Hot Medical Stocks To Watch For 2019

What happened

Shares of Dexcom(NASDAQ:DXCM), a medical device maker focused on diabetes, surged 23% as of 11 a.m. EDT on Thursday. The huge jump is attributable to the release of second-quarter results that smashed expectations and featured a huge boost to guidance.

So what

Here’s a review of the key figures from Dexcom’ssecond quarter:

Revenue jumped 42% to $242.5 million. For perspective, Wall Street was only expecting revenue of $204.9 million, so the company handily beat estimates. Non-GAAP net loss was $9.2 million, or $0.10 per share. That was also much better than the $0.18 loss that market watchers were expecting.

The better-than-expected results also allowed management to significantly boost its guidance for the year. The company now expects full-year revenue of about $925 million. That’s much higher than its prior range of$850 million to $860 million.

Markets are cheering a major development in efforts to fix the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China. According to Reuters, Chinese telecom giant ZTE has signed an agreement to get back into business with its American partners. The agreement will lift a ban by the U.S. Commerce Department that prevented China’s No. 2 telecommunications equipment from buying from U.S. suppliers. This is a major development, and one that signals progress among trade officials from both nations. There are now more job openings in the United States than available workers. This is the first time that the Department of Labor has documented this phenomenon. There are 6.7 million openings compared to the 6.4 million workers available to fill those positions. As a result, U.S. companies have been forced to increase compensation in order to attract talent. All of the positive economic development could come to a screeching halt should the U.S. experience the largest labor strike in a decade. Reports indicate that the Teamsters and the United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) are on a collision course that could result in a general strike. The union has announced that 260,000 UPS employees have authorized a strike should both sides fail to reach a labor deal by August 1. UPS is responsible for the transport of 6% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

Many people think of recreational vehicles as part of an iconic American pastime associated with the love of the open road. For Thor Industries (NYSE:THO), the RV manufacturer’s corporate home in Elkhart, Indiana, might seem about as far removed from international trade tensions as you could image. Yet even though the RV market has been extremely strong lately, Thor believes that what’s been going on between Washington and foreign trade partners could create headwinds that will eventually make their way to this company in America’s heartland.

1. Harvey energy havoc: Harvey has knocked more Gulf Coast refineries offline, sending gasoline futures to around $2 a gallon.

Thirteen oil refineries have been shut down or are in the process of closing, while several others are operating at reduced rates. Altogether, the storm has knocked out about a fifth of America’s refining capacity, according to S&P Global Platts.

The Colonial Pipeline, which carries huge amounts of gasoline and other fuel between Houston and the East Coast, is also shutting down after Harvey, which is now considered a tropical depression, forced the closure of refineries and some of the pipeline’s own facilities.

Negotiators are expected to give an update on the status of discussions.

Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) has hit a rough patch in recent years. While cash flow and its dividend have continued rising, shares have slumped about 20% since the start of 2018 and are down more than 40% from their peak in 2015. Because of that, Enbridge’s valuation has declined to a very inexpensive level, which when combined with a steady stream of dividend increases, has pushed its yield up to an eye-catching 6.7%. That high yield for a cheap price makes Enbridge look like a compelling stock to buy, especially considering all the growth it has coming down the pipeline.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Several high-yielding dividend stocks have taken it on the chin this year due to a sell-off in the stock market and rising interest rates. That one-two punch has hit pipeline stocks the hardest, with several top-notch companies tumbling by a double-digit percentage since the start of the year. Three that stand out as excellent options to consider buying now that they’re on sale are Magellan Midstream Partners (NYSE:MMP), Antero Midstream Partners (NYSE:AM), and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Last November, Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) outlined its three-year strategic and financial plan. One of the key components of the Canadian pipeline giant’s strategy was selling 3 billion Canadian dollars’ ($2.3 billion as of May 9, 2018) worth of non-core assets in 2018, which would give it some of the cash needed to finance its CA$22 billion ($17 billion) expansion plan. That would enable the company to reduce debt while still growing cash flow and the dividend at a 10% compound annual rate through 2020.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil prices have improved dramatically over the past year as OPEC’s move to drain off the supply glut proved more successful than envisioned. That rising tide has lifted most oil stocks. However, that doesn’t mean investors have missed the boat, since many oil stocks still have ample upside. Two top ones where that’s the case are Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Enbridge (NYSE:ENB).

The ultracapacitor maker Maxwell Technologies (MXWL) reported on 2017 results last month, and after digesting some of what was mentioned on the earnings call and taking a look at trends, an updated view is warranted, although I will plan to wait until later in the year to address valuation specifically. Ironically, as it turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks now a good time to check in on the name, for just as I was putting the finishing touches on this article, fellow Seeking Alpha contributor Stephen Simpson has also published his updated view, which I would recommend to anyone interested in Maxwell. For the uninitiated, an ultracapacitor is an energy storage solution that can supply relatively high amounts of power that is both dispersed and recharged fairly quickly, but thus far has not been developed to be able to store and supply energy as batteries do, in which the power is dispersed more slowly. A reasonable explanation of the basic idea of the technology can be found from this YouTube video.

Top 10 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Newfield Exploration Company(NFX)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The large cap E&Ps we cover raised ~ $6.5 billion of equity in 2015 and are likely to consider additional issuance in 2016. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) raised $1.3 billion on January 5th and Hess Corp. (HES) raised $1.5 billion of equity/equity-linked earlier this month. We think highly leveraged companies such as Devon Energy,Encana andRange Resources (RRC) and companies with a large deficit (before asset sales), such asAnadarko Petroleum and Devon Energy, are most likely to consider raising equity. Additionally, we believe companies such as WPX Energy (WPX), Southwestern Energy (SWN), Marathon Oil, Continental Resources (CLR),Noble Energy and Newfield Exploration (NFX) could issue equity while several levered companies may be unwilling or unable to access equity markets. We do not think Apache, Canadian Natural Resource, EOG Resources (EOG), Occidental Petroleum orPioneer Natural Resources are likely to issue equity this year.

Since independent oil and gas producer Carrizo Oil & Gas Inc. (NASDAQ: CRZO) reported fourth-quarter and full-year 2017 results Tuesday morning, shares have taken a beating. Just looking at earnings per share (EPS) and revenues, the punishment seems to be worse than the crime.

In addition, it sold several non-core acreage packages. Its largest transaction was the sale of some non-core Eagle Ford shale assets to Carrizo Oil & Gas (NASDAQ:CRZO) for $181 million. These deals boosted the company’s cash position up to $525 million, which along with another $300 million in available credit, provided Sanchez with a war chest to use in pursuit of an accretive acquisition.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Carrizo Oil & Gas Inc. (NASDAQ: CRZO) is rated a Buy with a lowered price target of $48. The EPS estimate for 2017 has been lowered from $1.65 to $1.41, and the 2018 estimate was raised from $3.90 to $4.02. Top 5 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Enbridge Inc(ENB)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jim Robertson]

On Friday, our Under the Radar Moversnewsletter suggested shorting small cap energy transportation and distribution stock Enbridge Inc (NYSE: ENB):

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Not to be outdone, rival Canadian oil pipeline giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) announced a transformational gas-focused deal of its own, agreeing to acquire U.S. pipeline company Spectra Energy (NYSE:SE) for $28 billion. That transaction will catapult Enbridge past TransCanada and create the largest energy infrastructure company in North America. Further, the deal will bolster Enbridge’s near-term capital project backlog to $20 billion, while enhancing its inventory of longer-term investment opportunities to $37 billion. This pipeline supports Enbridge’s view that it can increase its dividend by 10% to 12% annually through 2024.

Top 5 Energy Stocks To Buy Right Now: Matador Resources Company(MTDR)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Our peer group is up an average of 46% over the past 4 weeks in response to a 30% rebound in the 12-month strip NYMEX oil price. Some of the largest gainers include Hold and Sell rated stocks that we would not chase such asDenbury Resources (Sell, +138%), Halcon Resources (HK) (Sell, +147%), Jones Energy (JONE) (Hold, +166%), Rex Energy (REXX) (Sell, +60%), Sanchez Energy (SN) (Hold, +93%), Ultra Petroleum (UPL) (Sell, +61%), andWhiting Petroleum (Hold, +103%), which have outperformed the E&P Index (+32%) over the same time period. Balance sheets and/or well level returns remain challenged for these companies despite improved oil prices. While we believe oil markets should re-balance over the next 12 to 15 months, the recent recovery to $40 could reverse during 2Q16 as bloated inventories continue to rise, new volumes from Iran pressure an oversupplied market, and a highly anticipated decline in non-OPEC supply (especially in the U.S.), is not as steep as expected. The risk of an oil price retracement, which would significantly pressure the recent out-performers, outweighs the upside in these stocks, in our view. However, we are raising our target prices on Buy ratedAnadarko Petroleum ($54 from $48), Concho Resources (CXO) ($120 from $109), Matador Resources (MTDR) ($22 from $21),Noble Energy (NBL) ($40 from $34), SM Energy (SM) ($22 from $15), Rice Energy ($14 from $12), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) ($155 from $135),Continental Resources ($32 from $28), and Parsley Energy (PE) ($24 from $23). We believe our Buy-rated stocks are better positioned to weather challenging oil markets.

But despite positioning that would thrash other similar companies, Resolute fought through thanks to significant and efficient productivity in its Delaware Basin assets. Wangler believes the strengthening of previous concern areas will make the company a solid investment.

Matador Resources Co (NYSE: MTDR), $32 Price Target

Matador has grown its reserves throughout the commodity cycle, as well as its production and cash flow. Haas also likes the company’s history of identifying and acquiring acreage early and cheaply. Much of the analyst’s positive outlook is derived from Matador’s successful monetization of midstream assets and pattern of reinvestment.
