Top 5 Medical Stocks To Invest In 2019: Apache Corporation(APA)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

Oil prices have continued rebounding this year, with the U.S. benchmark price WTI up another 7% to around $65 per barrel. That improving oil price has helped drive up most oil stocks. I say most because Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Apache (NYSE:APA), and Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) are flat to down so far this year because investors seem to have overlooked them entirely. Because of that, they trade for a dirt-cheap valuation versus their peers, making them intriguing options to consider.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA) which traded down about 4% at $42.73. The stocks 52-week range is $33.60 to $51.21. Volume was over 6 million compared to the daily average volume of 4.5 million.

While pipeline capacity constraints have hurt producers focused on the Permian, it has been a boon for midstream companies in the region, which have been able to quickly sign up shippers for proposed expansion projects. Private equity-backed EPIC Midstream was able to get major Permian producers Apache (NYSE:APA) and Noble Energy (NYSE:NBL) to sign up for a combined 175,000 barrels per day (BPD) on the company’s proposed EPIC Crude Oil Pipeline. EPIC currently plans to build a 440,000 BPD pipeline to ship crude out of the Permian. However, it could expand the line up to 675,00 BPD if there’s enough shipper demand. One of the reasons Noble was quick to sign on is that this line “provides long-term flow assurance for our rapidly growing Delaware Basin oil volumes,” according to the company. Apache, meanwhile, stated that this line “enhances our long-term operational flexibility and market optionality.” EPIC hopes to start construction on the pipeline later this year, which would put it in service by the second half of 2019. It’s one of the first projects by the private equity-backed start-up but likely won’t be its last given the infrastructure needs in the region.

Equity investors in China are taking a flyer on a strategy that hasn’t worked in years, speculating small caps will soar on the country’s sweeping plans to invigorate its fastest-growing firms.

China’s three most popular exchange-traded funds in 2018 all track smaller stocks, luring some $3 billion in net new assets, data compiled by Bloomberg show. While that’s a tiny slice of the nation’s $7.4 trillion equity market, it’s nearly 60 percent of all the cash that’s gone into stock funds trading in Shanghai or Shenzhen, according to the data.

Small caps have borne the brunt of China’s deleveraging campaign since the 2015 stock bubble burst on concern they would struggle to cope with soaring funding costs. Though the ChiNext is once again down for the year, it’s holding up better than a gauge tracking blue chips, a small win after it largely missed out on a two-year global bull market.

“China’s push to encourage domestic listings of unicorn companies has triggered interest in small caps,” said Patrick Dai, head of A-share research at Macquarie Commodities and Global Markets Group in Shanghai. “Investors are positioning for a potential rally in new-economy sectors because those listings would boost market sentiment.”

Ascendis Pharma (NASDAQ:ASND) caught my eye earlier this year when I was looking at quarterly ownership changes of biotech-focused hedge funds. Many funds were aggressively buying Ascendis over the last few quarters, and the stock is a high conviction name for at least a few of them. However, the stock was up more than 50% at that point, and I decided to put it aside as there were no material catalysts during most of 2017 and wait for some form of a consolidation or a pullback before doing more research. The stock was in consolidation mode for more than six months and broke out in late September following the failure of one of its main competitors in the growth hormone deficiency market. I was actually expecting to pick up shares cheaper after the success of Versartis phase 3 trial but the opposite happened. However, I think Ascendis is a better buy after a 20%+ rally, then it would be on a 15-20% pullback in the case Versartis somavaratan was successful as I believe the market cap gain does not fully reflect the elimination of a competing product which would have had a one-year head-start over Ascendis TransCon hGH.

This morning, President Trump suggested that the United States is considering strong military action in response to recent chemical attacks carried out on civilians by the Syrian government. The president promised to send “nice and new and ‘smart'” missiles to Syria and accused the Russian government of partnering with a “Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!” The president’s remarks are a significant departure from comments made last week, which suggested that the United States would be pulling out of Syria in the coming months. Trump’s threat of war over a recent chemical attack in Syria drove crude oil and gold prices higher. Geopolitical worries often offer a boost to commodity prices due to concerns about supply. Trump’s threat comes at a time that markets are already concerned about a significant military conflict in the Middle East between Saudi Arabia and Iran. WTI crude prices added 0.9% to hit $66.10 per barrel. Brent crude pushed to $71.10 per barrel. Gold price topped $1,350 per ounce and are poised for bigger gains. Skyworks Solutions gained 13% to $88.67, while the S&P 500 rose 0.3% to 2,271.31.

Oppenheimer’s Rick Schafer and team argue that Skyworks’ “growth [is] back on track.” They explain:

We expect Skyworks to deliver above-market growth driven by 1) continued smartphone content gains; 2) China share gains through strengthening baseband partnerships and demand for integrated (vs. discrete) RF solutions; 3) seasonal uptick at Samsung; and 4) continued double-digit RF complexity increases. With its “one-stop-shop” systems-level approach, we seeSkyworks uniquely positioned to benefit from rising RF content. We reiterate Outperform and raise PT to $105 from $100.

Skyworks Solutions’ market capitalization rose to $16.5 billion today from $14.6 billion yesterday.

More importantly, Apple could build around 120 million new iPhones this year as compared to 89 million units of the iPhone 7/7S in 2016 — according to Mizuho. This is great news for the other companies in Cupertino’s supply chain — such as Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ:SWKS), Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), and Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ:CY) — as they won’t have to wait until the second half of the year to bask in iPhone-driven glory.
