The cost of providing health insurance to a companys employees grew nearly 7% last year, extending not only a long-standing streak of rising costs, but accelerating that trend. Indeed, between 2002 and 2016, the average amount of money a family of four spent on health care each year grew a whopping 180%.
Putting it bluntly: Regardless of whos paying the bill (and how), health care has become expensive.
Its not surprising, then, that corporations that are at least partially responsible for providing employees with health insurance are finally pushing back against an industry that has had little incentive to contain costs.
What is surprising is the collection of strange bedfellows that are uniting to stop unbridled health-care costs: Amazon.com (AMZN, $1,450.89), Warren Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B, $214.38) and mega-bank JPMorgan Chase (JPM, $115.67). The trio just announced a joint venture intended to check the rise in health costs while concurrently enhancing patient satisfaction and outcomes.

The stock market dealt with continued volatility on Tuesday, with investors uncertain how to react to a mix of earnings and geopolitical news. Throughout most of the day, market participants were trying to predict whether the Trump administration would move forward with its plans to withdraw the U.S. from the nuclear deal with Iran, and major benchmarks stayed in a relatively tight range with a downward bias during the morning and early afternoon. After the expected announcement, the Dow fell to a triple-digit loss late in the afternoon, but it recovered by the end of the session. Adding to the gloominess was bad news regarding some key individual stocks. DISH Network (NASDAQ:DISH), Gogo (NASDAQ:GOGO), and Hertz Global Holdings (NYSE:HTZ) were among the worst performers on the day. Here’s why they did so poorly.

Japanese trading company Itochu (OTCPK:ITOCY) has a tough act to follow – its own meaningful improvement over the past five years. The company was more willing than most of its Japanese trading peers to deemphasize commodity/resource businesses, and it moved fairly quickly here, building up non-resource businesses like its food, machinery, and finance operations. Those moves have led to better ROE and cash flow margin performance versus its peers, and Itochu shares have done well relative to peers like Mitsui (OTCPK:MITSY), Mitsubishi (OTCPK:MSBHY), Marubeni (OTCPK:MARUY), and Sumitomo (OTCPK:SSUMY) over that time.
