Wynn Resorts (WYNN) soared nearly to the top of the S&P 500 today after Morgan Stanley argued that the casino stock had the potential to double.

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Wynn Resortsgained 4.8% to $104.30 today, while the S&P 500 finished little changed at2,373.47. At 2:45, Wynn was easily the top performing stock in the S&P 500, only to be surpassed by Citrix’s (CTXS) late day surge.

Morgan Stanley’s Thomas Allen and team explain how Wynn could double:

Our AlphaWise work on Google search data and separate analyses of market trends suggest the Street is too low on WYNN’s Macau market share gains. Our base case implies 20% upside; bull case, the stock could double.

Consensus forecasts WYNN to essentially not grow Macau market share over 4Q16, despite the Aug ’16 opening of Wynn Palace (which increased WYNN’s room capacity by 170%) and the general view that the benefit from the property has been disappointing so far. We see upside to WYNN’s market share supported by (1) analysis of Google search trends, (2) current market dynamics and WYNN actions, and (3) the performance of WYNNs first Macau property

Oil prices have continued rebounding this year, with the U.S. benchmark price WTI up another 7% to around $65 per barrel. That improving oil price has helped drive up most oil stocks. I say most because Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN), Apache (NYSE:APA), and Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) are flat to down so far this year because investors seem to have overlooked them entirely. Because of that, they trade for a dirt-cheap valuation versus their peers, making them intriguing options to consider.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The IEA’s forecast bodes well for oil stocks, especially those that have underperformed during the rally over the past year. Two that stand out are Newfield Exploration (NYSE:NFX) and Apache (NYSE:APA), since both have lost value even though oil has been red-hot. Because of that, they trade at dirt cheap valuations versus their peers. That underperformance doesn’t make sense given the growth these companies can deliver at much lower oil prices.

Since oil prices peaked in 2014, both Total and Shell have managed to generate positive total returns for investors who held through the downturn, in large part because of their diverse operations. Neither has come close to outperforming theS&P 500, but it could have been far worse; one only has to look at some of the biggest independent oil producers, includingApache Corporation(NYSE:APA) (down 53%),Anadarko Petroleum Corporation(NYSE:APC) (down 33%), andContinental Resources, Inc.(NYSE:CLR) (down 12.3%) to appreciate the benefit of Total’s and Shell’s more diversified operations.

Your financial life can be divided into two phases: accumulation and distribution. The accumulation phase is when you are earning money, building up your savings in preparation for retirement. This phase begins when you start earning an income and ends when you retire. The distribution phase comes after you retire and you start living on the savings you compiled during the accumulation phase.

The two phases are like climbing a mountain. On the way up – accumulation – your sole focus is reaching the top (the point of retirement). Once you’re standing on the peak, your focus shifts to safely reaching the bottom – the distribution phase.

Reaching the top of a mountain is worth celebrating, but if you don’t know how to get back down, you could be in big trouble.

Tuesday looked like it was going to be an exciting follow-up to Monday’s robust up-day, but early gains quickly deteriorated into losses, including a 0.07% dip for the S&P 500. And those losses look ready to accelerate as we head into Wednesday’s early action thanks primarily because of more tumult from the White House.

While the morning ramps up with news out of the earnings sector, a few stocks are consolidating big moves this morning, including BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) and Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY). The broader market itself could get interesting, too, as measured by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY).

Contract-chip manufacturing giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM) recently announced its earnings results, provided forward guidance for the current quarter, and provided a lot of insight on the ramp-up of its next-generation chip-manufacturing technology, called 10-nanometers (10nm for short).

This translates to a 9.4% stake in the beverage giant, and makes Coca-Cola Buffett’s third-largest stock investment.

Some money managers are indeed preparing for Armageddon, expecting a thin summer trading season to usher in the bear. But Cramer said that, ultimately, what happens in Washington has little impact on the earnings of stocks like Walmart (WMT) , Coca-Cola (KO) or Citigroup (C) . It also has no correlation to the 17.8% move in Nvidia (NVDA) , nor the 12.8% jump in Electronic Arts (EA) .

Coca-Cola Co.(NYSE: KO) was the exact same stake of 400 million shares. This has been a position thatalso has remained static, and Buffett has defended his stake here for years.

Beta Should Lead At The Start of A Rally: Best ideas in the first leg up: Marathon Oil, Devon Energy (DVN), Anadarko Petroleum (APC), and Continental Resources (CLR). If OPEC announces a cut, whether moderate or deep, we expect that in the initial move up, moderate value beta names, like Marathon Oil, Devon Energy, Anadarko Petroleum, andContinental Resources will lead. For a $5 increase in oil prices, we estimate 2017 cash flow per share would increase 12-18% for these stocks vs. the remainder of the group at 12%. Of these four, short interest is modest for all exceptContinental Resources at 25%, among the highest in our universe. Outperformance of these names should be driven by investors adding to long positions, not short covering.

There has also been a chorus of voices opposing the Paris agreement as well. Twenty-two Republican Senators last week signed a letter calling for the U.S. to withdraw. On the corporate front, Harold Hamm, the CEO of Continental Resources (CLR) and adviser to the Trump campaign, in a letter to Trump ahead of his inauguration reported by the New York Times called on the president to “cancel” the Paris treaty.

fixed income investments: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) is rated as a Hold with a new price target of $24. The EPS estimate has been cut from $0.60 to $0.47 for 2017, and the 2018 estimate has been increased from $0.70 to $1.19. Shares closed at $22.36 on Friday in a 52-week range of $19.77 to $25.74. The consensus 12-month price target is $28.72.

Shares of Warren Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ: WRES) were down 31 percent to $0.0656. Warren Resources filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Gogo Inc (NASDAQ: GOGO) was down, falling around 15 percent to $9.40 after the company announced it has reached an agreement with American Airlines Group Inc (NASDAQ: AAL) to “continue to provide service on a meaningful portion of the American fleet currently served by Gogo.” Investors heavily sold off the stock as the company’s announcement implies it lost some orders to its main competitor, ViaSat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT).
