Hot Oil Stocks To Invest In 2019

It’s a little too quiet in global markets considering the risks that are now roiling Italian assets — and that’s not likely to last, according to Morgan Stanley.

The political impasse in the third-largest euro zone economy has sent yields on Italian two-year government bonds up by a whopping 119.7 basis points this month — on course for the biggest monthly increase since May 2012, when Europe was enmeshed in the debt crisis that triggered existential questions about the single currency. While U.S. Treasury yields slipped some in Tuesday trading, broad measures of volatility remain a fraction of February highs.

"The lack of an obvious solution to this impasse is troubling, especially given the size of Italy’s economy and debt stock," Morgan Stanley analysts including Andrew Sheets wrote in a note dated May 28. "Yet given the worry it’s causing, it’s notable what hasn’t moved."

Others followed with similar return-focused approaches, including Encana (NYSE:ECA), which needs locations to achieve a 35% after-tax return at $50 oil to meet its premium hurdle rate.

There’s an interesting dichotomy here, however. Crestwood was looking to stay financially disciplined, but it also needed to invest to grow. Doing both at the same time is difficult, which is why it partnered up with Con Ed in the Marcellus region, Shell Midstream Partners LP (NYSE:SHLX) and First Reserve in the Delaware Basin, and Williams Partners (NYSE:WPZ) in the Powder River basin. These agreements allow Crestwood to keep expanding its business without having to foot the entire bill for the investments.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) are both large, international oil and natural gas producers. While they share many attributes, there are a couple of key differences. And those differences are what makes one appropriate for conservative investors and the other for more aggressive investors. Here’s what you need to know about these two energy stocks to decide which one is right for you.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) has been one of the best-performing oil stocks in the market recovery. One of the fuels driving its outperformance has been the company’s efforts to reshape its portfolio. Those actions not only brought in some cash to pay off debt and buy back stock but have sharpened its focus on its best assets.

  • [By Reuben Gregg Brewer]

Investors in search of dividend income will quickly notice that ExxonMobil Corporation’s (NYSE:XOM) 3.9% yield dwarfs the 1.8% dividend yield offered by ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP). That, however, isn’t the biggest reason dividend investors should prefer Exxon stock. Here’s what you need to know to understand why Exxon is a better dividend stock than ConocoPhillips.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While those issues led many oil companies to abandon Alaska over the years, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) was one of a handful that remained committed to the state’s oil potential. That commitment is starting to pay off as changes in the state’s tax code alongside some technological advancements have given the company the incentive and the tools to explore for new oil resources. Those exploration efforts are starting to get results, so much so that now ConocoPhillips is making plans to increase its wager on Alaska’s oil future.

On June 27, shares of Seadrill Ltd(NYSE:SDRL),Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO), andEnsco PLC(NYSE:ESV) traded up more than 10% at various points. And while they’ve cooled off a bit — up 9.9%, 10.3%, and 8.9%, respectively, at recent prices — they continue to march toward today’s close with big gains. And while not quite as much as the three aforementioned companies, shares ofTransocean LTD (NYSE:RIG)and Noble Corporation PLC(NYSE:NE) are showing big days as well, up 6.4% and 7.2% in late-afternoon trading.

  • [By Jason Hall]

Frankly, today’s big drop shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone. The company told us many months agothat common equity investors would only retain 2% — at most — of the company when it completed its bankruptcy proceedings, yet investors continued to pay a price for its stock that, at one point, would have made Seadrill worth nearly as much as competitorsTransocean(NYSE:RIG),Diamond Offshore(NYSE:DO),andNoble Corporation(NYSE:NE)combined. But a relatively steady decline in the share price, combined with today’s big drop, seems to be finally putting Seadrill more in line with its peers.
