Hot Energy Stocks For 2019

What’s bad news for U.S. oil drillers is great news for American petroleum refiners.

Crude oil production in the Permian Basin, arguably the most important energy-producing region on the planet, has outpaced pipeline capacity expansion. The bottleneck means the region — and now the nation’s central oil depot in Cushing, Oklahoma — is swimming in a glut of oil. Meanwhile, companies racing to export crude oil are pushing the country’s pipeline utilization rates closer to full capacity.

The combination of pipeline bottlenecks is now dragging down the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil to levels well below that of Brent crude. The difference between the two is called the Brent-WTI spread — and it’s now at levels last witnessed in 2015, and never before 2011. This single metric also explains why oil refinery stocks such as Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC), Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX), and Delek US Holdings (NYSE:DK) are up by as much as 51% this year.

Riding the wave of enthusiasm for alternative power, Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) has made great strides in bringing its hydrogen-power solutions to the materials handling equipment market. Thanks, in part, to deals with the world’s largest retailers like Walmart and Amazon, Plug Power has grown its top line at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% over the past 10 years. This is no small feat considering that Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP), which is arguably Plug Power’s greatest fuel-cell competitor, has only grown its top line by an average of 8% annually over the same period.

The companies generated just $235 million in revenue combined last year. While that would seem to indicate that the technology has a ways to go, a closer look shows both companies are on an upward trajectory as they position to exploit decarbonization trends. It also reveals two different growth strategies.

The S&P 500, as well as the Dow and the Nasdaq have all hit new record highs today, helped along by a sharp increase in oil prices. And joining the party are the small-cap Russell 2000 and the S&P Midcap 400.

It didnt take much to set those records. The S&P 500 climbed almost 13.6 points, or 0.6% in recent market action to trade at 2,195.53 after earlier rising as high as 2,197.53.

Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.4% today, while the Nasdaq gained 0.8% and the Russell 2000 added 0.3%. The S&P Midcap 400, meanwhile, climbed more than 0.5%.

As CNBC reported earlier:

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Transocean Inc.(RIG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

Quantitative Systematic Strategies LLC bought a new stake in Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG) during the 1st quarter, HoldingsChannel reports. The institutional investor bought 13,609 shares of the offshore drilling services provider’s stock, valued at approximately $135,000.

  • [By Jason Hall]

Frankly, today’s big drop shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone. The company told us many months agothat common equity investors would only retain 2% — at most — of the company when it completed its bankruptcy proceedings, yet investors continued to pay a price for its stock that, at one point, would have made Seadrill worth nearly as much as competitorsTransocean(NYSE:RIG),Diamond Offshore(NYSE:DO),andNoble Corporation(NYSE:NE)combined. But a relatively steady decline in the share price, combined with today’s big drop, seems to be finally putting Seadrill more in line with its peers.

  • [By John Bromels]

Unless it’s not. Which it may not be. There’s a big cloud of uncertainty hanging over the company, in part thanks to its status as a very small fish in a very big deepwater ocean that’s full of huge, hungry competitors likeTransocean(NYSE:RIG) andEnsco(NYSE:ESV). Questions also abound about its parent company,Seadrill(NYSE:SDRL).

  • [By Jason Hall, Tyler Crowe, and John Bromels]

According to three Motley Fool contributors, there are still ample opportunities to profit in the oil and gas segment as some left-behind subsectors start to catch up to the higher price trend. Three in particular that are well-positioned going forward areTransocean LTD(NYSE:RIG),National-Oilwell Varco, Inc.(NYSE:NOV), andDevon Energy Corp(NYSE:DVN).

  • [By Ethan Ryder]

D.B. Root & Company LLC acquired a new position in shares of Transocean (NYSE:RIG) during the first quarter, according to its most recent disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The fund acquired 30,040 shares of the offshore drilling services provider’s stock, valued at approximately $297,000.

That’s the case for Sunoco (NYSE: SUN). After posting a net loss of $0.09 per share in 2017, the gas station owner is expected to swing to a hefty profit of $2.35 per share in 2018. But of the 14 analysts who follow the company, earnings estimates range as low as $1.22 and as high as $3.35 — so there is a high degree of uncertainty.

  • [By Joseph Griffin]

Sunoco (NYSE: SUN) and Macquarie Infrastructure (NYSE:MIC) are both mid-cap oils/energy companies, but which is the better investment? We will compare the two businesses based on the strength of their earnings, risk, profitability, dividends, analyst recommendations, valuation and institutional ownership.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

The only segment where earnings declined was the catch-all one labeled “all other,” which houses different investments such as its stake in Sunoco L.P. (NYSE:SUN) and PES, a refining joint venture. PES has struggled due to higher costs, and recently declared bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Energy Transfer’s earnings from Sunoco L.P. declined because that entity sold the bulk of its retail assets and then used that cash to repurchase a portion of Energy Transfer’s investment.

Best Energy Stocks To Watch For 2019: Noble Energy Inc.(NBL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While pipeline capacity constraints have hurt producers focused on the Permian, it has been a boon for midstream companies in the region, which have been able to quickly sign up shippers for proposed expansion projects. Private equity-backed EPIC Midstream was able to get major Permian producers Apache (NYSE:APA) and Noble Energy (NYSE:NBL) to sign up for a combined 175,000 barrels per day (BPD) on the company’s proposed EPIC Crude Oil Pipeline. EPIC currently plans to build a 440,000 BPD pipeline to ship crude out of the Permian. However, it could expand the line up to 675,00 BPD if there’s enough shipper demand. One of the reasons Noble was quick to sign on is that this line “provides long-term flow assurance for our rapidly growing Delaware Basin oil volumes,” according to the company. Apache, meanwhile, stated that this line “enhances our long-term operational flexibility and market optionality.” EPIC hopes to start construction on the pipeline later this year, which would put it in service by the second half of 2019. It’s one of the first projects by the private equity-backed start-up but likely won’t be its last given the infrastructure needs in the region.

3/ Looking back on when I left college, there are some things I wish I had known.

4/ E.g. Intelligence takes many different forms. It is not one-dimensional. And not as important as I used to think.
