investment bankers: Intersil Corporation(ISIL)

Advisors’ Opinion:

Big gainers on the day included Intersil Corp (NASDAQ: ISIL), which jumped 20 percent on news of a buyout, and Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN), which added 20 percent on a deal with Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) related to its cancer drug. Cotiviti Holdings Inc (NYSE: COTV) lost around 9 percent in the wake of a mid-day sell-off and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE: MRO) fell 7 percent in the wake of a management shakeup.

investment bankers: Ford Motor Company(F)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Daniel Miller]

In fairness, it’s difficult to compare Tesla’s valuation metrics with that of other automakers because the companies are wildly different and at different stages of growth. Still, the numbers are ridiculous. Tesla’s price-to-book and price-to-sales ratios check in at 10.4 and 6.2, respectively. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company’s (NYSE:F) price-to-book and price-to-sales are 1.5 and 0.3; General Motors’ (NYSE:GM)are a similar 1.2 and 0.3. Tesla’s market capitalization has skyrocketed into the stratosphere to eclipse Ford’s at $44 billion, and is currently matching General Motors’ near $51 billion — that’s insanity.

In fact, the company’s December numbers were very impressive, but I maintain that a lot of this growth has been generated as a result of a plethora of launches over the past few years. TheEdge crossover & theExpedition SUV drove growth in the SUV segment. F-series pickups (led by the recently launched Super Duty & the F-150) posted a record-breaking quarter which hasn’t been surpassedfor over a decade. Apart from Ford’s light truck growth, investors would have noticed the SARS (Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Selling Rate) came in at a robust 18.38 million in December. This means that 2016 sales on average rose to 17.54 million, which was another consecutive growth year for the industry. However, cyclical tops always end in euphoria which we can see in the sentiment chart below. Yes, the stock may look cheap with its present price to earnings ratio of 6.28, but meaningful risks remain in my opinion. (See Also:Is Ford Motor Company (F) Becoming A Trump Stock?)

At the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that took place in Las Vegas between January 5 to 8, Ford Motor Company(NYSE:F)announced a new collaboration with Amazon.com, Inc.(NSDQ:AMZN)which will enable consumers to use Alexa in Ford cars. Amazon Alexa has become very popular, and many people have received an Echo or Echo Dot this holiday as a gift. According to Ford, Alexa in its cars will provide access to shop, search, and control smart home features while driving. What’s more, the integration of Alexa in Ford cars will allow Ford vehicle owners, by using voice commands, to remotely start the car from home, lock or unlock doors. Also, while driving, Ford car owners will be able to order items on Amazon, listen to audio books, and transfer local destinations to the in-car navigation system.

Flexing the barbell strategy to balance Safe Havens with more cyclical exposures. In our view, industrials investors should be positioning their portfolio with a barbell strategy, with half of the exposure in Safe Havens like General Electric, Xylem (XYL), Danaher, Honeywell International, Roper Technologies (ROP), and AMETEK (AME), and the other half selectively in the cyclical names that are better positioned today, such as Pentair, HD Supply Holdings (HDS),Actuant (ATU), Atkore International Group (ATKR), Ingersoll-Rand, and Eaton (ETN). We still believe risk-reward is mostly balanced and that the macro will remain choppy into 2017, supporting a positioning in the defensive names. But if investor sentiment improves on not-worse news and earnings results, the more cyclical names could fare better.

investment bankers: Gener8 Maritime, Inc.(GNRT)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Shanthi Rexaline]

Frontline might be evaluating a new tanker company target such as Gener8 Maritime Inc (NYSE: GNRT), away from DHT Holdings Inc (NYSE: DHT), Lewis said. This was substantiated by the fact that Frontline sold 1.7 million shares of DHT in March, followed by 2.4 million shares in April and May. Though Frontline holds about 6.8 million shares of DHT, the Credit Suisse analyst said a deal is unlikely.
