Well before he took office in January, Donald Trumps unorthodox means of communicating had drawn attention. Since his entering the White House last January, that attention has focused especially upon the mans fondness for Twitter.

Some celebrate Mr. Trumps use of social media as au courant a modern political figure must use modern modes of outreach, runs the thought. Others, by contrast, have experienced Mr. Trumps late night and early morning tweets with some consternation, declaring them out of synch with the dignity of the office of the Presidency of the United States.

I am, I confess, often among those who are at least somewhat nonplussed by Mr. Trumps tweets some of the time.  I am unsure, however, whether it is the medium or the message that I have found jarring. Is it because Mr. Trump tweets at all that Im troubled, I wonder, or is it because of what he tweets? Or was Marshall McLuhan right in declaring that the medium is the message, such that the trouble heres both?
