Hot Safest Stocks For 2019

The year 2018 has been volatile for the markets. Stocks rapidly climbed to record territory early in the year before finally posting a long-awaited correction. And the energy market has seen a dramatic rise in oil prices that’s helped to bolster prospects for oil and natural gas related companies. Yet for conservative investors, one popular investment that most see as being particularly safe has turned out to be a big loser, and that’s forcing many people — especially retirees — to reconsider how they invest more broadly.

Retirees and those approaching the end of their careers often are advised to reduce stock market exposure. Instead, many end up putting larger percentages of their savings into fixed-income investments like Treasury bonds. Although Treasuries are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, making them the safest dollar-denominated debt instruments on the planet, they are far from risk-free. As many retirees are learning the hard way in 2018, Treasury bonds can lose money, and current trends suggest that those tough times could continue.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Own For 2019

Australia, one of the world’s biggest users of rooftop solar panels, likely added the most new capacity on record last year as electricity users sought to ease escalating power bills.

A preliminary estimate by Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator of 1.05 gigawatts installed last year would be a record for the country, the government body said in an emailed statement Friday. While subsidies and generous feed-in tariffs helped boost growth earlier this decade, last year’s gains were driven by users seeking to sidestep a surge in the cost of electricity and a push by vendors into the commercial sector, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Hot Value Stocks To Invest In 2019

The U.S. utility-scale solar market is currently a big, but finite market for solar panel manufacturers. Given the rising cost of solar panels because of import tariffs there probably won’t be much expansion over the next three or four years.

It’s this finite market that First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) is trying to expand into to capture as much value as possible while competitors are hampered by solar panel import tariffs. But with the announcement of a new 1,200 megawatts (MW) solar panel manufacturing facility inLake Township, Ohio last week, First Solar may be expanding to the point where it will see diminishing returns on its own growth.

How First Solar hits diminishing returns

Solar tariffs of 30% on solar panel imports have given First Solar a big advantage in the U.S. solar market. Its thin-film panel construction wasn’t included in the scope of tariffs, so all of the company’s products can be sold in the U.S. tariff-free. The advantage should lead to strong pricing and margins in the utility-scale solar market where First Solar sells its product.

Looking at recent historical deals, we arrive at a $18-$23 potential deal range. We analyzed transactions that have been announced over the past four years and involved companies catering to a higher income customer. These deals include Southern Tide (acquired by Oxford Industries (OXM)), Joe’s Jeans (acquired by Sequential Brands Group (SQBG)), prAna (acquired by Columbia Sportswear (COLM)), The Jones Group (acquired by Sycamore Partners [private] and Juicy Couture (acquired by Authentic Brands Group [private]). The average EV/EBITDA multiple of these transactions are 12.9x (in line with KATE’s 5-year historical average of 12.1x) and implies a potential deal range of $22-$23. When taking the average of recent (F13-16) deals implies an ~10.5x EV/EBITDA multiple. When applying the ~10.5x multiples to KATE’s trailing EBITDA, we arrive at an $18- $19 potential share price.

As far as bad news goes, it’s the best bad news one could ever hope for. In September, the number of IT jobs in the United States “only” grew 0.17% from August’s total, reaching almost 5.2 million. That’s the word from TechServe Alliance anyway… an association of IT and engineering staffing companies. While not a huge number, it’s another step forward at a time when the rest of the nation is still losing ground.

There’s also some additional context needed, which makes this growth trend even more compelling — on a year-over-year basis, IT employment was up 3.1% compared to September-2015 levels. That’s growth of 156,900 IT workers.

TechServe Alliance added While the rate of growth in IT employment continues to decelerate, it is important to put this trend in context, commented Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. He further said While demand is not as robust in certain sectors and for some skill sets, there continues to be a chronic shortage for high demand IT skills. Further, despite the deceleration in the rate of growth, IT employment continued to outperform the overall job market on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis.

The Consumer Discret Sel Sect SPDR ETF (NYSE Arca: XLY) is often the go-to ETF to measure how retail and related consumer stocks are performing. This means that home builders are lumped into it, even though they aren’t the heaviest weighted stocks. But although the retail sector is bearish overall, retailers of home improvement goods are actually doing quite well. And as I mentioned, Home Depot (HD) is doing particularly well.
