Best Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now

By Randy Rieland, Next Avenue Contributor

Richard Adler knows a few things about the uneasy relationship between older adults and technology.

It’s something that Adler, a distinguished research fellow at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, Calif., has been studying for more than 25 years. One thing, in particular, has struck him.

Credit: Shutterstock

“The truth is that a lot of older adults are technophobes,” he said. “They tend to be classically late adopters of almost any technology.” Even though they are the ones with the most to gain from embracing the latest technology, Adler said.

Hesitant About Artificial Intelligence

That wariness may especially be true when it comes to the digital innovation that seems destined to become the next game-changer — artificial intelligence or AI. The name alone conjures up notions of talking robots and other brainy devices. That can seem creepy to older adults, not to mention that the idea of being around thinking machines can make them anxious about losing privacy or perhaps even worse, constantly being reminded of their own slipping cognitive skills.

Best Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.(FCAU)

General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (NYSE:FCAU) are both large-cap auto/tires/trucks companies, but which is the better business? We will compare the two companies based on the strength of their earnings, institutional ownership, risk, dividends, valuation, profitability and analyst recommendations.

Bad news for investors: Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) said production of its bread-and-butter F-150 and Super Duty pickups will be halted due to a fire at a supplier. Ford investors aren’t alone in this pain as General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (NYSE:FCAU) also said some production would be disrupted. Not only do investors have to deal with plateauing sales in the North American market, but developments such as this or perhaps an unforeseen recall deter investors from owning automakers. But just how much could this cost Ford?

  • [By ]

Fiat Chrysler (FCAU)  is bar none the best positioned of the “U.S.” automakers right now, Tesla included. That’s because despite a correction early this year alongside the rest of the market, Fiat Chrysler’s long-term uptrend remains both intact and recently successfully tested.

Best Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: eBay Inc.(EBAY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

But PayPal faces growing competition from other payments and merchant services businesses like Square (NYSE:SQ), hardware makers integrating payments into their devices like Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Samsung (NASDAQOTH: SSNLF), and banks establishing their own peer-to-peer payments service. On top of all that, PayPal is in the process of losing its largest customer, eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY).

The apps on your smartphone can make all kinds of things easier — but they can be costly, too, if they’re encouraging you to spend money. That’s often the case with apps tied to retailers and marketplaces suchas eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), Etsy (Nasdaq: ETSY), Amazon.com, and letgo, OfferUp. If you’re someone who likes to spend time browsing on such sites — and to click the “Buy” button — you could save some significant dollars by deleting those apps. Making it harder to spend your money is an effective way to spend less.

As Average Age of American Cars Nears 12 Years, a Challenge and Opportunities for Manufacturers

The average age of American cars has risen almost relentlessly for well over a decade. The level reached 11.6 year in 2016 and is expected to grow this year to over 12 years. That fact is a double-edged sword for car makers. Cars are better built and last longer. On the other hand, a 12-year-old car is considered old by many people, and they may be in the market for a replacement.

The fastest growing segment of the “old car” inventory is vehicles that are over 16 years old, according to IHS Markit. The number of these cars is expected to grow 30% from last year through 2021. That will put the number of units in this category at 81 million, against a U.S. driving population of 220 million. A silver lining in this trend is that many households have more than one car.

U.S. new car sales are expected to be just over 17 million this year, very close to a record. The number is expected to dip slightly next year, but incentives and the economy could affect that modestly. One thing is for certain. As new car sales stay flat, major manufacturers have to jockey for market share to keep sales, and likely profits, rising. This, in turn, can drive new buyer incentives.

The U.S. new car market can be broken into three huge segments. The first is sedans and coupes, many of which are light and get low gas mileage. These have become unpopular as gasoline prices have stayed low. The next is crossovers and sport utility vehicles, a market that has done well, again due to some extent on low gas prices. These vehicles tend to get fairly poor mileage ratings but the cost to operate them is also affected by low gas prices. The final segment is full-sized pickups. Many people do not know how large this segment is. It has only three vehicles. Among them, they will account for 2 million new sales this year. They are the leader, the Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) F-Series, followed by General Motor Co.’s (NYSE: GM) Chevy Silverado and the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) Ram. As a group, their sales will be up about 5% this year, against slightly lower sales for the entire industry.

One challenge the car industry has set for itself is very long finance periods for many cars and light trucks. Financing of 0% APR for 72 months is not unusual. It will be financially hard for people to sell these vehicles until they have paid off the entire amount owed. This creates an inventory of cars that will be six years old before they are sold or traded in.

Car companies are up against a market in which several tens of millions of people will not buy new cars soon. On the other hand, some people with aging cars will want to replace them, particularly when companies offer aggressive incentives. The balance between those two groups will drive some new car sales in the future. Unfortunately for the companies, no one knows how much.

technical analysis stocks

Wall Street could hardly be quieter, with large-cap stocks in their narrowest trading range since the 1960s as the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) continues in its longest consecutive streak below 11.

The national psyche is obsessed with the cavalcade of political news out of Washington; largely ignoring market-specific events like chatter of an OPEC-Russia supply freeze extension of a bit of softness in the housing market. Despite this, Big Tech stocks remain well bid with a narrow group of all-stars pushing the Nasdaq to a new high.

In the end, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost a fraction, the S&P 500 lost 0.1%, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.3% and the Russell 2000 gained 0.1%. Treasury bonds were stronger, the dollar weakened again, gold gained 0.5% and crude oil lost 0.4% as the bounce from the supply freeze extension news from earlier in the week faded on realization it will only steepen OPEC’s market share loss to U.S. shale producers.

technical analysis stocks: Trina Solar Limited(TSL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Elizabeth Balboa]

The firm has a Sell rating on First Solar, JA Solar Holdings and Trina Solar Limited (ADR) (NYSE: TSL). It maintains a NC rating on SunPower Corporation, Canadian Solar and JinkoSolar Holding.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is integrated solar-power products maker Trina Solar (TSL), which is set to release numbers on next Monday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Trina Solar to report revenue of $645.68 million on earnings of 15 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Trina Solar is extremely high at 24.5%. That means that out of the 76.94 million shares in the tradable float, 18.88 million shares are sold short by the bears. If the bulls get the earnings news they’re looking for, then shares of TSL could easily rip sharply higher post-earnings as the bears move to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, TSL is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $8.67 to $9.04 a share. Shares of TSL have now started to rebound off those support levels and it’s quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings above some key near-term overhead resistance levels.

If you’re bullish on TSL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.72 to $11.19 a share and then above its 50-day moving average of $11.17 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 5.17 million shares. If that breakout materializes post-earnings, then TSL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $12.49 to $14 a share, or even $14.50 to $15 a share.

I would avoid TSL or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then drops back below some near-term support levels at $10 a share to those double bottom support levels at $9.04 to $8

Shares of Carnival have dropped 4.2% to $43.74 at 2:39 p.m. today, while Royal Caribbean Cruise (RCL) has tumbled 5.6% to $66.15, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is off 4.3% at $38.63.

The stock market once again proved its resiliency on Wednesday, bouncing back from extensive declines early in the session to recover most of its losses. The Dow Jones Industrials actually managed to post yet another record close with a modest gain, and although other major market benchmarks suffered declines, they weren’t significant. Moreover, some favorable news from certain pockets of the market helped bolster investor confidence. Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL), Lantheus Holdings (NASDAQ:LNTH), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NASDAQ:NCLH) were among the top performers on the day. Below, we’ll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH) was up nearly 7% on Wednesday afternoon, following its fourth-quarter earnings report.

Norwegian said that it earned 56 cents a share, a penny ahead of analysts’ expectations. Revenue rose 8.5% to $1.13 billion, also squeaking past the $1.11 billion consensus estimate.

For the full year, Norwegian said it expects to earn between $3.75 and $3.85 a share, with a midpoint a penny above the $3.79 average analyst estimate. It’s first-quarter EPS guidance of 36 cents also came in ahead of the 34-cent consensus.

Instinet analyst Harry Curtiswrites that after recent missteps, it was “vital” for Norwegian’s forecast to meet expectations but not seem too optimistic, a balancing act he believes the company achieved.

He reiterated a Buy rating and $52 price target on the stock:

NCLHs 2017 EPS outlook ($3.75 to $3.85) brackets our forecast ($3.75) and the Streets ($3.79). However, we believe there could be upside to that range, given the positive booking and pricing trends so far this year. We remain positive on the shares of NCLH, which we believe should continue to outperform through 2017.

Norwegian was recently up 6.8% to $51.49.
