benenson family, including two sons. The Cleveland-based company is the parent corporation of a group of companies that manufacture industrial products that are sometimes exported. To encourage exports for closely held United States companies like Summa that lack any meaningful foreign presence, Congress, in 1971, authorized the use of a DISC. The tax break is that the parent firm doesn’t owe corporate-level income tax on “commissions” paid to the DISC on its qualified exports. Properly structured, a DISC has no activities other than on paper and no activities not related to the export of qualifying goods.

Top 10 Dividend Stocks For 2018: Cummins Inc.(CMI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Making mining equipment has been a horrible business over the last few years. The industry has been hard-hit by the spending cutbacks at mine sites around the world. For example, BHP Billiton Limited trimmed its capital exploration expenditures by roughly 70% between fiscal 2013 and 2016. No wonder Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT), Komatsu Ltd. (NASDAQOTH:KMTUY), and Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) have been hurting. Only that looks like it’s starting to change, which means this trio could be at the top of a list of mining equipment companies to buy in 2017.

People were perplexed about the Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and Cummins Engine (CMI) and Caterpillar (CAT) quarters, but they turned out to be classic buying opportunities after years of being sell opportunities if the stocks had run. I can’t explain to you how amazing that is. Here are three stocks that have spent months and months in purgatory when they have missed or guided down or slashed forecasts. Ihor Dusaniwsky at S3 Partners writes:

RL short interest levels, already at historical highs today, should continue to grow if the recent trend continues, but having made almost 23% in 2016 and 14% in 2017, short sellers may be quick to cover their positions and lock in profits if RLs stock price turns against them.

Short interest in Ralph Lauren fell in 2016 as the stock price fella nd shorts covered positions, netting a return of 22.6%. So far this year, however, the short position as increased $226 million, or 38% to $815 million as of this morning, according to the S3 report.

  • [By Darren Williams] Although the entire cannabis space has quietly taken a hit of their own medicine in recent weeks and gone to sleep, don’t think for one second the entire space isn’t going to light up again soon. That’s just what they do, right? However, knowing who the pretenders are and knowing who the contenders are is really the challenge when it’s comes right down to it.
First, anyone who claims to be a grower or a seller of cannabis can’t for one second ever make it as a public company right now, or can even legally consider being a public company for that matter, so you can scratch any of those right off your list. At least here in the U.S. anyway, because Canada is already well ahead of the curve having legalized it for medicinal purposes already.
More importantly, full legalization of marijuana in Canada appears to be on track for July 2018, which will make Canada just the second nation in the world after Uruguay to completely legalize the cultivation, sale and possession of the drug for medical and recreational purposes.
Regardless, the best time to buy any stocks in a hot growth sector is when either everyone has forgotten about them, or when the overall market landscape has turned bearish, which has yet to happen. However, the former seems to be the case for the cannabis space, despite some very favorable state legislation last Fall.
For now, as long as you have a license issued by Health Canada, you’re good to go, so there are some stocks trading in Canada already who are well on their way to making some green for investors. Top 10 Value Stocks To Invest In 2018

By Oisin Breen, Research

In line with previous articles we’ve written, and paraphrasing Buffett, it’s always interesting to consider investing behind the things you know. This article, motivated by a curiosity into firms supporting the deep-sea cable infrastructure that drives the internet, focuses on technological infrastructure firm TE Connectivity (TEL) that does just that, and a whole lot more. TE is a components manufacturer operating in a range of industries. 2017 has been a good year for the firm, and as investors continue to seek both value and growth in the market, unheralded infrastructure stocks available cheaply, relative to earnings, may continue to see their share prices climb in 2018.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Invest In 2018: Halliburton Company(HAL)

Trump is particularly enthusiastic about shale oil & gas and clean coal, which is good news for stocks such as Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK), Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) and CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE: CNX).

Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) reported stronger-than-expected profit for its third quarter on Monday.

Halliburton posted quarterly adjusted earnings of $0.42 per share on revenue of $5.44 billion. However, analysts expected earnings of $0.37 per share on revenue of $5.35 billion.

How strong is the earnings recovery? Of the 18 stocks that reported this morning, 13 beat forecasts, including Halliburton (HAL), and Hasbro (HAS). BofA Merrill Lynch’s Savita Subramanian and team note that for the first time since 2012, analysts are raising their earnings forecasts as earnings season progresses:

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

2016 was an interesting year for Halliburton (NYSE:HAL). Not only did the oil-field services company work through one of the largest downturns in the history of oil and gas, but it also had to deal with the financial fallout from a major acquisition blowing up in its face. When it reported fourth-quarter and fiscal 2016 earnings this week, the company showed that it had taken a big blow, but was ready to move on to the next big thing in the oil and gas market. Let’s take a quick look at the company’s results for the year that was, and see what could be in store in the coming quarters.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Following a series of M&A announcements in the oilfield-services sector since the onset of the oil market downturn, French oil-field service company Technip and U.S. oilfield equipment company FMC Technologies (NYSE:FTI) hooked up in an all-stock deal valuing the combined company at $13 billion. Shareholders of each company will own 50% of the combined entity, to be named TechnipFMC, which implies a roughly $6.5 billion acquisition valuation for each entity. The transaction, which should close early next year, will “combine Technip’s innovative systems and solutions, state-of-the-art assets, engineering strengths, and project management capabilities with FMC Technologies’ leading technology, manufacturing, and service capabilities.” Further, it should save $400 million in annual costs by 2019. Moreover, it will enable the combined company to compete better against larger oil-field service rivals Baker Hughes (NYSE:BHI), Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), and Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB), which have all gained strength during the downturn either through M&A activities or cost savings initiatives.

Halliburton (HAL) has gotten beaten up this year…and even today’s earnings beat doesn’t capable of reversing its fortunes.

Halliburton reported a profit of 4 cents, beating forecasts for 3 cents, on sales of $4.28 billion, narrowly edging expectations for $4.27 billion. Halliburton’s shares were trading higher before the market opened, but have declined have declined 0.3% to $46.90 at 1:56 p.m. today.

Evercore ISI’s James West sees a “margin explosion” coming for Halliburton during the second half of the year, while comparing the oil-services giant to LeBron:

With the start of the year already regarded as a transition period, we view the companys decision to sacrifice near term margins in order to accelerate long-term profitability and revenue growth as a defensive, yet calculated, and preemptive maneuver. Execution does remain a risk but naysayers seem to utter similar indecencies about LeBron James each year as the playoffs arrive. You dont doubt the king, and HAL is the clear market leader when it comes to NAM completions, in our view. The change in HALs reporting format makes syncing HALs commentary with its financials more difficult, but NAM comprised 68% and 61% of C&P revenues in 2014 and 2015, respectively (71% and 21% of EBIT). As such, the broader segment should be a good proxy for the region. Abatement of cost inflation, or at least a deceleration as we progress beyond the first step-change in activity of the cycle should serve as an additional tailwind for margins. The most likely benefit will come from proppant costs as sand mines resume processing finer mesh grades following the winter hiatus. Additional frac capacity is being reactivated at leading edge prices, evidenced by the fact that incremental margins improved throughout the first quarter, and the company continues to repair legacy contracts and commitments. The improvement of the broader po

Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2018

The U.S. stock markets rally, punctuated by new records all the time, wont continue forever. But its strength and longevity are remarkable when economic growth is merely OK, as opposed to spectacular. Rising economies throughout much of the world and good corporate profit growth are factors. But as Raul Elizalde, president of Path Financial in Sarasota, Fla., points out, the shrinkage of available shares has an outsized influence:

When a stock pays a dividend rate higher than the interest at which the company can borrow money, it makes sense for that company to issue debt and buy back its own stock.

This is exactly what happened as interest rates fell to historic lows. We believe that the retirement of equities is a key factor in the stock market rally, making them look expensive when compared to traditional measures of value, but not when considering their shrinking supply.

Times are tough for Ralph Lauren (RL). Profit and sales are fallingat theiconic clothingcompany, and investors who bet on a turnaround havelost their shirts on the stock. Adding to its troubles,CEO StefanLarsson is departingfollowing a creative clash with the companys namesake and founder.

Pessimism, meanwhile, appears to be on the rise.

According to a report by the financial analytics company S3 Partners, short interest in Ralph Lauren has risen since the start of the year, hitting historical levels. And while that short position is expected to keep expanding, bearish sentiments could turn on a dime.

Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Watch For 2018: Amphenol Corporation(APH)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Canopy Growth Corporation (TSE: WEED), formerly Tweed Marijuana Inc., is a medical marijuana company based in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Aurora Cannabis Inc. There’s also Aphria Pharmaceutical Company (TSE: APH), which also is engaged in producing and selling medical marijuana through retail sales and wholesale channels.

We saw this pattern with 3M (MMM) , one of my favorite stocks, which got crushed, falling from $177 to $173 because of what the headline writers called a weak consumer-products division. Sure, you can pull a line and see an unexpected decline. But declines do not necessarily mean weakness, which, to me, connotes a failure to have the right product and flagging sales. If you go listen to the conference call, you discover that the weakness had to do with a particularly retailer’s troubles. Sure, you could argue, why do we trust this company? I come back and say, you trust them because CEO Inge Thulin has been money in the bank for years and there’s no reason not to trust him.

Who are the likely candidates for the next round of upgrades? Cramer said he’s betting that 3M (MMM) will be in the mix, along with Walmart (WMT) and especially Home Depot (HD) , which should have a strong spring planting season with good comparisons to last year. Investors might also see upgrades on Honeywell (HON) and Nike (NKE) , Cramer suggested.

Second, how will the Dow get to that big magic number? Well, the six biggest stock weightings in the DJIA are: Goldman Sachs (GS), 3M (MMM), International Business Machines (IBM), UnitedHealth Group (UNH), and Boeing (BA). What you will notice looking at a day like yesterday is that tech led the way sector wise. If the Dow is going to outperform, we need mega caps to outperform. We need those six stocks to outperform. So we need a day where financials and industrials outperform to get there. Given the trends in sector leadership, that is bound to happen…We are one Trump tweet talking about how yuuuuuuge Goldman Sachs is away from 20k.
