Is it possible to begin with nothing and acquire wealth in America? Is it still possible today?   I've been studying that question for almost 20 years. And the answer is unequivocal: It is. It is still possible for ordinary, wage-earning Americans to become wealthy.   From my research, I have seen that there are basically three ways to get rich:

1.   Slowly (in 30 to 40 years),
2.   Quickly (overnight), or
3.   Surely (in seven years or less) – the way I recommend.

How to Get Rich Slowly   The Millionaire Next Door, a bestselling book from 1996, revealed that the typical American millionaires acquire their fortunes by scrimping and saving.

stock trading game: Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Here is a dichotomy. Global small-caps are performing admirably. The WisdomTree Europe SmallCap Dividend Fund (NYSE: DFE) is an example of a Europe ETF that is defying some unfavorable trends. DFE is down 3.5 percent year-to-date. That sounds bad, but it is far better than what investors have been treated to with diversified, large-cap Europe ETFs. The Vanguard Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) and the iShares Europe ETF (NYSE: IEV) are down an average of 5.3 percent this year.

Perhaps the largest ETF dedicated to tracking French stocks should be getting more attention. In a year in which ETFs tracking the PIIGS economies are struggling, EWQ has been solid. The France ETF's 2.7 percent year-to-date gain is slightly ahead of the comparable Germany ETF and more than twice as good as the Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK).

The US stock market is still leading with the Spyder Trust (SPY) up 18.6%, while the European markets (VGK) are now up close to 10% for the year, as they have gotten a nice boost in the past three weeks.

  • [By Todd Shriber, ETF Professor]

Still, there are instances of limited appetite for diversified Europe ETFs, particularly those with significant U.K. exposure. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (NYSE: VGK) hasn't added (or lost) any capital since June 20. That ETF devotes 31.4 percent of its weight to U.K. stocks.

stock trading game: iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

    The Bad

Bonds behaved poorly. The 10 year and long bond rose by between 3-4 basis points in yield. I bought a trading position in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond ETF (TLT) in front of a possible yearend pension rebalance. Big pharma stinks up the joint, again. Spec biotech is weakening again (Portola Pharmaceuticals PTLA, ACADIA Pharmaceuticals ACAD, etc.) Retail cant get out of its way. I am long JC Penney (JCP) and have trading positions in Kohl’s (KSS) and Macy’s (M) . (Nike (NKE) , Nordstrom (JWN) , Lowe’s (LOW) are downside features).

    The Ugly

  • [By Craig Jones]

Todd Gordon spoke on CNBC's Trading Nation about a bullish options strategy in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond (ETF) (NASDAQ: TLT). He thinks that the ETF could trade higher and he wants to use options to make a bullish bet.

  • [By Craig Jones]

On CNBC's Trading Nation, Andrew Keene of AlphaShark spoke about a bearish options strategy in iShares Barclays 20+ Yr Treas.Bond (ETF) (NASDAQ: TLT).

An ETF is a fund that tracks indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500. ETFs basically let you trade an entire sector instead of having to pick and choose specific stocks to trade within a sector. ETFs are also a great way for you to hedge against rising interest rates. When it comes to equities, a good ETF to monitor is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE Arca: DIA). For bonds, the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE Arca: TLT) is a good way to gauge the bullishness or bearishness of the overall bond market.

stock trading game: Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation(COG)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) is rated as a Hold with a new price target of $24. The EPS estimate has been cut from $0.60 to $0.47 for 2017, and the 2018 estimate has been increased from $0.70 to $1.19. Shares closed at $22.36 on Friday in a 52-week range of $19.77 to $25.74. The consensus 12-month price target is $28.72.

  • [By David Sterman]

Take Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG(link is external)) as an example. As I noted earlier this month(link is external), Cabot’s current drilling plans are expected to lead to a big spike in output over the next few years. The company’s executives decided to plow ahead with development plans, even as rivals were retrenching. The fact that natural gas prices have risen more than 10% in the past three weeks simply underscores the wisdom of that strategy, and could lead to rising sales and profit estimates.
