China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL) is the world’s largest mobile company. It has 900 million subscribers, almost three times the U.S. population. The company is owned by the Chinese government. The Trump administration wants to block its ability to do business in America, another casualty of an effort to keep Chinese technology companies from tapping into U.S. intellectual property.

The administration petitioned the FCC in a filing:

After significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks to U.S. law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved. Therefore, the Executive Branch of the U.S. government, through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration pursuant to its statutory responsibility to coordinate the presentation of views of the Executive Branch to the FCC, recommends that the FCC deny China Mobiles Section 214 license request.

China Mobile’s petitions to do business in the United States date back to 2013.

Throughout its history, Starbucks has mostly had a company-owned model for its retail locations, a strategy that is at odds with a trend of activist investors pushing fast food, restaurant and coffee companies to franchise locations out to raise cash for stock buybacks and debt reduction. In recent years, activists have targeted Jamba Juice (JMBA) , Potbelly (PBPB) , Jack in the Box (JACK) , Wendys Co. (WEN) , McDonald’s (MCD) and elsewhere. In addition, Starbucks has a one-share, one-vote structure, which can make it vulnerable to an activist investor seeking to elect dissident director candidates as it pursued the strategy.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

U.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE:SLCA) has long been the standout company in the frack sand business. Its size and financial strength allowed it to weather the drop in oil prices better than its peers and positioned it well for the recent growth phase. This past quarter, the company expanded its universe by acquiring another mineral mining business, but it is taking some risk in doing this. Thankfully, demand for frack sand remains high, as evidenced by the company’s most recent earnings results.
