Zoe’s Kitchen’s (NYSE:ZOES) fourth-quarter earnings report didn’t contain a lot of good news for investors, with comparable-restaurant sales growth slowing to a crawl, and meager guidance of just 1% to 2% comps growth for 2017.The stock has since dropped more than 20%, now trading near its all-time lows.

However, management’s plans for 2017, as discussed during its conference call with analysts, include three areas of focus that could help as Zoe’s tries to turn things around.

ZOES data by YCharts

1. Menu and marketing innovation on tap

Though the traffic slowdowns the company experienced in the back half of 2016 aren’t unique to Zoe’s, it’s clear management needs to find ways to bring more customers in the door if it expects comps, which notched a mere 0.7% increase in the fourth quarter, to rebound.

One way the company plans to do that is by introducing new menu items that will be rolled out during the back half of 2017. To prepare its kitchens for this, during the first half of the year, Zoe’s will be simplifying some of its ingredient preparation to help keep labor costs for its new menu items in check. The company says these changes should allow it to build a “stronger pipeline of culinary innovation to fuel our future growth.”

stock penny: The Michaels Companies, Inc.(MIK)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By JPMorgan]

MIK’s results over the past year point to the company’s success in improving merchandising, marketing, and in-store execution plus the benefits of having a functioning e-commerce website. We believe part of the challenge for the bears is both a lack of appreciation for the category as well as missing the historical context of how leadership has evolved. Indeed, the difference in focus on "the front end" under CEO Chuck Rubin (who arrived in 2013) vs. a more process-oriented and margin-focused CEO prior to his arrival left a lot of impactful, low hanging fruit opportunities. Finally, while we acknowledge that longer term the sustainable comp is lower than the recent ~4% underlying trend, we point to the low volatility of sales, high cash generative nature of the business, barriers to entry (e.g., high SKU density, low inventory turns, lack of brands), and MIK’s market leadership as reasons why the multiple has the potential to expand over time (a la AZO). Balance sheet de-levering should also make the PE look increasingly cheap over time and transfer cash/value to equity holders.

42.37% is the gross profit margin for MICHAELS COS INC which we consider to be strong. Regardless of MIK’s high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 6.57% trails the industry average.

MICHAELS COS INC has improved earnings per share by 19.4% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($1.70 versus $1.04).

Given revised commodity deck forecasts (particularly for Steel and Gold) and improved Balance Sheet health (Steels, Precious and Industrials Metals) we are upgrading our ratings on several stocks in our coverage. We generally favor companies that have already initiated specific self-help, have low-cost assets and are less exposed to China supply and demand dynamics. In Steels, we have increased our rating from Hold to Buy on Nucor (NUE) and from Sell to Hold on US Steel. We have also upgraded Kinross Gold (KGC) to a Hold on valuation…On higher-than-peer valuations, we reiterate Sell-rated Coeur Mining (CDE), Franco-Nevada (FNV), Goldcorp (GG), Teck Resources (TCK) and highly leveraged AK Steel given preference to issue further equity if possible.
