Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Watch Right Now

The waiting list for Tesla’s new Model 3 is growing fast.

Tesla (TSLA) said Wednesday it is now averaging more than 1,800 net reservations each day for its cheaper electric car, following an event last week to hand over keys to the first 30 Model 3 vehicles.

Tesla did not provide an updated figure for its total waiting list. At the event last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the reservation number was over 500,000. On a conference call with analysts Wednesday, he clarified the number was actually 455,000, including cancellations.

The strong demand is a mixed blessing for Tesla as it grapples with scaling up production to make good on deliveries for its first mass market car.

Tesla said it remains “on track” to hit its production goals. Tesla expects to produce 1,500 Model 3 vehicles in the upcoming third quarter, 5,000 vehicles produced per week by the end of this year and 10,000 per week by the end of 2018.

“What we have ahead of us, of course, is an incredibly difficult production ramp,” Musk said Wednesday. But Musk stressed there should be “zero” doubt of hitting the 10,000 mark next year.

    A lot has changed since then, however. J.C. Penney badly underperformed its own comparable sales target in the second half of 2016, as comparable sales fell instead of hitting the 3-4% mark the company had projected. Its peers continued to struggle — Macy’s(NYSE:M),Kohl’s(NYSE:KSS), andNordstrom(NYSE:JWN) all reported declining comps in the fourth quarter, and Macy’s said last year it would close 100 stores.

With all the talk about gentrification of city neighborhoods, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that U.S. suburban growth since 2010 has outpaced urban growth by 7.9% to 6.6%.

Partly that’s due to Americans who are being displaced by gentrification moving out to the suburbs, and partly that’s due to the fact that suburban homes are cheaper and services like schools are generally better.

Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Realtor.com, notes:

Most high-growth urban areas just don’t have enough land, so prices are higher and homeownership is typically lower. It’s tempting to live in a walkable urban neighborhood but the costs make it hard to afford, especially for large or growing families.

Realtor.com looked at where the number of households, home listings, list prices and demand for homes are growing the fastest for every ZIP code in the 50 largest metro areas. Here is the researchers’ list of the 10 fastest growing suburbs, along with the median price for a suburban home and the percentage difference with a home in the city.

    And while it may not always work out well to simply copy the moves other investors make, it can pay off to use their buying and selling moves as jumping-off points in your own research. We asked three real-world investors for their insight, and they wrote about two recent Buffett buys ofApple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) andUSG Corporation(NYSE:USG), and a recent Baker Brothers buy ofHeron Therapeutics Inc(NASDAQ:HRTX).

    As USG Corporation (NYSE:USG) drags its feet on an offer to sell the company for $42 per share, Berkshire intends to use its 30.8% ownership stake to motivate its top brass to make a deal. Berkshire told Bloomberg it intends to vote its shares against USG’s board members who are up for re-election at this year’s annual meeting, a clear message that Buffett is ready to cash in, even if USG’s management and board are not.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    Warren Buffett likes to hold his stock positions for the long run, and his experience with USG (NYSE:USG) has been typical of his other long-term investments. The Oracle of Omaha started buying shares of the manufacturer of Sheetrock drywall and other building materials back in 2000, accumulating a sizable stake that has ballooned to more than 30% of the company. USG ended up going through bankruptcy in order to get a handle on its asbestos liability claims, but thanks largely to Buffett’s involvement, the building materials company not only survived bankruptcy but also saw share prices soar briefly on hopes that USG would once again fully participate in the then-strong housing boom.

Best Cheap Stocks To Buy Right Now: Kohl’s Corporation(KSS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

    Most apparel-focused retailers have had a rough time over the past few years, bearing the brunt of declining U.S. mall traffic. However, No. 2 department store chain Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS) and off-price leader TJX Companies (NYSE:TJX) have been able to outperform most of their rivals, partially due to their focus on non-mall store locations.

  • [By ]

    Smith added that the Best Buy-Amazon alliance could be positive, likening it to Kohl’s Corp.’s (KSS) deal with Amazon last year, in which Kohl’s featured Amazon’s Echo and other smart-home products in its stores. It also allowed Amazon returns at certain locations.

  • [By ]

    The reluctance of millennials to spend their tax cuts could hurt the stock prices of many consumer companies. Shares of department stores such as Kohl’s (KSS) and an electronics retailer like Best Buy (BBY) have run up this year on expectations of consumers shopping till they drop this spring/summer. Considering there are more than 83 million millennials in the U.S., that’s a big pool of humans letting down some of the country’s biggest companies.

    It’s hard for any company to raise prices in the current non-inflationary environment. But it’s especially hard right now for operators of fast food restaurants, given the intense price competition in a very crowded marketplace. McDonald’s sales growth in recent quarters has been driven by the success of its Dollar Menu, so raising prices in that segment are a big deal for the company. In addition, pushback from franchisees who say they can’t afford to refurbish their stores, given higher charges from McDonald’s hits at one of McDonald’s key advantages in its market—it’s ability to refresh stores more frequently than competitors. A McDonald’s refresh at $600,000 on average, according to the company, costs substantially more than a remodel at Burger King (BKW) at $300,000 or Wendy’s (WEN) at $375,000 for the least expensive version. McDonald’s restaurants average $2.5 million in annual sales.

Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

As recently as last week, many high quality closed-end funds (CEFs) were being neglected thanks to the headline worry that higher rates would hurt them.

That nonsense stopped abruptly when Fed chair Janet Yellen basically slapped a “Buy” rating on the entire sector! Her dovish outlook was taken as a cue that CEF investors could breathe easy and, once again, collect their 8% yields in peace.

This cue was unnecessary. For starters, anyone who mistook Yellen’s Fed as hawkish was, well, mistaken. And has been for years.

Also, higher rates don’t really hurt CEFs.

The theory scares people because it sounds true. Closed-ends have the benefit of borrowing money at Libor to lever up their returns. Libor is tied closely to the Fed funds rate. So, the thinking goes, higher Fed rates will end the “cheap money” party that benefits CEFs.

    Walmart (WMT) was already on my “Best Short Ideas” list, and I added Kohl’s (KSS) and Target (TGT) to the roster on Thursday morning.

    Some reasons for my bearishness on retail stocks:

  • [By WWW.THESTREET.COM]

    * The market bent yesterday but today it stabilized. (A good showing, all things being considered–but in no way decisive going forward).
    * Gold +$5/oz.
    * Crude oil +$0.50 and the rise is taking up some energy stocks.
    * The Russell returned to the spotlight.
    * Life insurance–particularly Lincoln National (LNC) (on an upgrade). Hartford Financial Services (HIG) gets a small lift.
    * Retail returned from the depths. The standouts–L Brands (LB) , Kohl’s (KSS) , Bed Bath (BBBY) , Nordstrom (JWN) and Gap (GPS) .
    * Ag equipment–after an analyst upgrade yesterday.
    * Brokerages.
    * Homebuilders catch a bid.
    * Day one of the Masters Golf Tournament.

    International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) third quarter results illustrated that the company is finally getting close to revenue growth, which speaks volumes about the growth in its ‘strategic imperatives’ division. Nevertheless, growth in the segment (which now makes up 40% of revenues) has come at a cost and this is something Wall Street is noticing. IBM stock looks more and more like an all or nothing play on Watson.

Google (GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) doesn’t trade cheap and it probably never will. However, I do think it’s fairly valued and currently a good buy. My opinion is based on Google’s free cash flow, growth trajectory, and relative valuation to other technology stocks. I also believe that Google is only valued on its current business, which is mostly advertising. That leaves plenty of room for upside if Google successfully penetrates a new, large market. Given a cash balance of $100 billion, that’s surely a possibility for Google.

When looking at the three tables below, it’s pretty hard to find anything wrong with Google’s performance. It’s pretty much a state of perfection. Over the last three full fiscal years, Google has:
