The world economy is a vast and amorphous entity that can be hard to read and even more difficult to predict. However, you can get something of a checkup on the global economy by taking a look at industrial giants like General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), Siemens (NASDAQOTH:SIEGY), Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN), Honeywell International Inc. (NYSE:HON), and ABB Ltd (NYSE:ABB). Here’s what recent results at these industrial giants are telling us about the global economy.

Although many stocks haven’t rallied in response to positive earnings numbers yet, one exception was American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) last week. Shares had a nice response to earnings, jumping more than 7 percent. One reason could be AXP’s decision to raise guidance. General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) also got a boost Friday when the company left guidance unchanged instead of lowering it, as some analysts had feared. Honeywell international Inc. (NYSE: HON) raised guidance and found some traction in the market Friday, too. As we noted earlier this month, many investors appear more interested in the future than in what companies accomplished last quarter, so positive guidance from any company might receive a hearty reception.

stock market screener

President Donald Trump walks off stage at the conclusion of a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, February 16, 2017. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)

Lots of folks want to see Donald Trump’s tax returns.  Conventional wisdom is that the returns cannot be disclosed unless he consents.  That conventional wisdom is based on the general rule contained in 26 U.S.C. §6103(a).  The general rule forbids IRS employees (and some folks who receive information from IRS employees) from disclosing “return information.”  That is a term of art that means not just tax returns but also just about anything in the IRS files.

Section 6103 is a really complex statute, mostly because of the exceptions to the general rule.  The exceptions are found in subsections (c) through (o).  These exceptions balance a taxpayer’s privacy with the needs of government officers and employees to do their jobs.  So the exceptions to the general rule can get quite gnarly.

stock market screener: Honeywell International Inc.(HON)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The exuberance seen in some stocks is of concern. Caterpillar (CAT) recently warned that earnings expectations are too high. When the stock stopped trading we expected a decline of 3 to 5%, yet the stock actually opened higher. This has probably happened in the past but we cannot readily recall a stock reacting positively to its own downgrade. Honeywell International (HON) also suggested investor expectations are excessive, but again – with little apparent damage to its price.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

After a year of stock price fluctuations, the net result is that HON’s price has not changed very much. Although its weak earnings growth may have played a role in this flat result, don’t lose sight of the fact that the performance of the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, was essentially similar. Turning our attention to the future direction of the stock, it goes without saying that even the best stocks can fall in an overall down market. However, in any other environment, this stock still has good upside potential despite the fact that it has already risen in the past year.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

Net operating cash flow has increased to $1,666.00 million or 35.11% when compared to the same quarter last year. The firm also exceeded the industry average cash flow growth rate of 21.56%.

The current debt-to-equity ratio, 0.60, is low and is below the industry average, implying that there has been successful management of debt levels. Although the company had a strong debt-to-equity ratio, its quick ratio of 0.89 is somewhat weak and could be cause for future problems.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

HON is our top pick and a core EE/MI holding. While fundamentals are not best-in-class, we see HON as the best Energy play within the group with overall profit growth continuing to stand out next year, driven by high business quality and ongoing execution around cost and margins. And with ’17 the "inflection" year for revenues and Elster accretion, coupled with plenty of balance sheet optionality, we believe the stock deserves to trade at a premium versus an average discount across a range of metrics, including an adjustment for pension.

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

General Electric (GE) , Exxon (XOM) and Honeywell (HON) are among those to have announced or re-announced agreements. The Wall Street Journal estimates Saudi Arabia and the U.S are expected to agree to business deals and potential investments worth $300 billion over the course of Trump’s visit. The White House reached a more than $100 billion arms deal with the Saudis ahead of the trip.

  • [By Laurie Kulikowski]

We rate HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL INC as a Buy with a ratings score of A+. This is based on the convergence of positive investment measures, which should help this stock outperform the majority of stocks that we rate. The company’s strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its growth in earnings per share, increase in net income, good cash flow from operations, solid stock price performance and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. We feel its strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows low profit margins.

Germany’s biggest industry is again facing tough questions about how it does business.

Still struggling to move on from the “dieselgate” scandal sparked by Volkswagen’s 2015 admission that it rigged engines to appear cleaner than they were, the country’s top car manufacturers now stand accused of operating a huge cartel since the 1990s.

News magazine Der Spiegel dropped the bombshell on Friday, citing a letter it said Volkswagen (VLKAY) had written to German antitrust officials last summer in which it admitted to possible anti-competitive behavior.

The article alleges that hundreds of executives from Volkswagen (VLKAY) (and its subsidiaries Audi and Porsche), Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler (DDAIF), and BMW (BMWYY) had participated in 60 secret industry working groups over decades.

The alleged aim? To suspend competition in everything from vehicle development and engines, to suppliers and diesel emissions systems.

European antitrust officials, who are responsible for ensuring that big business plays fair in the European Union, were quick to respond to the report.

According to a report at Bloomberg News, some of the companies sending representatives along include General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE), Honeywell International Inc. (NYSE: HON), Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), and Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM). One company that has said it is not participating in the trip is Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT).

Who are the likely candidates for the next round of upgrades? Cramer said he’s betting that 3M (MMM) will be in the mix, along with Walmart (WMT) and especially Home Depot (HD) , which should have a strong spring planting season with good comparisons to last year. Investors might also see upgrades on Honeywell (HON) and Nike (NKE) , Cramer suggested.

Shares of General Electric have dropped 3.8% so far this year, with everything from its accounting to weaker margins being blamed for its weakness. Barclays’ Scott Davis and team, however, spoke with a source they call the “smartest man in the room,” who just so happens to be “nibbling” on General Electric now. They explain why and offer his views on Honeywell International (HON), Emerson Electric (EMR), and ITT (ITT) as well:

The S&P 500 has been in one of the strongest bull markets in history since 2009. Yet surprisingly, in the past decade, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) has actually outperformed the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) by more than 15 percentage points (even including the SPYs dividends). The GLD is up nearly 120% since 2006.

That didnt come in a straight line, of course. That covers a major run-up all the way through 2011, the declines of the next five years and golds rebound in 2016.

More importantly to new money: Many of the reasons the GLD has outperformed the SPY in the past 10 years could hold true for the next 10 years as well. Heres a look at 10 reasons gold could prove to be a better 10-year investment than stocks.
