day trading penny stocks: Barnes & Noble, Inc.(BKS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Chris Lange]

Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) has been the markets punching bag over the past couple of years, and things dont seem to be changing anytime soon. The bookstore released its most recent quarterly results before the markets opened on Thursday, and this was met with investor trepidation.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

My colleague Dan Kline believes there’s also an opportunity for Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) to gain share in this space. Best known for books, it has also long been a retailer of specialty toys and games, and opening up its shelves to more mass-market toys could give it a wedge into the industry.Certainly this is a possibility, but like Walmart, Target, and other retailers, Barnes & Noble has no special knowledge or expertise in the space to allow it to make a grand entrance. It’s just not a market it knows well, which means that another type of retailer that could make a pronounced move in the space faces the same kinds of hurdles.

Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) traded down nearly 17% Friday and posted a new 52-week low of $5.40 after closing Thursday at $6.50. The 52-week high is $11.80. Volume was about 5.4 million, more than 4 times the daily average of around 1.3 million shares. The company revealed that same-store sales tumbled 6.4% in November and December.

Top 10 Value Stocks To Own For 2018

In our Q4 Outlook report released last week, we highlighted the fact that while valuations for equities were high, there is case to be made that relative to alternatives, equities were attractively valued. The TINA (There Is No Alternative) argument, as it’s called, suggests that even with equities trading at rich valuations, they are attractive compared to yields on fixed income securities which are at or near historic lows. The fact that more than 60% of the stocks in the S&P 500 pay a higher dividend yield than the 10-Year US Treasury illustrates one example of this idea.

The problem with the so-called TINA argument is that when interest rates rise as they have this week, the alternatives can quickly start to look a lot less attractive. A case in point is the Utilities sector. Over the last several days, as the long end of the curve has steepened, high-yielding stocks like Utilities have been under steady selling pressure, and as of yesterday’s close the sector finished in the red for the tenth straight trading day.

"What we are starting to see here is aggregation in the highly-fragmented hydroponic and grow supply industry. Most of these stores, including Keys Organic and Hydroponic Supply, are typically local or regional — This results in a very fragmented market."
"We saw this [aggregation] happen with grocery stores, the finance industry, auto dealerships — Bigger names come in. So, instead of Bob's Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) Dealership or Fred'sGeneral Motors Company (NYSE: GM) outlet, you'll get companies likeAutoNation, Inc. (NYSE: AN) come in, put them under a single brand, consolidate HR and other expenses to develop economies of scale and really help additional bottom line."
“Another way to look at it is, there's coffee shops all around the world, but there's also Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ: SBUX), which started locally […] and developed really organically. But, they could just buy the local coffee shop, redesign it to the Starbucks brand, put their name on it… Now they have the distribution network, the backing of Starbucks, Starbucks will take care of their HR, their payroll — It's a more synergistic approach and a really value-add if they can consolidate any level of scale.”

stock market crash

Wall Street didn’t flinch at the sudden exits of White House officials like Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer. Things may not stay as calm if Gary Cohn follows them out the door.

Cohn is President Trump’s top economic adviser, and considered to be one of the most important remaining players in the administration. Cohn has acted as a moderating force on Trump’s populist instincts on delicate issues like trade. Cohn is also quarterbacking the push to cut taxes along with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

Cohn is such a vital member of Team Trump that rumors over his resignation due to the president’s handling of the violence in Charlottesville spooked the market last week, briefly causing stocks to drop on Thursday morning. A White House official sought to reassure Wall Street, telling reporters that “nothing has changed,” and that reports of Cohn’s stepping down as director of the National Economic Council are “100% false.”

Investors are hoping that the former Goldman Sachs (GS) president will remain a source of stability and reason in the often-chaotic White House.

stock market crash: Discover Financial Services(DFS)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By JACK HOUGH]

Like CVS, Discover has trounced the broad market over the long term but sold off recently. It’s down more than 15% this year. Costs rose early in the year in part due to one-time expenses related to anti-money-laundering efforts and other regulatory concerns. Analysts predict an offsetting decline in expenses next year. Don’t confuse Discover with a company that’s primarily in the business of running a credit-card network, like Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA). It’s basically a credit-card lender, like Capital One Financial (COF), that runs its own network to gain a competitive advantage.

By saving on network fees, Discover can offer attractive card rewards, including a popular cash-back program. Any card lender can offer cash back, of course, but being too aggressive risks hurting margins. Discover has grown its portfolio of credit-card loans much faster than big banks have in recent years. And it has done so with industry-leading returns on capital. Rising growth could be on the way. Early this year, Discover went on a marketing spree. Last quarter, it reported its best card growth since 2007. Historically, new-card growth and loan growth have been closely correlated. In a November note to investors, Morgan Stanley analyst Cheryl Pate predicted accelerating loan growth within six months. Meanwhile, defaults remain low. Shares sell for less than 10 times projected earnings for the next four quarters, down from 12 times at the end of last year. They could rise 20% on a combination of earnings growth and a valuation rebound. The dividend yield is 2%.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We get the bull case.American Express is a blue-chip Dow component with an iconic global brand. It generates >30% returns on tangible, but it is trading well below its historical multiple and has underperformed post the election. Costco is now in the rearview mirror, and the string of negative surprises that have weighed on the stock are now poised to abate and position the company to start surprising positively. With Capital One Financial (COF), Discover Financial Services (DFS), and Synchrony Financial (SYF) all trading near their historical peaks, some have concluded thatAmerican Express is headed back to its historical high above $90. While this thought process may sound logical, we believe it only works in a world where generalists are steering the ship, and view it as highly susceptible to unraveling when negative revisions hit. American Express is not the business it once was, it doesnt have the same earnings power, and, in our view, it doesnt deserve to trade near its historical valuation.

stock market crash: Nam Tai Electronics Inc.(NTE)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Nam Tai Electronics (NTE), which is an electronics manufacturing and design services provider to a select group of the world’s leading OEMs of telecommunications and consumer electronic products. This stock has been destroyed by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 41%.

If you look at the chart for Nam Tai Electronics, you’ll notice that this stock has been uptrending for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $6.05 to its recent high of $8.38 a share. During that uptrend, shares of NTE have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of NTE within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NTE if it manages to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.38 to $8.79 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 647,483 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then NTE will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from April that started near $11.50 a share. If this stock gets into that gap with volume, then the upside is tremendous and we could easily see NTE hit $11 to $12 a share.

Traders can look to buy NTE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $7.42 a share, or below more key support at $7.22 a share. One can also buy NTE off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ: WYNN) shares suffered an incredible loss over the course of 2014 and well into 2015. The stock still is at about half of its peak value from back in 2014. However ithas made a solid run in 2017 (up 35%) so far, and more investors are coming around to the idea. Also many analysts have taken away their negative ratings over the past few months, but now Wynn has a new street-high analyst target from an independent research firm.

Argus Research has upgraded its rating on Wynn Resorts to Buy from Hold, with a price target of $135. Wynn shares closed at $116.74 on Tuesday, prior to the release of this report. Also worth noting is that shares have risen above the current Thomson Reuters consensus analyst target of $109.18. What should stand out here is that the highest sell-side research target price was $134, so Argus is now the highest official street-high analyst target.

Remember thatthe Thomson Reuters research universe is made up of sell-side research analysts rather than independent research and buy-side research.

Apart from eCommerce growth, another reason why some analysts are bullish on Amazon is because of itsgrowing offline presence. In anirony of sorts, Amazon.com, Inc which made its name by disrupting the brick-and-mortar retail market is planning on more physical presence. According to a New York Times article, Amazon is going to make a strong push in the bookstore, groceryand furniture segments. Recently, Amazon opened its first store in the same mall where the giant Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) had its bookstore before Amazon disrupted the publishing industry. For every store that Barnes and Noble will close this year, Amazon is likely to open a new one. Amazon is also opening more grocery shops and fulfillment centers, including one in India. But given the recent chaos in the brick-and-mortar retail space, why is Amazon.com Inc planning to enter this space?

stock market options: Galapagos NV(GLPG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Stephen Mack]

Galapagos NV (Nasdaq: GLPG) is our big winner so far, gaining 578.8% since Money Morning Executive Editor Bill Patalon shared his recommendation with Money Morning readers in April 2012. The S&P 500 has gained 75.4% in the same time. Bill has renewed his recommendation for the Belgian biotech several times over the years, saying in 2016 that it has “an established history of piling on gains.” With an average gain of 110% a year, it’s hard to argue with that.

  • [By David Zeiler]

Bill Patalon’s initial stock pick was Galapagos NV (Nasdaq ADR: GLPG), a Belgian biotech company.

Patalon was attracted to Galapagos’ strategy to target “orphan diseases,” afflictions that strike rarely and so often go ignored by the Big Pharma companies. He also liked that Galapagos had more than 50 drug discovery programs underway, and that it already had licensing agreements with several bigger players in the industry.
