Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019

As we know, the broad stock market indices have been resilient all year. And that strength, in large part, can be credited to a small group of stocks.

Among that group, the blue chip Internet stocks have led the way: Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Google and Netflix. Halfway through the year, those five stocks were up more than 40% on average. And those five stocks carry a lot of weight in the performance of the indexes.

And given the valuation of the index, you constantly hear how the market is overvalued or "fairly valued." It’s not true, for the reasons we’ve often discussed, related to historical low interest rates environments. And it’s certainly not true for the energy sector.

Take a look at energy performance year-to-date relative to the rest of the market:

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market surged higher on Monday, with the biggest gains coming for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which closed above the 25,000 level. Investors were generally upbeat about signs that suggested the potential for a more favorable resolution of trade disputes between the U.S. and China, and positive moves in other financial markets continued to contribute to the stock market’s success as well. Several individual companies in key industries saw major gains. Denbury Resources (NYSE:DNR), MB Financial (NASDAQ:MBFI), and World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE:WWE) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Williams Partners L.P.(WPZ)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe, Jason Hall, and Matthew DiLallo]

Matt DiLallo (Williams Companies): This natural gas pipeline giant has had a slow start in 2018. Through the first half of the year, cash flow at the company’s MLP Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) has only increased by about 2%, due mainly to recent asset sales. However, with a major expansion project coming on line, cash flow growth should accelerate in the second half of the year. That project and others in the pipeline have the company on track to grow cash flow 9% in 2018 and another 13% next year.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Williams Companies is in the midst of a major transition. It recently agreed to acquire the rest of its MLP, Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ), in a $10.4 billion deal. The pipeline giant is making this acquisition so that it can more easily finance the expansion projects Williams Partners has under development. The transaction would allow it to free up some cash flow and improve its credit metrics, giving it more financial flexibility.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

  • [By Stephan Byrd]

Barclays set a $46.00 price target on Williams Pipeline Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in a research note published on Saturday. The brokerage currently has a hold rating on the pipeline company’s stock.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Natural gas pipeline giant Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB) announced today that it agreed to acquire the rest of its master limited partnership (MLP) Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) that it didn’t already own in a $10.5 billion deal. Not to be outdone, Canadian energy infrastructure giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) made an offer to acquire its namesake MLP Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE:EEP), along with the rest of its publicly traded entities, including Spectra Energy Partners (NYSE:SEP). These transactions have big implications not only for investors in these entities but for those who own other pipeline companies, too.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The stock market gave up modest amounts of ground on Wednesday, as investors reacted negatively to bad news on the earnings front in some key areas of the market. Losses were generally limited, though, with major indexes falling between 0.1% and 0.4%. Nevertheless, some high-profile stocks suffered more dramatic declines. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), Aphria (NYSE:APHA), and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC) were among the worst performers. Here’s why they did so poorly.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The size of Devon’s buyback is worth noting given the impact that smaller plans have had on the shares of rivals in the past year. Last fall, for example, Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC) announced a $2.5 billion share repurchase program, which at the time could have retired 10% of its outstanding shares. Anadarko would go on to add $500 million to that plan earlier this year, which it expected to complete by the end of the second quarter. It’s been a needle-mover for the company’s stock, which has rocketed 63% since it made the initial announcement in September. For comparison’s sake, Devon’s stock is up about 27% over that time frame while crude has surged 39%.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Occidental Petroleum Corporation(OXY)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Occidental Petroleum Corp.’s (NYSE: OXY) short interest decreased to 8.56 million shares from the previous reading of 8.97 million. Shares recently traded at $75.24, in a 52-week range of $61.09 to $87.67.

  • [By ]

Take one of our own holdings over at High-Yield Investing, Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY). While grocery prices have increased by 35% since 2008, OXY’s quarterly dividend distributions have risen from $0.25 to $0.78 per share — an increase of 212%.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

A second factor that’s a must for any E&P company is a low oil price breakeven level, which is the oil price where the company can produce enough cash to drill the wells needed to maintain its current production rate as well as fund its dividend if it pays one. This number can vary wildly by company, and many don’t share it publicly. However, a good target is to find E&P companies with a breakeven level of less than $40 a barrel since that means an oil producer can survive at a fairly low oil price and thrive when it’s higher. Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) is a great example of an oil company with a low breakeven level since it recently achieved its goal to get this number to $40 a barrel. By dropping its breakeven down to $40, Occidental can now generate enough cash at $50 oil to pay its lucrative dividend and grow production at 5% to 8% annual pace, while generating significant excess above that price so that it can grow even faster and repurchase stock. Most oil producers highlight their oil breakeven level in the investor presentations posted to their website. If the company doesn’t highlight this number, it’s likely because it has a high breakeven level.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

That multi-billion-dollar project recently got a boost after Lotus Midstream agreed to participate. The private equity-backed company recently made waves after sealing a deal to buy Occidental Petroleum’s (NYSE:OXY) Centurion pipeline system, as well as its Southwest New Mexico oil-gathering system. The sale gave Occidental Petroleum a huge cash windfall that it plans on using to repurchase shares.

  • [By ]

Already, shale companies such as Encana (ECA) , Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) , among others, are reporting higher cash flows and earnings on higher oil prices. As a result, they are paying down debt, increasing dividends and engaging in buybacks. This is a dramatic improvement in shareholder yield for the group.

  • [By Logan Wallace]

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans boosted its holdings in Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) by 166.0% in the 1st quarter, according to its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The firm owned 110,995 shares of the oil and gas producer’s stock after purchasing an additional 69,261 shares during the quarter. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ holdings in Occidental Petroleum were worth $7,211,000 as of its most recent SEC filing.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: FMC Technologies, Inc.(FTI)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Recently, though, Baker Hughes and other large oil services providers have been acquiring equipment manufacturers in order to make all-in-one package offerings to producers. Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB) bought Cameron International, and Technip merged with FMC Corporation to form TechnipFMC (NYSE:FTI) — both in 2016 — to make for more competitive bids for subsea infrastructure projects. The combination of Baker Hughes and GE, though, was unprecedented, as General Electric’s equipment manufacturing covered an incredibly wide swath of products for all parts of the oil drilling process as well as equipment for logistics, transportation, and refining.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019

The S&P 500 Index took a slight breather this week as investors digested a mixed jobs report, tensions in Syria and minutes from the Federal Reserve that showed officials are open to cutting back the Fed’s balance sheet later this year, further reducing monetary stimulus. Despite some of the uncertainty, a handful of dividend stocks delivered clear messages with payout raises.

Six notable dividend stocks increased their payouts over the last week, including two consumer retailers, a cruise ship operator, a large beverage manufacturer and a major provider of midstream energy services.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: MPLX LP(MPLX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The energy sector has been good to dividend investors over the years as companies operating in the industry tend to generate lots of cash, which allows them to pay lucrative and growing dividends. While the sector offers income-seekers a variety of opportunities, three top options to consider are ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM), MPLX (NYSE:MPLX), and Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX). Not only do all three currently offer above-average payouts, but they have the financial strength and visible growth prospects to continue increasing their dividends in the coming years.

It was looking like, for the first time in a while, we were going to be able to look at MPLX’s (NYSE:MPLX) most recent earnings report without having to consider some big transaction down the road that would fundamentally change these numbers and render them useless. Then, just a couple days before earnings were released, MPLX’s parent company, Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC), announced a huge acquisition that could have a profound impact on MPLX down the road.

A momentous meeting in Singapore. A trio of top central bank meetings. Simmering trade tensions between the U.S. and foreign powers. Megamerger discussions.

All of these potentially market-moving occasions are jam-packed into this week, but I’m keeping an eye on what I’m calling my #1 tradeable event this week: the Consumer Price Index due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday.

This inflation reading could very well set the tone ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting, which it’s widely expected to result in an interest rate hike announcement Wednesday. Economists surveyed by FactSet are expecting a month-over-month change in core CPI of 0.2 percent, and year-over-year change of 2.2 percent.

Specifically, I’m watching the “core” CPI reading most closely because it excludes the often-volatile food and energy prices. In May, the CPI reading reflected the slowest month-over-month growth in five months. This aligned with more-dovish-than-expected rhetoric from the Fed, which has wanted to avoid an extreme divergence in policy from other central banks.

Top Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Oasis Petroleum Inc.(OAS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Oil prices are at levels we haven’t seen in years. U.S. crude topped $70 for the first since 2014, as U.S. President Donald Trump appeared increasingly likely to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and reinforce sanctions on Tehran. In addition, OPEC has announced plans to bolster prices and cap production. For oil investors, Money Morning Global Energy Strategist Dr. Kent Moors says it’s time to buckle up. According to Moors, revoking the Iran deal would cause “price chaos” around the globe. And that’s right as driving season starts in the United States. Here’s more on the coming chaos for oil. In deal news, Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) announced it will purchase Gramercy Property Trust (NYSE: GPT) for $7.6 billion in cash. Grammercy manages commercial real estate. While this may seem like a boring deal, Blackstone is buying a business that churns out cold hard cash for its investors. We want to keep this deal on your radar, because there are many other deals like this coming down the pipeline. We’re going to be discussing one of the best real estate opportunities available very soon – so keep an eye out for updates.

Hot Low Price Stocks To Invest In 2019

Citigroup’s Alastair Syme and team argue that the earnings from big oil companies like Chevron (CVX), Total (TOT) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) will be bad…real bad. But that won’t stop the stocks from outperforming. They explain why:

Bloomberg News

Negative headlines, positive performance: We expect the majority of Big Oil companies to post negative 1Q16 earnings, a brutal headline, but one that clearly reflects the impact of cyclical oil price lows this quarter. The outlook can improve. Our positive thesis on the Big Oil group reflects a belief that the market still only discounts modest oil recovery we think c. $40/bbl is imbedded in valuations and a view that the group can drive self-help gains to boost profitability even in a low price environment. Signs of this self-help should be evident in 1Q operating performance: we expect to see the delivery of top-line growth (taking market share versus broader industry) and a continued reduction in operating costs, building on substantial cost-cutting through 2015.
