Thursday ended in the red for most major benchmarks on Wall Street, with the Dow trading down by triple digits at times before climbing back toward the close. After having bounced back sharply in recent days, stocks seemed to lose upward momentum, and interest rate fears returned to the market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond once again moved above the 2.9% mark, and shorter-term Treasurys had yields reach levels they haven’t seen in years. Yet even though the overall market was ready to take a break, some companies still enjoyed good news that lifted their shares. Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK), Snap-on (NYSE:SNA), and Rigel Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:RIGL) were among the best performers on the day. Here’s why they did so well.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Buy For 2019

As if finding bargain-priced stocks in a sky-high market werent difficult enough, investors who hunt for undervalued names face the threat of succumbing to value traps. These stocks masquerade as temporarily beaten-down shares of promising companies, but are, in fact, trading at depressed prices because of long-term problems with the business. The difference between true value plays and value traps becomes apparent in hindsight: The former eventually bounce back, while value traps continue to sag.

Picking the winners is often more art than science. Start by asking yourself two questions, advises John Linehan, who manages a number of value-oriented mutual funds at T. Rowe Price. First, do the companys problems seem fixable within a time frame you can live with? If the answer is yes, the stock deserves further consideration. Second, imagine that the company didnt exist, then ask yourself if people would care. If the answer is no, says Linehan, youre probably looking at a company without staying power.

Top 10 Undervalued Stocks To Buy For 2019: Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Perhaps the largest ETF dedicated to tracking French stocks should be getting more attention. In a year in which ETFs tracking the PIIGS economies are struggling, EWQ has been solid. The France ETF's 2.7 percent year-to-date gain is slightly ahead of the comparable Germany ETF and more than twice as good as the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK).

  • [By Tom Aspray, Senior Editor, MoneyShow.com]

The US stock market is still leading with the Spyder Trust (SPY) up 18.6%, while the European markets (VGK) are now up close to 10% for the year, as they have gotten a nice boost in the past three weeks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Here is a dichotomy. Global small-caps are performing admirably. The WisdomTree Europe SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: DFE) is an example of a Europe ETF that is defying some unfavorable trends. DFE is down 3.5 percent year-to-date. That sounds bad, but it is far better than what investors have been treated to with diversified, large-cap Europe ETFs. The Vanguard Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) and the iShares Europe ETF (NYSE: IEV) are down an average of 5.3 percent this year.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Still, there are instances of limited appetite for diversified Europe ETFs, particularly those with significant U.K. exposure. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) hasn't added (or lost) any capital since June 20. That ETF devotes 31.4 percent of its weight to U.K. stocks.

how to invest money

First Trust Cloud Computing ETF (NASDAQ:SKYY) is the first and only ETF to provide exposure to the fast-growing cloud computing industry. This market segment is growing by leaps and bounds and should do so for several years to come. For example, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services recently announced that its operating income increased from $580 million in the year-ago quarter to $926 million in the fourth quarter of 2016. Meanwhile, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced that Azure revenue surged 93% year-over-year.

According to research firm IDC:

Between now and 2020, worldwide spending on public cloud services is expected to soar to more than $195 billion. This is double the revenue the industry is expected to generate by the end of 2016.

The share price of SKYY should be in the clouds, right?

Well, no. Despite the great promise for cloud computing, the ETF has not really performed much better than the S&P 500.

Top Performing Stocks To Buy For 2018

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) has made an incredible run over the course of 2017, but is its momentum slowing as we get deeper in this holiday season?

Over the course of November, Amazon notched a gain of roughly 6.5%. While this is a solid gain for the month, and with the markets reaching higher highs, some investors want more bang for their buck. Granted this is outperforming the broad markets as well, but with all the hype around e-commerce going into this holiday season, theres more to be desired.

An alternative to Amazon would be Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), which saw its shares jump over 11% in November alone, although most of this was on the back of a strong earnings report. And what made this earnings report so special was that e-commerce sales exploded year over year.

Comparatively, Walmart is gaining ground now, but Amazon has been in the lead for some time. Walmart shares are up about 41% this year while Amazon shares are sitting on a 57% gain year to date.

Here are a few more notable items from the week.

First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) completed 18 MW of solar farms in Thailand with Prime Road Group. This is a module supply agreement from First Solar and is an example of the strategy it’s moving to in the long term. Look for more projects in which the company supplies equipment but a third party does construction and owns the project. Speaking of supply agreements, First Solar signed a 140 MW module supply agreement in Australia this week. The project will begin construction in April, so this will be a source of revenue for First Solar this year. Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) sold three utility-scale solar projects totaling 59.8 MW to Fengate Real Asset Investments this week for $195.3 million. This helps monetize assets on the balance sheet, reducing risk for the business in 2017.

That’s all for this week in solar. Earnings season in the industry starts next week, so we’ll be able to see how strategies and trends are playing out in what’s sure to be an exciting 2017.

Base rate customers will see their commissions fall from $9.99 to $6.95 per trade, matching TD Ameritrade. For those customers, E*Trade will have $4.95 per trade commissions, and options charges will fall by a third, to $0.50 per contract. CEO Karl Roessner said that although “an exceptional customer experience is far more important to traders and investors than price, with our new commission structure, we are able to reward our most active equity and derivative traders and investors.”

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

The biotechs and emerging pharma havebeen under pressure from politicians attacking drug prices. That doesn’t mean that there are not some big winners out there. Sometimes the biggest winners are companies most investors have never heard of. Even if you have been a biotech and emerging pharma investor for years, chances are high that you would have never heard of a small outfit called Apricus Biosciences Inc. (NASDAQ: APRI).
